Some good suggestions there, though we try to keep to originals. HP is looking good at the moment. Anyone use anything else. Seen a Xerox on Misco's site at 199.99 which looks quite fast and consumables look reasonable. Anyone had any dealing with Xerox colour printers?
-
Yes we do that one of my schools but in this school the repro room where it would go is no where near the central ICT suite where we want the printer to be, so although its more costly to run we need it as a separate printer

What suggestions do we have for a good reliable colour laser printer that when printing photographs we will not have to wait ages for the prints to appear. We were looking at a price of around £2-300. Have a HP2500 now but its starting to show its age and it takes ages to print said photographs. Throughput is not great but as a primary school the more we can get out of each toner the better.

This has been asked before and I can only say the best I have found so far, for Primary schools are: http://www.rm.com/Primary/Products/Product.asp?cref=PD457357 So far (crossing fingers, touching wood etc) I have had very few problems with them. Does help warning them that they are under pain of death if they break them and encouraging them to 'grass' on each other if they see them biting the cable or usingthem roughly which would get a short term ban from using them. :-)

I might be interested in the jet direct card if thats still not made its way into the bin yet. I have a HP 2500n that has a removable card in the back that has died. I could post you a picture to compare it to if thats OK just to see if its the same.(this one just unscrews and pulls out of the back).

Just got a powered Hub and plugged it in and now that doesn't get recognised (perfectly OK in another PC), even my memory stick doesn't get recognised now!! But... the UPS device when I moved it to one of the free ports that doesn't recognised my new drive or hub it works!!! Any ideas if its something in Windows (server 2003) or maybe hardware in the server? Need to get this sorted very soon.

Thats exactly the kind of example I was asked about when the bill arrived! Need to ask what exactly we are getting for the money. We pay extra to another company for email and web site hosting, so that not included in the broadband costs.
-
Geez!!!! The average bill just landed here was on average in the couple of thousands of pounds depending on number of pupils. We are supposed to have a superfast 10meg connection for that, web filtering and a few other bits that most don't use as far as I know.
-
Just as a general question, how much do you pay for your broadband connection. I've just spend the morning scraping the chins of my primaries off the floor after they found out how much they have just been billed for it! And another question is what do you actually get for your money?

Hi Got a very similar problem, however the drive was recognised by the server (its an extra usb hard drive for the server to back up on to, Freecom 500Gb) when it was first installed. It is also recognised by any other PC that it is plugged in to. Now when it is plugged in to the server it says that it is recognised and ready to use (think thats the freecom part as thats the first bit recognised when its plugged in elsewhere) then it reporst that it is not recognised and not working. We started having problems with backing up on to it at the start with write delayed errors. Then the drive not being available to browse. Now it just isnt be recognised at all on the server. Now do you think its a power problem as above or a USB problem on the server. The server is a Fujitsu-Siemens Econel 50 if that helps.

I'm trying to create a dynamic chart in Excel, i.e. it updates when more data rows are added. Done the first bit of getting that to work, but now its trying to apply it to my own spreadsheet. How do I count the number of cells in a row that have data in them so I know the range to be plotted. Have tried Count and Counta but they count the cell if it has a formulae in it as its therefore not empty. I need to find out what cells don't have a value in it, wether or not it has a formulae in it.

Hi, I'm on the look out for a spare laptop power supply if anyone has one luring about, unloved and not wanted in a drawer somewhere. Its for a Compaq Evo1015v Laptop, 18.5v 90W 4.9A. Could have to buy one in the end but they are about £45-50 so on the lookout for one cheap i.e. free (plus postage of course) if anyone has one.

Got any details of where, when and how much these courses cost. Can they be done distance learning etc or do they have to be done at a centre? Might be my next avenue of progession if I could get funding.

