Got a strange one, at one school had a teacher complain that when they shut down a certain PC it restarts by itself, now passed this off as them not selecting shutdown and not reading that it actually said Restart but.....in another school and came across the problem of PC's (Laptops in fact which have behaved themselves before) now have a tendancy to default to offer the Restart option rather than Shutdown. Only started happening recently, anyone else had this? Can be solved by just selecting the Shutdown option instead but knowing the kids they wont even read it before clicking OK.

Just an update, turns out it was just something that had been missed off in the change form the old server to the new server. It was looking at the application Data folder that was no longer available on the old server, changed the path, rebooted and all was fine.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but had a look for the folders but they dont exist and we have the same/similar problem. Used adm template to add default search providers, turned off search box but still the warning appears, given option to select a default (the one we have set) but selecting that gives a message that the setting is restricted (any idea which policy setting that is so we can chage it?). This is happening with all profiles, mandatory and roaming. Driving us insane here at the moment!

Sorry couldnt give exact figures as they are at home but done a similar thing, new server, CAL's etc. Paid about same as you for server and CAL's and I think price for VLK license for each W7/XP client was about £35 I think (about £1750 approx) (there is a cost we have to pay for the media as well which is about £11 for a cd/dvd of the required software to use to install- one off cost as its a vlk). Hope that helps unless I misunderstood the question...been up since 4am!

Thats my thoughts exactly, had the same issue, its a case of training, dont print high resolution images that are only printed on plain paper and are only 3"x4". We now dont have the problem as we changed to a MFD, nice and quick although still annoys me they still insist on taking high res phots and expecting there to be space on he server to store then!...but thats another story.

SMARTBoard Notebook 10 - Orient.exe Runtime error.
TechSupp replied to beebs's topic in Educational Software
Just installed the latest software for a 680 board and it auto downloaded the latest drivers 10.7 as a required update. Did an orient fine afterwards with no problems. Flashed the firmware on the board as well to the latest and that sorted out some problems with the board as well. Worked with a 500 series board as well (except no further firmware was available not surprisingly). -
After last years extended Florida trip (care of a certail volcano!) I can say that driving on the freeway at rush hour just after getting of the place with just enough time to get to the villa office, oh and driving an automatic for the first time in years scare the life out of me!.....then I got used to it :-) Took out own Sat nav to save on hire charge and can reccomend also the epass (saves alot of hassle). Be aware of hire companies wanting to upgrade your pre booked car. Dont pay any extra and if they say its not available stand your ground, surprising how they do become available very shortly! Agree with most of the advice above. After a while you get used to the driving style over there. The sat nav saved me a few times after I got caught in the dissapearing inside lane! It was quick to re route me back again.

Just have to justify the cost of the memory now :-(

I work covering primaries and yes, I woulc consider my job to be Network Manager/Technician but in Primary afraid it would (nearly always as I think there is/are some primary classed Network Managers on here) be classed as Technician. I've tried but after evaluation (Ha!) they will only go as far as saying its technicain mainly because I dont officially have to manage anyone or put my signature on the orders yet I do all the quotes, sort the orders, manage how the budgets spent (unofficially!), training, etc etc. As someone once said " I feel your pain!"

Thanks, just been looking at the VMWare website for it. Maybe a good idead for it then, bit of a test bed etc.

Yes might think about doing that, maybe build up a virtual W7 machine and get an image set up and test software with W7 for when we eventualy move to it. Still XP at moment but moving to server 2008. Is ESXi free do you know and easy to set up?

New week we are to have a new 2008 server installed, the old (P4) server is still to be kept running but only as a WSUS server and print server and a bit of file storage. Now I have a dual core DELL Optiplex 745 (1Gb ram) PC that I have been given and is spapare at the moment. Any suggestions what to do with it? Install the 2003 server on it, migrate all the printers etc on to it and retire the old server, Install some virtual PC software on it, imagethe new server to a VHD and use it as an emergency backup in case of a nightmare day I had last week when a server would not restart! Or any other suggestion. Just dont want to waste a reasonable spare PC as they dont come around here often!

