I seem to be having brain fade or just age catching up with me, but I have connected my wifes laptop to my wireless point in my office and it connects to the Internet no problems at all. Now I want to give it access to my shared printer (I've done this before and don't know why its proving such a problem now!). Can't seem to see any computers on the workgroup (yes, checked they both have the same network name, and IP is dished out by the router). I have tried pinging the laptop with the printer connected to it adn I can ping using 192.168.11.2 but not \\192.168.11.2 or \\mylaptop I have Comodo firewall on the laptop and configured the local network as a safe zone, but no joy, turned off the network and still no joy. Anyone have any suggestions?

All I want to do is to run Zimbra for a couple of classes for interna only email on the network. Should I go for Ubuntu Serer or Desktop edition?

Sorry to jump onto this thread but if I decided to set up Zimbra in school what Linux would people suggest is best to install first, Red Hat, Unbutu, suze ? or Does anyone know if its available as a vmware virtual package ready to run. I found one on vmware but it seems to be the paid version :-(

Yes I've got it to look forward to after Christmas! Really bad way of doing things. Looks like development of the product got the better of them and deadlines meant that some bits were left out or not fixed. Pitty really.

Anyone had any experience of putting this on a network. Got it on a single PC but its a long winded process of local installs. Some of it says its network software but it still has to be installed locally and the only thing network about it is that you can specify a network folder to save the data to!

Thanks for the replies. We initially used them as yourself because they were our local Toshiba laptop dealer and repairer, however as there prices are so good we have decided to maybe give them a go. As you said not had a problem with them on supply, delivery or repair just never had any installations done by them. We have got some details of a few schools done by them so we may follow them up before a final decision.

Anyone ever dealt with ,CBC Computer Systems', based in Sheffield or heard anyone that has. Have got some quotes from them for whiteboard installs and they are quite cheap but not had anything done by them yet so not aware what thier work or after care is like. Have a usual supplier who does a good job but finding it difficult to justify going top them as the price difference is noticable.

Got Norton Internet Security 2005 at home for which the subscription has just run out. What are your suggestions, just upgrade Norton at a cost, pay for another type or what free antivirus and security solutions would anyone reccomend instead of paying for one?

Year 5 need to cover errors in databases, how they can spot them i.e. using graphs to highlight posible errors etc. Maybe set them a database which has errors, and ask them to highlight the errors, then use the internet (searching a large databse) to correct the errors. Collect and record their findings highlighting how they spotted the errors and what the data should have been. Were there any checks they could have been made to stop these errors. Not according to our LEA they are not. They have to be tested every year for 5 years and only then can you apply for them to be listed as static after having proven that they are stable so they need only be tested every few years. Portable..Yeah.

IS that not a fundemental part of being an ICT Tech ? Just what I was thinking, one of the perks of the job isn't it? Anyway, whats the basic difference between a PC and a server...not a great deal. Get the screwdriver out quick before someone else beats you to it and has the fun. Oh and yes, turn the power off, look inside first before even thinking of powering back on. If it wasn't your cup of coffee, enjoy the panic of people running around like headless chickens because they can't get to their files etc. while you have fun taking it apart and slowly drying it out :-)

Our Broadband network does have a booking system for use of their areawide video conferencing network but we are just wanting to look at this at the moment before going with something to contact other schools. Bit an internal project at the moment, so thats why we are looking at purely school network at the moment.

Just been asked by the head if we can video conference, and after discussion it has been decided that we try it in the school first between classrooms etc. as a way of improving the pupils communication skills. Now the technical question..whats the best way and it needs to be free or cheapish. Could we use a decent webcam and software i.e.msn messenger as my only contact with this was in the early days of videoconferencing over dial up and later ISDN with Netmeeting. Forgot to mention it would be nice to have more than one user visible at a time i.e. multi person conference. Not uptodate with MS Mesenger so sorry if these seem simple questions :-)

Whats the best way to make sure that all PC's are set at the same time? I have Server 2003 and all XP clients. Have done it in one school with a batch file that sets the time to that of the server but there must be a better way? Instructions with the suggestions would be helpful :-) and its only Monday!

If its for the cheap headphones then try Maplin (had some from them before, they come in two sizes) but could be just as cheap to get new headphones.

My problem after a few calls to Fujitsu was that the controller on the motherboard had failed in some way as it accepted USB1.1 devices but not any USB2 devices. Changed motherboard (fortunately under warranty) and all seems OK. Funny that happening at work as when I got home one of the external hard drives connected to my laptop had dropped off i.e. not recognised via a powered hub anymore and the other drive had failed. Eventually got the laptop to recognise it by plugging it direct to the ports on the laptop. As a possible solution I have read that discharging all power from the PC (not just turning it off) will solve some problems like this. Worked for a PC with a problem network connection today, so worth remembering as a possible quick fix.

Sorry to bring this back to the top again but need some definate choices on makes models, so far the: HP Colour LaserJet 2605dn (googling it, reports of being noisy and a bit slow) XEROX PHASER 6180DN (Just found a report saying this is slow!!) Any others, Minolta etc. that are not being reported as slow or do I just have to accept that printing photos etc will be slow unless I could pay the earth. Main requirements are speed with photos, quiet, not costing the earth...not wanting much I know :-)
