  1. Right, heres the update...wscript.exe is the culprit. After exahustive testing the network is OK but here where I can see the problem. wscript.exe seems to be run at logon and hogs the processing so everthing slows down. Kill that process and all is OK. Client PC's when logging on the domain seem to start wscript.exe, when I kill it at the PC browsing the internet and server folders etc is OK. Log back off and back on without killing it and all slows down to a standstill. I have amessage that pops up in a dos box telling me that cmd.exe was started in the scripts directory but UNC paths are not supported. Took all scripts off logon and logoff but still appears. Checked in the directory specified and can't see any file's. Any suggestions. Can I block wscript run ning from the server as it seems to be triggered when the gpo is loaded as a laptop that logs on as a workgroup only connects and browses fine. Any suggestions welcome
  2. I presume a loop storm is just a looped cable connection? Don't think so as I am using the server to type this and the internet comes up fine, but when trying it from a client PC linked to the same switch as the server its very slow to get a web page. Tried other switches that are linked to the server switch and they are the same as well. Can't understand why the server is OK and other PC's have slow acces to the server itself and the internet?
  3. Ah well...wscripts does not seem to be the culprit after all although it was at 100%. The network access is still slow (checked the event logs and can't see anything untoward). Any ideas what to check next?
  4. Just had a mare of an afternoon with the system on meltdown as PC' were down to a crawl, accessing the network server etc. Just had a look and found the server was running at 100% and checking the processes found it was wscript at 98%. Killed this process and system seems to have settled somewhat. Any ideas what is causing wscript.exe and can I leave it stopped?
  5. Just checked my schools backup and found that they have started to fail with an "insufficient space" error. I am using an external USB drive to back up to and there is enough free disk space as far as I can see. The disk is formatted to NTFS so there is no file limit. Have googled it and have seen some others getting the error but no real solutions as far as I can see. One report did comment on NTbackup setting two copies tp backup when the backup is started (which would cause an out of space error) but don't understand that comment or what two copies they are reffering to? Anyone got any ideas?
  6. I was beginning to think it was me! Glad (sorry guys) that other are getting this mesage, had it on XP SP2 PC's and the 2003 server! Got Sophos running on the network as well so hope when the update is downloaded it will sort this message out. So far its only me complaining about it at the schools.
  7. Ah!! ( light comes on above head!) now that answers a problem that has cropped up since we created a new small suite in an empty classroom. Funny how the solution is right in front of your face and you can't see it! Best get a print server to solve that one. Cheers guys!
  8. Classic...Absolute Classic..That has been the best thing today  Nice one Tech_guy Creative with the truth!!!! Bit rusty with vb 2008:doh: Quote from Profile: JavaNocKziK has not made any friends yet Think this will change?
  9. Thanks, when I tried it I probably didn't press the key quick enough to catch it so I 'll have another go when I'm next in that school.
  10. Thanks but not even got to a stage where I could enter anything. Just shows a logo screen 'ecoquiet' then boots in to windows. Its the usual f2 etc keys I'm looking for to get to the bios screen as the logo covers the usual messages 'hit f2 to enter bios" etc messages. May have to try the battery removal if all else fails. Just had a Google and it looks like its F2 or DEL, so I'll give those a try next time I'm in.
  11. Got an RM ecoquiet PC to image but can't seem to get in to the bios to set it to boot from the CD. Anyone know what the bios entry keys are?
  12. I have a spare large capacity drive I want to put in a case and use as transportable storage, but all the cases I have looked at seem to have external power supplies with them. Is it only 2.5 drives that can get away without power supplies or can someone suggest a case for a 3.5 drive that does not require external power?
  13. Any one got a batch or script to add a domain user as a local admin I can add to the startup scripts? Don't usually like doing this but I have some softwrae that refuses to run unless they are local admins. I have tried localgroup Administrators /add DOMIAN_NAME\User_Name which runs if I log on as an administrator but fails if I run it as a user due to lack of permissions, catch 22!
  14. As a school we have a license to play music through school using the tanoy system. How are we fixed if I want to make a short school radio show (just announcements and news etc) and include some music in it, then place it on the server as an mp3 for classes to play it back when they want to? Would the normal license cove us or is this one of those new grey areas?
