Having a strange problem with FTP to my own website, all was working fine last month now I can't get access to it or telnet to check it from my laptop. I tried it from another laptop and all seems OK. This was checked via dial up, and wireless connection via the home router, yet when I use my own laptop using dial up, router network or wireless router network its no go! so I presume it down to a setting on my laptop. Now I can ftp into my isp based website OK and my schools ftp (on another provider) ok from my laptop, so any ideas where I need to look to solve the problem? Checked with hosting company (yes I know its FastHosts!) and they say all is OK checked using and internal and external connection check so its something at my end, which the laptop trial seems to prove, just don't know where to look now?

We had a similar thing, staff new to networks, set them up with default passwords which they wanted... now when I started doing audits of printing, it was a case of I didn't print all that, someone must be logging on as me with my password! Now they all wanted to change their passwords!!! Still hasn't changed the main culprits for printing thought, just makes it more definate on who prints what with my auditing :-) Another thing is they log on a PC, do a quick job then walk away leaving it logged on and apparently its the systems fault that someone else jumps on a logged in PC to run off a quich print job! Not quite figured out their logic behind that one yet?

Wish I'd started using msi's ages ago , but now I have its just saved myself stacks of time. Thanks for the replys, I'll sort that next time I'm in. What triggers the software to install and some PC's just needed rebooting from the button on the PC yet some needed the power turning off then rebooting to get them to pick up the new software? They are working just curious as to why. Not a major problem as I just post a message on the notice board for all PC's to be turned off.

Just started pushing software out using MSI's and have created an OU with the domain computers inside it so that they are updated with the software. All so far so good and installs going ahead. Now I want to just install some new software on just a few of those PC's, so do I now have to create a new OW inside the existing OU with the computers in it so that both OU sets of software install on the new PC's and only the first set of software install on the rest? Not at work at the moment so doing this from memory :-)...or am I thinking of this all wrong? i.e. I presume I can't have computers in two OU's at once!

Have installed Oxford Reading Tree "Floppy and Friends" on the network but have strange fonts appearing randomly, looked at the web site and got the following, Q, The stories/activities are displaying strange characters, how can I resolve this? The short answer is: relax the security settings on the system fonts folder. Basically, if the problem occurs in Windows XP or 2000, it is probably because the story is not able to save the font to a temporary location on the hard drive. If the user's access to the hard drive is increased, it will work. However an oversight between Macromedia and Microsoft means that the temporary folder Director uses, is actually locked down under some levels of security both on XP and to a lesser extent 2000. In these cases the Director movie picks a system font (seemingly at random) that it feels may be most appropriate. Suffice to say, the problem can be removed by relaxing the level of security imposed on the local machine. Obviously don't want to relax the security so anyother ideas or come across this before?

Maybe misleading but Xavier is our network domain name. Just another error message but any ideas on this one, its listed as MrxSmb with this message. Again plain english as looked at MS and no clearer! The redirector failed to determine the connection type. Event Id: 3019

Had some intermittent problems with the network going down over the last few weeks but of course it happens when I'm not in that school and can investigate. They have shut the server down and restarted it and all seems well. Now in the school and had a look at the error logs and came across this entry. Can anyone explain it a bit more in plain english and if it would have been connected to the network problems: The name "XAVIER :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 10.xx.xx.10. The machine with the IP address 10.xx.xx.113 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine. The PC that has the 113 address allocated to it is the Y6 teachers laptop and the 10 address is the domain server. Thanks

How do I reserve a drive letter puely for a USB memory stick. I have a computer that has memory card slots that take up the first few drive letters and the next free letter for a drive has been mapped out as a network drive and guess what, any memory stick wants to take that drive letter. I did see something once that reserverd letters but don't know if it would work in this situation. Come on guys I know someone will have had this before.

Paper Cut Print Logger is free, it does not manage the printers, just log what is printed by who, but what does manage the printing is putting a graph using the collected data on the staff room wall for all to see! The graph of shame has certainly made an impact where I have used it.

