Thanks, think I've found a script sent in by another user of EduGeek so I'll try that. Just need to know the best way to delete the Application Directory off the profile.

Many thansk for the replys, have started looking at using a common ntuser.man for all the class logons, loaded from a central location just to make things easier to manage. How do you delete the local profiles? Do you do this via a script or via a GPO setting? If its a script, have you got an example? The same with the application data folder, as that is one of the largest parts of the profiles is that deleted by script or GPO setting?

Must admit when I started this job I said no, then made the mistake of sorting one out at their home, next thing its, oh something else is wrong can I go round? Learnt the error of my ways and said no. Once you do one its open season I've found, you end up doing everyones after hours that is. If they can bring it in and I have the OK from the head then thats a different matter as if I'm not doing that I'd only be fixing a school one.

Thats the next step for us as I see the kids getting more involved in creating a video production so they can report on an event in the school and share it with the others.

We (primary school) ended up going down the route of pre-recording the shows(they are only news broadcasts at the moment) and now post them on an internal website to be played back through media player embedded in the web page. I know its not true radio broadcasts but its a start and when will the kids listen to a broadcast show anyway, playtime they are out and lunch time they can't hear it. At least this way they can play the shgows back during class time for the kids to listen to. Software wise we (well OK just me at the moment) just use Audacity, does multitracking and mps creation and all for free :-) Don't know if your LEA subscribes to AudioNetwork but ours does and we get to use quite a range of music free under their license.

We tried the Longbow toners, and found the same thing, they are cheap and work like they are cheap. Wouldn't register as new ones on our Epson so have gone back to originals for all printers even though they are a bit more expensive.

Thanks I'll try that next week. If I can change the ownership and permissions easily then I'll do that as its not very often I need to create new users and want to get at the profile.

This is an area I've usually not had to go into apart from changing or adding the odd permission fpor access to a folder etc but I need to have access to some of the new users profile folders so I can change the ntuser file from dat to man. The system was originally set up so I could do this for the class profiles but not so I could change the staff profiles, which I've no need to do anyway. We have a couple of new classes created and I created the user accounts etc but find as administrator on the server I don't have permission to browse the new profile folders. Could anyone (please) tell me the idiots guide to resetting the ownership and permissions of these folders so I can change the files I need to. Screen shots if it gets a bit messy would be most welcome. I have to admit I was shown this very quickly when the system was first installed but as its not a regular task three years down the line I have to admit I've forgotten what was said :oops:

I had a similar one, caused problems when teacher was trying to demonstrate correct hand writting techniques! Eventually fixed by re-routing the USB cable away from any power sources. If its a new board (silver edge) there is a warning that they are very sensitive to EMF, even to what walls they are fixed to.

What do the ntuser.man files contain? I have one user with an ntuser.man file of 720K and another witha size of 2.5Mb. Can't see why the users should be so different. Could I just delete the problem large one and would it just create a new one at next log on?

Whats the benefit over roaming and is it easy to convert over to mandatory? Just been reading a bit more on the subject and realise that I am using Mandatory profiles i.e. after a profile change etc we lock it off by changing it from a dat to a man extension. Still have the problem of reducing the size of the profile though. In the profile it seem its mainly the Microsoft section of the profile that is bigger than the others who don't have problems.

Yes, I found the same information on BECTA. There is somewhere a list of minimum spec for a PC on BECTA (the link I used to have is now dead)and we used that to push through some upgrades\replacements. As for the ratio, I think when you fill the form out it meerley requires the PC to be able to work and doesnt say what spec it has to be!

Having had a look at why some year groups are complaining of a slow logon (roaming profiles), I now see that its the Application Data folder thats the problem. We have My Documents and Desktop etc redirected so thay are not in the profile and hence slow the logon times. Now looking on the net two options seem to be available to improve the logon time, redirection of the Application data or exclude the folder from the profile. Any suggestions as to which would be the best and less troublesome. If it was folder exclusion what would I have to use as the folder path %user% etc (examples would be most welcome Never done folder redirection so any hints tips would be helpfull.

Maybe we have just been unlucky.

Our desktop PCs were the VL350's and the sever a TM800. Support and servoce has not been bad so far...well apart from when the support on the other end of the phone last year when the server went down. Followed all the usual questions of what was happening and what happened after his instructions, then he asked me if I had any ideas what may be wrong!!!! 8O Thought they were supposed to tell me! Ah well they just decided to come out and change the supply and motherboard anyway to all solved eventually (untill this summer when the supply went up in flames!).

Like the real time weather graphs and the time lapse videos. Could watch those clouds rushing by all day. Excellent resource.

The best ones I've had so far are the Heavy Duty ones from the Tesco Vouchers for schools scheme catalogue. We sourced some more from RM http://www.rm.com/Primary/Products/Range.asp?cref=RA160032&position=2 and so far (thats 12 months) I've not had to put a single padded ear cover back on! However just had to repar a couple from the foundation stage where they had bitten/chewed through the cable! When will they ever make headphone cables that are covered in steel wire braid!!!!! Still they have proved better than any we have used before. Just watch out that they have an inline volume control. Does lead to the problem of "the headphones don't work!" , "ever tried turning the volume up" syndrome.

I know this has been discussed previously, but in general the network (roadming) profiles don't take that long to load at logon but we have two specific logon profiles that seem to take a lot longer than any other to load, so I don't think its any of the DNS settings etc as its limited to just a couple no matter where they are loaded. All of our profiles use redirected folders for thier My Documents and a global desktop (same for all users). Any suggestions what I could do to reduce their logon time, can I remove anything from the profile which is not needed (suggestions?) or is it that their My Documents redirected folder has quite alot of files in it? Open to any suggestions.

We have decided to purchase a printer to share between our KS2 classrooms to lighten the load on the current HP2200 inkjet we have in the ICT Suite (which recieves most of the printing from the KS1 and KS2 areas) and so I am open to suggestions for a fairy reliable colour printer with lowish overheads, could be inkjet or laser but would prefer it to be network capable. The current printer has been a faily bomb proof workhorse (touches nearest piece of wood!) but is just getting snowed under with the workload. Trust me to make the system more usable than it was!!!

One of my primaries has decided to have a go at producing a small radio show, news, interviews and music to be played at break times etc. Anyone done this before and what software would you recommend i.e. cheap or even better free, that we could use to sequence the audio tracks into a show for burning on to CD etc for playback later.

Just found on the server that the Sophos scheduler service won't run. Checked the vent log and found that it seemed OK downloading updats through the summer but now its just failed to run after restarting the server after having the power supply changed. All the other Sophos services seem to have started OK aprt from the EM Schedule manager. The error messages are as follows: Failed to initialise the EM Scheduler service. SCHED 0x80040b00 Could not restore active schedules after restart. Failed to open the ssdata.idx file for reading. SCHED 0x80070570 Eventually the EM Manager has appeared on screen and shows the library is 'inaccessible' ? and gives the error: Error 0x80080005 (Server execution failed) occured while accessing server SERVER. Ensure the computer name for the active services is correct. How do I check the c9mputer name for the active service is correct? Any help on sorting this appreciated.
