I have a FOG server (Ubuntu) installed on a CachePilot (better than its original use as an Espresson server!) and its working OK but as it has two network ports can I utilise them together to create a better speed to image the PC's. I am using a 24 port Linksys (model SRW224G4) switch between the Cachepilot and the Clients. Anyone got any ideas about how to set it up? As far as I have read on the Cisco (Linksys) site about the switch, it is capable of doing it, but most of the setting s I can see are Greek to me

Just installed v9.7.103 Smartboard software on a laptop and it keeps telling me when it starts that Imust download the latest updates before I use the product, then connects to the net and informs me I am fully up to date (which it is for V9.7). I have unticked the Check for Updates box but it still insists on checking. Any way I can stop it, registry hack etc?

Ahhhh...the penny drops! Think I have it now, Normal server to be set so that it points to FOG for any requests for PXE booting, FOG takes over then and allows the client to boot of the network, with any other client booting on the same network using our normal servers DHCP. Think it was a case of me getting PXE and DHCP a bit mixed up. Just a quick question (again probably my lack of knowledge of PXE and DHCP) which server issues the IP, FOG or DHCP? If I'm thinking correct, its DHCP issues the IP and then boots from FOG's PXE software.

What is the best way to update FOG to the latest version without changing any of my current setup settings, images etc.?

Just started to play around on FOG at hoem and just got a follow up question which is probab;y just a misunderstanding of the technology. The FOG server is set up on my network at home with my router as the DHCP, when a client wants to boot from FOG I have to turn on the FOG server DHCP service, therefor having two DHCP servers on the network. Is that correct, I know when I use this in a school I'm going to have to tell our normal server that FOG is the pxe dhcp server, but will having DHCP running on the FOG server cause problems...if so what should I do about it? As I said probably just a misunderstanding of how it works on my part

Just had a look at that and wondered how it could be told to save elsewhere. Trouble is the staff want to be able to access the program from anywhere on the network and the program does not like that with our security settings. If I install to a shared drive and run it I don't see the years to select only if I let the user be a local admin of that PC! Why don't they just talk to people first before they create software like this. Any way got around it by installing it on her laptop so they can fill in the data anywhere in the school!

Any details of how to do it or where I could look for some good info, seen the info somewhere but can't remember where?

Maybe I need to expalin, I work in 4 schools, each with their own DHCP servers, I have a single PC setup as a FOG server (with its own DHCP for PXE etc) and I would like to use the FOG server in each school as its not worth setting one up in each and I don't want to have two DHCP servers on the network at any one time. Hence the reason I want to know if its easy to change the location FOG looks for a DHCP server and how to turn of FOGs DHCP (I know I would have to configure the schools servers to dish out IP's when PXE is required) but at least I could take the FOG server to each school. If its going to be too messy I just carry on as I am and do any imaging on an independant little network just set up for that each time.

Thanks for that, had delved in to the help files and found out about setting the GPO template in the mean time however those last 4 seetings are not in the file so will set them when I am next in.

On the issue of DHCP and FOG, is there a quick and easy way to change where fog looks for a DHCP server if it does not use its own (withoput re installing it) and how would you turn FOG's DHCP server if you had already installed it?

Not the 6110 but we use the 6180 and its been fine, the only bug bear is the cost of toner at around £500 for a full set of high capacity toners, as a primary school thats killing our budget at the moment.

I've just installed WSUS and its downloaded all its relevant updates, I've approved them, I've set a test group and add a PC in to it, I've approved them for that group but...how do I set when a PC is to get the updates? Found when to synchronise the server with the source update files but where do I set when the client updates?...or do I need to?

Just downloaded the Admins admin toolbar (great little tool) extracted it to my memory stick but get an error when it starts and it quits when you OK the error. Message reads: AutoIt Error Line -1: Error: Unable to execute the external program. The system cannot find the file specified. Any ideas whats wrong, used to be able to run t from my memory stick wit a previous version. Just seen someone else had this problem, any solutions. Running it on Win XP Pro as an administrator, installed on a memory stick if thats any help? Just copied it on to my PC and its still looking for a missing file :-(

Had that in one of my schools, I think it was set as a standard set down for them somewhere (before I started) that they should always run two cables...which they did, terminated them both with plugs at the cabinet end and as they only wanted to use one at the room end...they snipped the spare one off short so it can't be used! So a right snakes nest at the server end and only half the cables appear at the sockets! Was a nightmare to find out where it all went.

Had a similar one where a user logged in it copied all the folders from another user to their folder, then deleted the users folder it was copying from! Not quite the same but it was all tied up with me altering a default user profile I had created, unlocking it making changes etc. Had to create a new home folder for the user that had all their data moved elsewhere and job sorted, not exactly a fix but a work around, no more problems so far. Would not have noticed it except they had loads of photos stored in and it just killed our network when two or three users using the default profile logged in causing all the other users data to be copied across the network! Anyway, have you made any changes to profiles recently maybe?

The key to the problem turned out to be as Isaid I was trying to go from a 40Gb disk to a 30Gb disk and I don't think any options would do that, but as I said a bit of lateral thinking won the day. Great what a bike ride does to clear the mind and get a few ideas roaming about that big space between my ears! Bit like today actually, wondering why the backups were failing, then realising I had set a scheduled backup to run every day instead of just on a Monday, hence why it was complaining it could not have access to files etc...because the tuesday, wednesday etc jobs were trying to do the same thing Oh well, at lleast thats a good start to the week...all down hill from now on then..started of with a good sunday night watching Jenson fullfill his dream...is it all downhill from now.

Would be interested in replies to this, usually if targets are mentioned in the meetinmg they are usually paying the mortgage and getting through to the end of that particular half term!

Well tried and Clonezilla worked to an extent...except I wanted to clone to a smalle HD :-(, ah well...sorted it in the end, put HD in another laptop with working CD Drive, installed using original restore disks, returned HD to original laptop, continued installing software from USB cd Drive...Job Done...(before anyone asks, the original laptop would not recognise the usb HD or CD at boot time thats why I needed an OS on first, there in lay the problem. Thanks for the support once again.

The laptop will not boot from a usb drive so really need to clone from a floppy from installed hd to external usb (thats if the image software will find the usb drive!) Thanks for the replys will investigate clonezilla.

What free software will image a disk to a usb drive then allow me to image back to a different sized disk. Must not need a cd as thats what is the problem, the laptop I'm trying to get up and running has a faulty one and will read the first of the original restore disks but refuses to read fully the second! Just tried partimage but it refuses as the original partition image is larger than the one I want to put it on.

Just had an email from monarch and the issue was to do with their older (up to dec 2008) LF range of trolleys (metal frames). They now state the new trolleys (the ones with big rubber handles) is safe as it meets all safety guidelines in agreement with the HSE. Bit happier now as all ours are the new type, still have to state not to be unplugged by a child, notice of any dangers, checks on cables, storage of unwound cable etc but thats OK, I can manage with that!

Well they are going to make it really portable to take around school!, Do I now have to have to change the wall sockets everywhere I need the trolley to be? If I do arn't I hoing to be Mr Popular!

Quick but not teaching the kids anything just delaying the time they have to learn. Why? You may be surprised how capable they are.
