Yep that was helpful thanks, in the meantime I tried PXE to the FOG server and the menu appeared, did the inventory task but it seemed to take ages on each part, eventually gave up and just entered its details manually. So its an upload to an image, couldn't seem to find which option it was from the docs, think I need a "do this, now do this" type of documentation . Will try that tomorrow. So far so good though. I have let FOGF be a DHCP server as I cover 4 primaries and will need to lug this around with me, so any multi or unicasting will be done on independant networks (i.e. any pcs will be connected to the FOG server directly and not on the school network, although I see the advantages with auto join to domain and rename etc.) untill I sort things out more. Currently using PartImage so I have some of the images already and they are apparently compatible with FOG, but may just re-image just the same.

Just installed FOG and Ubuntu but now what? Anyone got a quick and easy set of instructions of how to use it. Set it up to be its own DHCP server (I think I have anyway). Looked at the WIKI and and the task to test the installation but it wants me to add PC's by their host name and mac address. Whats the easiest way to do this if I have a few computers to do?

We have just been supplied with our own Frog VLE (as a pilot for primaries in the LA) and I am looking at how to put activities on it. Went on a Fuse Creator (creating interactive resources...quite nice) and was able to create an activity and then save it as a Scorm file. Uploaded it to Frog via the New Scorm menu item which went OK but how do I run it? Just seems to throw up error telling me its not initialised. Even uploaded it in its folder format which I have on a flash drive (which it works perfectly well on) but it then tells me it needs to run a java script file? The file is there just in its own directory structure. Any help most welcome!

Thanks for the replys, as these are netbooks swapping drives and adding as slaves not the easiest but anyway, sorted it out. It was my inexperience of Gparted and imaging in the end. Just used Gparted on the RescueCD, deleted everything, created new one, formatted, marked as boot, then used Partimage to image the partition from an image on a USB drive and hey presto, one copied laptop. Still must look into settinmg up a FOG server though. Did try it using PING but it suggested it was going to take 3hrs to just create the image so just decided to Partimage the drives on to/from a USB HD..22mins! Would FOG be any quicker (19.5Gb of data) and why? Hey ho...6 done only 14 to go!

Love to see the justification to spending on that little lot (I know it would make sense to spend it before you ask) I too work in a couple of primaries and money is scarce at the moment for anything but essential ICT.

Tried doing it using the Gparted tool on the Linux Rescuecd (also includes Partimage which I am using to clone the partitions) but can't seem to get it to work correctly. Seems to fail but them again just had an idea why! I left the final partition and just resized it, probably have been better deleting it and creating a new one so that it starts from scratch as if I just imaged on to the resized one it left bits somewhere that were part of the initial install. Funny how things make more sense when you write it down! Thanks

Just bought one of these and intending to buy one for another school as well. They look just the job.

Got to image some Samsung Netbooks which is not a problem, however they come with three partitions on the drive and we want them as a single partition. Whats the quickest way to clear the drive and create a new partition of the whole disk. Can do it at the moment but its a convoluted way and with a few to do looking to cut down the time. When I get more time I will be looking into setting up a Fog server!

I have just started to look at setting up out new set of Samsung netbooks. I have previously used Partimage as part of the RescueCD and imaged individual PC's to and from an external HD with no problems, however with 20 netbooks to do decided to take the plunge and look at multicasting the image. Set up a PC to act as a PXE server without problem and then set up PING. Tried to image the base PC and it logged on via PXE :-), strated the image software :-), then started to image the disk :-), but then after a short while it just crashed and did not complete the image :-(. Thinking it was the imgaes server PC found a different one and set up again with the same result. Imaged the disk eventually to an external HD using partimage on the RescueCD no problems. Any ideas what it could have been, any error messages seen seem to be about a slow response before it crashed. Can only think it may have been the hd setup on the client pc or the network card (they are Fujitsu esprimos). Or should I just throw the towel in and go the FOG route or would i get the same problem as it uses Partimage as well? Edit: Just looked at the FOG site for compatible hardware and they suggest that for Fujitsu PC's you need the adjust the SATA settings in the Bios to compatible or advanced depending on the model so that may be where my problem was. Go the image now so I'll see what happens when I have sorted out the image on the Samsung for multicasting etc.

