Currently in the process of getting a new server but a few questions have arisen. Background Info. current server is 2003 Fujitsu, all clients xp, New server HP M110 Looking to go to W7 clients but not in the imediate future due to cost implications Licences/software bought under a Select agreement with microsoft through the LA, if that helps. Original server licence bought this way. QuestionsCan we use the current server license with the new server? If we go to server 2008 will we have problems/issues running xp clients mapping, printers etc? If we get 2008 do we have to buy server client licences for all the existing PC's Any other advice welcome as I need to get this sorted soon.

If its to get movies off, just do as suggested or if its to use for stop motion animation dump the software and use Helium Frog software (free). You'll spend more time with the software trying to solve it than is worth it really.

Hijack away,superfletch, its still relevant. Probably alot on here would like to know more (in plain simple english). Reason I'm having to look at it is that on logon a few PC's complain that it cant find a file in the profile, some failed install I suspect. Recreated the default profile on the server (needed to do this anyway) and problem still existed so could only get rid of problem if I deleted all of the locally cashed profiles (mandatory ones) and hey presto no more messages when they log on with the network copy of the mandatory profile, so it just set me thinking (always dangerous for me doing that...and so it proved!)

Like how things are set up at the moment just dont know if there is any advantage to deleteing the profiles that get created on the workstation. Heard alot about delprof etc but dont know if its relevant/benefit to out situation?

Right I'll fess up, experimenting with delprof and profile delete scripts this after and managed to delete the administrator profile from the local PC! Not a major problem as read on here I can copy said profile from another PC or re-image if that fails (works without for the moment anyway!) Anyway reason I was looking at deleting profiles was to tidy things up but the question that sprung to mind was, would I gain anything by deleteing locally cached profiles of classes that have mandatory profiles or is removing profiles really only any benefit if they are roaming profiles?

Now after having a bit more investigation I find that the netbooks load the global desktop on certain users who have a different profile set, i.e. domain admin loads the global desktop and myself as a user loads the global desktop, however when logging on as any of the users who have the default pupil profile, no global desktop. Now this only happens on this batch of netbooks and not on the original four or the desktops! I did alter the default profile at Christmas, could that have made any difference and if so what do I need to do to correct it but cant understand why it works OK on the desktops but not on these batch of netbooks? Dont think its wireless connection as some logons as described load the desktop. Update: Just created a brand new profile and set class logon to it: logged on to netbook, no global desktop icons logged on to desktop pc, no global icons reset logon to old user profile logged on to netbook, no global desktop icons logged on to desktop pc, global icons now appear! Any ideas now very welcome as at a loss what to do?

No, just good old XP, not had a problem before like this, just hope this is a local problem as I set up 30 at one of my other schools but so far (reaches for nearest bit of wood) not had a problem like this with them. Must be some thing with the wireless config as thats all thats different. At least I got some focus to my investigations now rather than just stabbing in the dark!

Will give that a try tomorrow. Did have connection issues with this set and last time I worked on them set them to use windows wireless setup. Must have a closer look at that setup. They did when I checked them last time after changing the settings, bring up the desktop but as said they now refuse to do that vital part! Must be something to do with it as the original four have different wireless and worked fine and dandy. Have two other (insurance replacements after some tea leaf nicked two in the summer) that need adding to the domain so may try them first to see what happens as they are another model again and different wireless, bet it works on them! We have a global desktop set up for the kids for easy access to regular programs, however on the last batch of netbooks we have it has stopped appearing (i.e. only icons local to the netbook appear), drives are mapped, printers mapped etc just the desktop not loading the icons. Been working for the last few years just fine, no problems when adding new PC's etc before now. Now they did work when they were originally imaged, just in the last week or so it seems to have stopped on this batch? Desktops work fine and other original netbooks (which were the basis for the image) work fine. Tried taking it off domain, readding to domain, newsid, new name, removing profiles on netbook all to no avail and at a loss what to do or where to go now? As to what has changed, new Sophos was installed at Christmas and the latest batch have the new version on, apart from that nothing else has been changed unless WSUS has downloaded an update in the mean time. Any sensible suggestions on a postcard pleassseeeeee.

Thanks, have loaded VirtualBox and it has the snapshot feature (my bad explanation, called it locking) I was after. Must have been the workstation version I used many years ago.

Whats the difference? Already had VMware installed from a past project.

Installed Vmware player and created a virtual XP PC as I want to test out some software installs and maybe the new cameo software. Can I lock off the PC from saving any settings or installed programs when I shut it down so I still have my 'virgin' VIRTUAL xp pc when I start it up again? Sure I remember doing something like this many years ago? If not whats the best way to do it? Copy the virtual file to a backup and keep restoring it?

Not installed by msi but by a few kids installing it from the google website i think, before anyone says they should not have permission, they needed it for a couple of programs to run and mever had a problem before (its a primary). The kids are usually quite good. Its sophos av.

From my own experience it rather depends upon what state the schools ICT systems are in at the moment. If they are all up to date and up and running then I'd agree with witch but if they were anything like my 4 when I started then it would be full time till things are settled and running with just general jobs to preform and single problems/installs.

Can someone just give me their view on a proposed new server, 400 pupils (primary) runs DHCP, WSUS, Sophos (no SIMS or email server etc).