BBC News- Give laptops to pupils, MP Urges- what's your view
TechSupp replied to Horizon's topic in General Chat
They are so short sighted. The only see the shiney new laptop and the smiling kids faces not the broken keyboards, extra software licences to be paid for etc. Talikng of licences, we use office, who's going to fund the cost of the extra licences that it would require as I'm sure none of that has been included in his buget prices. Think you can tell I'm against the idea of laptops for all. Now if he wants to buy all new desktop computers for all in the school then thats a different story. Would just have to find somewhere to put them! -
4GB SD card for less than £15......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TechSupp replied to acrobson's topic in General Chat
Got to admit I'm sad as I love it when threads get to the stage of I remember when and on that note my first 'proper' computer cost me £400 and was an XT PC with 512KB or Ram. then after a 386 I bought my first laptop a 386sx (i.e. you had to buy the maths coprocessor seperately which of course I did!), it came with a whopping 1Mb or Ram which I eventually upgraded to a staggering 5Mb for the princely sum of another £400. Incidentally I bought a Cannon BJ10sx mono printer to go with it, which I still have after having sold it once to someone then when they changed to a modern colour printer I got it given back and I still use it every so often when I need to take a printer away with me! Think I'd better stop there..... -
Got a strange one or it is to me. Just tried setting up a default user profile so that all students will use the same mandatory settings. Set up the profile OK and set permissions to use it. Created a test user and set it to use the created default profile I created. All seemed well untill I realised it didn't run the logon scripts. Reset to its original profile and they ran OK. Reset to the default profile, logged on and browsed the script folder on the server from the client PC. Tried to run the script manually and got a permission denied! Yet it works with the original profile. Anyone tell me why and how I can sort it out? Didn't think profiles would change how permissions are used.

I cover four primaries and their websites are designed\managed as follows: 1 Site built by me using frontpage and kept simple so they could update it on a regular basis. Reality, I now update the site when required, newsletters each week, photos etc when given. 2 Site built by myself, to be updated by myself. Reality, still waiting for info from school to update it with. 3 Site designed by school but written by external company. School supplies data for site to be updated by external company (one man band) Reality, site doesnt get updated regularily due to cost of external company updating site. 4 Site now uses ProCMS to allow office staff to update site with news etc. Reality, site not updated regularily due to office staff not having time or technical ability to use the software.

Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Thanks, thats what we are aiming towards, just that at some point they were roaming profiles and now I just need to back up a little and remove all the rubbish they created i.e. the local profiles etc. Thanks for the info (thats everyone) its cleared up quite a few questions I had of the dark arts of roaming and mandatory profiles. -
Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
But surely if its not written to if mandatory profiles are used and any software that requires an entry in that folder will have its entry in the local copy (default user) for which ever PC it was installed on, then its only use is for roaming profiles which I am trying to get away from. If you understand my logic, I'm doing well for a Sunday night!!! If you didn't, don't worry, think I've enough amunition now to attack the slow logons. Thanks -
Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
As 'maniac' says, they delete the Application Data folder from the server based mandatory profile (seems logical and Ok after your explanation to my question about it) so just asking is there a script that would do this task. -
Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
From Maniac's earlier reply I presumed it was the profiles on the server as the local ones are to be deleted so they don't interfere with the logon process. -
Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Whoopee! Sorts that little problem out, as if I swap them over to a central profile and I need to reset anything I'll only have to delete one folder :-) -
Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
As a slight aside, if I manually delete the Application Data folder from the users profile and make sure the ntuser.man is set, when the user logs on then off will the directory be recreated, thus forcing me to delete the foleder again so it won't be copied again at the next logon or is it not created due to it being a mandatory profile? Sorry for the inane questions be we have all got to learn somewhere and don't ever see me going on any courses that would enable me to answer my specific questions. -
Slow logon for two profiles?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Here it is, just did a search on the forums: http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10194&highlight=delete+local+profile+script This could be whats causing the problems as peolpe are starting to complain that logon is progressivly getting slower (although times are between 40 to 90 seconds). The original problem is I think the size of the profiles and I will sort that by making a small default profile mandatory for them. Just need to get the best way to delete the Application directory. Thanks Guys, God am I glad of this forum for tech support.