  15. Its not a solution to the excel problem just a comment that I have had this problem when downloading zip files etc from edugeek (other sites seem fine). Downloads OK but can't open it as it says it is corrupt?
  16. As I said I tried Gparted booting from System RescueCD (linux) and using Gparted but got nowhere as it refused to delete andy of the partitions.
  17. Got a spare acer HD from a laptop that I want to use as a bit of mobile storage, however found that the disk is partintioned into three, one small recovery partition and two normal partitions splitting the rest of the disk. Its now installed in a USB case but tried through XP and Gparted to delete the partitions but it just refuses with no specific error! Any ideas how to just change it to one large partition?
  18. Thanks for the heads up on this one. I cover four primaries all with Espresso, although one has now declined the offer to continue with updates because as the teachers rightly said how can they plan to use it if they don't have access to it from home where they do most of their planning. I know Espresso have said they are looking in to this but that could take forever! If we get that message to upgrad at that cost I think it might be the final straw for others to exit stage left and leave espresso behind. Currently out of 4 schools, one has stopped, one is looking at alternatives, one is looking for a reason to stop and the other is using it but a request like that would put an end to it.
  19. Had to install this lot at Easter!!! Installed it all on the server as requested, then came across the problem where its not really a network product as it has to be installed locally and only the database is on the network! However did sort out a way to get it all installed quickly without having to juggle all the CD's though. Install it on the network then on one PC, find out what directories and reg entries it creates and copy those folders and exported entries to a server share. On following PC's install planner from server and rest of files, reg entries and shortcuts etc from server via a batch file. Worked for me anyway and was fairy unattended once the batch file was started. Certainly quicker and less hassle than using the CD's. Someone better would have probably been able to make an msi of my steps to make it install on boot I would have thought and I'm sure ABACUS could have doen this as well. Requested the msi's from ABACUS but they only are worthwhile for RM networks unless I suppose you could edit the msi's.

    Leaving!

You will not regret it, we did the same and it was the best 4 years of work I've had so far. Trouble was when she went to school full time I had alot of empty space in the day and as the story goes ended up helping in school then ended up here as a teachnician\teacher. Enjoy every minute, they soon get to the teenage stage and remember to go to the local parent and toddler group, you end up being a novelty if you can stick it, I managed three years! Try and get some part time work in a school it will keep your hand in and keep your sanity believe me, all day baby talk, seven days a week does take its toll, its not the easiest job but well worth it. Good luck.
  21. Just been told we have £19 of ELC's left to spend and that we must spend them before August, so.... What can I buy with them that would be useful for KS2, I tried and failed as I think £19 will buy me a whole lot of nothing unless as they say you know different!
  22. As an aside does anyone actually have home access to Espresso content (apart from the suggested Virgin users)? Mt schools are not happyas they don't have time at school to plan using it and really need access to it at home. Espresso's email answer is that they are working with LEA's involved to allow access in a rolling programme over the next 12 to 18 months. Believe it when I see it but fear that that time scale may be too far and they will have dumped Espresso for other content before then mainly due to the lack of external access. We have the Espresso Cachpilot box and the LEA controls all other aspects of broadband. We did end up going down the route of smoothwall at one stage but then approx 8 months later the LEA changed mind and took all the boxes as they wer having to go out all the time turning them on when ever there was a power cut etc "My internet won't work!".
  23. Just had to install some software that puts a setting in the users profile. Rather than log on with each user to set the profile setting can I just copy the ntuser.man file to the other profiles, if so, what pitfalls do I have to look out for? I know I could set up a default user to cope with this but we have class profiles and we want to keep them separate.
  24. Just been having a google, and am I right in thinking I could just add this svchost.exe to the excludes list as it should not need to package it anyway?
  25. Just tried to create an MSI for Digital Blue, yes I know its not the best but I'll try anything before walking round with a CD! Followed the network install instructions from the Digital Blue site but it still involves going round with a CD. Now I went through and did the discover with WinInstall etc and it created an nai file but showed an error message as below and does not seem to have created an msi file, usuall any help much appreciated. Severity:1 Message: Error processing service WudfSvc: service executable file svchost.exe not found in package. --------------------------------------------------------- Thanks