No, its definately the HD not the light. Ran a scandisk previously with no effect.

On my home PC the Hard Disk seems rather noise when it is accessing the disk, (I was given the PC and it has always sounded this way), runs fairly well but does seem to access the disk quite alot. I have 1Gb ram (max it can take) but even when accessing a web page or starting a program it seems to access the disk quite a lot (maybe I'm noticing it more because its noisy?). Would this be because its a slow hard disk maybe and wouild swapping the HD have a significant benefit on performance. Its a SATA drive. The drive is a: Western Digital Caviar SE SATA WD1600JD Read Seek Time 8.90 ms (Average) Controller Buffer Size on Drive 8 MBytes if that helps? P.S. I have run a virus and spyware check etc. Its been like this since I was given it, maybe thats why it was being given away!

Just got to install a Hitachi projector up in a classroom and I need to find out the thread size that is in the projector. Don't have the previous mounting screws (thrown away!), looked in the manual and no joy and looked on the case and no inication. Anyone got any ideas? Think they are usually a univera=sal size, but what size, then I can get some new ones.

Got a teacher laptop that after the teacher accepted an update for itunes and rebooted the laptop gets to the log on screen, enter user and password ( even admin) it logs onto the desktop (no icons) then automatically logs off back to the logon screen! Any ideas for a quick fix as rather than spend alot of time on it I'd just reinstall everything from scratch.

We currently have a a couple of small Belkin access points in classrooms and this morning the head has asked what would it cost to give the whole school a wireless network to which my technical reply was 'possibly lots'. So...has anyone any idea of ballpark figure and what kind of equipment I would need to give a good wireless network over the school. Its not a large school as its a primary and only one class per year group and the network would have to run along side of the existing wired network. Can't see the point myself for what use it would have as its only the teachers who have wireless laptops and they are always plugged in to the wired network and attached to a smartboard, but he wants a roaming caperbility.

Know the feeling after having a Toyota, it was light years ahead of the rest of the market at the time (it was a H reg corolla). Had a citroen AX while I went to uni (G reg) and although only a year older there was no comparison in terms of equipment, quality, reliability etc etc. Was spoilt before with a 2.0 GLS Cavalier and the Honda might fit the bill, power and reliability

On the subject of training I have been on a couple of YHGfL funded courses, there were not of the technical size of things as I teach as well, but they come in quite handy, e-safety etc. In fact I'm due to be at your offices on a course on Thursday looking at some e-learning resource software 'Fuse', so I hope the lunches are up to scratch and save me a car parking space reserverd for an eduGeek user!

Thanks for the replys, been googling around and it seems that the C4 is either a hit or a miss and the main problem people seem to claim is reliability. Undecided now as I have seen a Honda Civic (not the latest model) but a 2.0 S for quite a decent price and not a great deal of mileage.

Not a Form man myself and already got an Astra (albeit an S reg). It won't be a new car as I don't have the money even with the new scrapage deal. Had a Toyota Corolla years ago and still say it was the best car fro the money I ever had so far but for a recent model they just keep their price far too well for my limited budget, same goes for the Golf unfortunately.

Has anyone got a Citroen C4 or has any views on what they are like? Maybe getting ready to change cars and need some independant views on the C4 as a choice. Was thinking along the lines of a 1.6SX hatchback. Other than that any other choices to consider for that size/engine size of car?

That should do it, its for some software that won't run correctly (due to permissions etc) from a share over the network (and is very slow when a full class wants to use it) so tried it locally and its fine so just need to copy the folder locally and then put the icon on the global desktop. Speaking of icon and desktop how would I copy a shortcut to the all users desktop if I needed to as staff don't get the global desktop.

Whats the best way of has anyone got a script that I can run at logon to copy a folder from the server to the PC's but check to see if it exists first so it does not try to copy it every time it logs on.

Had that once before (or very similar) and it turned out to be interferrence being picked up by the USB cable, re routed it and all OK. It has been said that the boards are very sensitive to emf even from the wall it is installed on. I think the newer boards have specific instructions on this.