Anyone heard of the governments 'Digital Region' scheme. Just had an email pushed under my nose about a local company offering leased line connections under this scheme instead of going with the LA when they take over supply of broadband from YHGfL in April. They claim the content? Any views as dont know enough about it to comment at the moment and dont know what we will be getting from the LA.

Just an update, I was barking up the wrong tree it seems. All it took was an upgrade to V10 and a firmware update and all is accurate! Looks like I'm on the update trail now with the rest of the boards :-(

Out of warranty :-( , just phoned Steljes and they think its age related (after the usual its the software version) and want £150 to come and check it out, if faulty would possibly replace (suppose cheaper than a new board!). Will try new software version first.

Got a Smartboard that will not orientate correctly to follow the pen mark. Will complete the orientation (20-80 points) correctly but trying to draw a line with a pen is near on one side but 3" away from the pen on the left. Trying to draw lines gives the image shown so I'm suspecting power interference in the wall. How can I go about insulating the board from any interference from the wall electrical cables? Its just hanging on its bracket at the moment, removed screws at bottom to eliminate those!

T6hink if I read it correct (and I'm not the worlds best programmer!) you only need to change the server name and share bit. The font bit stays the same as its just searching the shared resource folder for all files that end in .ttf and then looping through them, copying them if they match the .ttf format. Glad I looked as I was looking for something like this!

Just a quick reply now things have settled here a bit, my mandatory profiles are OK to log off now, but roaming profiles seem to be taking longer now that the new Sophos is installed. Same solution? Got the policy checked to not check remote files, but best check the policy has applied soon as I get chance, unless its something else.

Probably only loking at about 20 for teachers so most wont see the school after a while. If we get the wireless network then they can jump on that and he probably will want documents keeping on the VLE so access to files would not be a probl;em as its web based. If they are mac book air, then no CD\DVD drive which may come as a shock to some of them. We have kingston datatraveller encryped memory sticks now for data so dont think they will work (may be wrong) and transfer of data between mac and school PC was an issue some teachers mentioned. Got office 2003 on school PC's so would have to install compatibility pack or upgrade to 2010 (which would need licences for all PC's whch hes probably not planned for).
-
Thanks, as its a networked photocopier/printer bet its the 0.1%! Will have to check that. Just involves more setting up when I thought we had a stable working system. The mac air books are actually not for the kids but to replace the teacher laptops! Dont start me off..please!
-
Ha, my thoughts exactly..but need more arguments or things I/he needs to be aware of before going ahead with it (although he has already set up an account from what I've heard!)

Just found out the head is very interested in getting the teachers mac books for laptops and possibly introducing ipads for some ofthe kids. We have a vanilla 2003 server network running AD, DHCP etc with XP clients (workstations and netbooks). We dont have a wireless sytem at the moment but have been quoted for a Ruckus system. The question is now I know about this what implications are there for printing to network printers, file access to our server, anti virus (the school currently uses Sophos), we currently use office 2003 so would that prove a problem with file formats etc. File format diferences of files already created on a PC etc. Any others in Primary's run a mixed system, whats your view? As you may tell I'm a total newby on mac's and didnt particularily want to go down this route but mine is to do and obey and not to question why. Please dont let this end up in a why macs are good or not, thats not the question.

Sorry to drag this back up but wondering if there was a script to do this? Very similar problem and a simpler solution would be to just copy the shortcuts from a shared location each time they logon, so looking for a scripts t do the same...anyone? Would thnk I would need one to remove all shortcuts before copying the new ones at domain gpo level first?

I may have the BSOD butvdefinately the same update problem as on a machine with the problem, started in safe mode, uninstalled it, rebooted and right as rain. Fujitsu esprimo e3550 xp sp3. Not all have either downloaded it or have been affected. Only had half a dozen so far.
-
Glad I'm not alone!!! Posed earlier about BSOD's from updates. Did the same as you and declined all updates from 8/2/11. As I didnt have chance to identify the culrit from about 8 updates etc I just did a system restore from an earlier point. These were Fujitsu PC's and did the same/similar, booted up got almost to logging on screen then blue screened and rebooted. Came to the school at lunch and was faced with three down in the suite and a couple of more by the end of the afternoon. Bet I'm faced with a couple tomorrow as I noticed some were saying they would update at shut down (took option to not install and just shut down). Googling around shows 'we are not alone!"