Just a quick question, I am looking at setting up some software to install via the GPO, I have a set of instrtuctions but not sure where to creat the new GPO. I want to create an OU so I can add specific computers into it while I test it ou. Do I just right click the balby.local root and create a new OU then create a GPO on this new OU, then any computers placed in the new container will have the MSI GPO applied to them? I've got all the details to create the GPO etc just trying to confirm the best way to start. Sorry it these seem simple questions! I've added a screen grap of the AD just so you can see what I already have in case itr makes any of my ramblings any clearer.

Why when trying to download files from the forum do I now have a problem. Tried two different files now (both zip files) and they go through the process of downloading but when I look at them they are only 1K and if they look the correct size they won't open, sayimng the file may be corrupt. Any ideas? I have downloaded other files from other sites and they download OK just seems to be from this forum.

Thanks for the replies, I set one logging last night but will probably do another few just to prove my case. What would you suggest I use to ping.? I tried tracert on my isp web page and set it to the first hop ip, but reset it to google after I thought they might object to a continuous ping being sent to it and I don't want to get their backs up when I want their help:)

Thanks Mattx, look forward to it. What in the end was your problem with your ISP. Mine is that as I said it just goes to sleep and I have to wait for it to eventually load the page. Thanks Mattx, got the file, had a look at it, but can I make it ping my connection virtually constantly to create a log of when my internet connection si down or having problems as that what I really want to do. My broadband connection just goes to sleep regularily these days and want some evidence for my ISP to show it not just me imagining it or is there some other software I should be using but it needs to log the times etc when the net is not available i.e. web pages just won't load.

Just the thing I wanted as was just going to post if anyone had a suggestion for something to do that..what timing...trouble is everytime I try to download it it says corrupt file. Anyone email it to me please? tech.support @ central.doncaster.sch.uk

Had this happening before but now its happened again. Had some new PC's delivred that the company had imaged for us before delivery. I changed thier name and created new SID's before adding them to the domain. All went well and that was just before Christmas, now this morning I had three of them at login say that they could not access the domain. Taking them off the domain and then readding them allowed them to work fully again as normal. Had this before with some PCs that had been imaged and once re added to the domain they have not caused a problem since, so hoping this is the case again but what causes it in the firts place. All other PC's have been fine and even PC's imaged at the same time as the three that played up this morning?

Just been setting up Ubunto to install Zimbra as an email server. Long story is that I first installed server but couldnt find my way around so installed the desktop gui after help on here. I finally managed to install Zimbra and get it working but now wondering how much of an overhead the Desktop is as the PC is not high spec (cant remember CPU but it has 256Mb) and it is on the slow side. Would it improve if I could remove the desktop gui and if so how as I have a laptop now with Ubunto on to play with or..should I just install server again and reinstall Zimbra now that I have done it once :-) I have another 256Mb somewhere I'm sure so that will be going in after half term. I only really need it to teach email to some Y3's so it won't be getting alot of hammer. Advice as always welcome

Been having some problems with browsing websites since Christmas (pages timing out, the web just stopping for a minute, videos pausing etc), thought it was initially just the Christmas rush of new users online etc, but still having problems, so raised it as an issue with my provider (Force9 or Plusnet now). They have now asked for interleaving to be turned on my line by the suppliers i.e.BT. What if any difference is this likely to make and what is interleaving anyway? Before anyone jumps in that its all down to Force9 being the supplier I have been quite happy with them since leaving Compuserve all those years ago and not had any speed or connection problems since, well just since Christmas, thank god I can still get on here though:D

Thanks for those figures so far. I had been working on a cosyt of 2p for the mono and 15p for the colour. Not bothered about TCO just the cost of toners as this half term has been terrible for usage. We use the PaperCut software to monitor whats printed by whom and then use the data it produces in a spreadsheet with a lookup table to make sense of it. So I know how many prints they do but need to put a price to it for impact.

Can anyone give me an idea what print costs per page the following printers would be. Trying to put a more realistic message across over the useage of the printers at school. Just telling them how many prints they have done is not having an impact. Hope telling them in money terns would have more of an impact. Printers we use are HP2500n (colour laser), HP1015 (mono laser) and a Xerox 6180DN (colour laser).
