They support about 20 companies including Office 365 and Amazon.

My primary schools pay £60 per year for unlimited backup using Cloud Backup and Cloud Storage Management Solutions. CloudBerry Lab which backs up to any cloud service, we backup to Google Drive which has unlimited space for schools.

I'll try and find out some more info. I know they are going fully 1-2-1 next month using chromebooks. For video / music I would guess they use chrome apps - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/app/89-creative-tools?hl=en-US&utm_source=chrome-ntp-launcher. The reason they need any Windows machines is to run Sims.

Our local community college has been 100% fully Google since 2009 and have hundreds of thousands of docs in the cloud. They have 2 lines in from separate companies, only have 4 Windows machines in the entire place, and apparently not looked back. It has saved them a stack of money. So it does work.

I use Google Forms at all my primary schools. Even simpler than sheets but has themes so looks professional.

What appears to have fixed the issue is this local policy 'run all Administrators in admin approval mode'. Local Security Policy\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled After changing the above I can now edit and save the Sims.ini file.

Recently installed a new 2012r2 server and all was OK until today when I tried to run the sims update (Solus 2). Apparently the fix is simply to changing the location of where sims is pointing in the c:\windows\sims.ini file from a shared drive to the real location ie from S share to D\Sims...... When I tried to edit the Sims.ini file it says I do not have permission to change this file. I am logged on to this new data & sql server using my domain admin account. If I look at the old server security for the C drive it has domain/administrators if I try to add this or just my domain admin account to the new server I get a permission error for program files, program files (x86) and Windows folder, basically I am not able to add a domain admin account to these folders and can not edit the Sims.ini file which is in the Windows folder. This all seems very odd as it was my domain admin account that was used to install all the software on this server in the first place. Hope someone can help asap.

Sorry if this is double posted but cant find the one I created earlier. So MS do not support checkpoints for a vm with SQL running but I wondered if anyone was doing it anyway or shutting down the server first, which is also not supported by MS. Both host and vm's are Server 2012r2 and the SQL software is 2012 Express. Thanks

Very interesting. Sims is way ahead and used in 70%+ schools.

I just sent out some emails, not many, and I was lucky as a primary school just round the corner had been without a techie for about a month. It turns out that they never pay very much for IT support and are willing to go a while without anyone or take on someone without much experience. I did have lots of experience but not in a school environment so took the job with a thought of getting in other schools later. About 80% of the primary schools around me have the LA look after their IT systems and you will find it very hard to get in to these schools, not because the LA offer a better service, they definitely do not, but because its easy for the office staff / bursar to use them. From the bursars point of view money is all automatically transferred and they do not need to worry about CRB checks etc. You will find it much easier to get other schools if you can get into 1 school, as they will then recommend you to other schools.

I look after a 4 primary schools. I managed to get in to my first school by offering my services for almost nothing, 6 month after that I contacted a few schools in the area and took on a couple more and then dropped the school that was not paying me much. I did have 6 schools at one point but that was a bit much so keep it at 4.

I look after some primary schools and they all sign up to the LA for Sims. I also was interested to find out if we could save any money going direct as I thought Sims was expensive but it turned out we had a good deal going with our LA. Why not give Capita a call, you will find out how much it would cost going direct. I do agree it is very expensive

Odd. I have had a couple of users mention something like this to me recently but when they go to show me it works as expected.

Got them at all my schools and they still love them. They don't come with chargers anymore. They all wireless charge and never had to send one back.

School I am at today recently tested both 2 profile and tapestry and she said it was 50 /50 between them.

I could be wrong but didn't 2 profile get updated recently and have stuff added.

You could also take a look at home access plus (think it's called that) which you can find on this site. Basically gives you remote Web access to a server share and it's free.

You could use a zip software as most can also encrypt / password protect a file or folder and then share that over Google although I would probably not do this myself and would just get everyone an account with Google Apps for ed as it's free and comes with unlimited space. You could also use Office 365 but none of my schools use this so can not help with that.

Has anyone done this using Windows backup on the host? Even MS site says to only do system state backups, so I am still a little concerned that even running the backup could cause an issue. I will keep searching for info.

Does anyone have a list of firewall ports to allow SQL express 2012, Sims & FMS on our server. Our LA has always asked the primary schools to disable the server firewall but I am looking to buck that trend. I think SQL express might be an issue as it apparently uses a random port each time it connects. Thanks

Definitely the same as above when I worked for Canon UK. If you are getting paid to do some work then the company or school own it as they have paid you to do it.

I have been trying to find any information on the web that says it's OK to backup the full vm DC from the Host. Almost everything I find apart from the link in my OP is based on Server 2008r2 and not 2012r2. Can anyone find anything to support this method as I would really like to backup my DC along with my vm data server from the host.
