  1. Thanks, i'll look in to that.
  2. Nothing found yet so as an interim solution just declined the updates about 10 of them dated 8/2/11. Will investigate further and let you know if I find anything. Looked at one mini dump so far but it was blank. Plenty more to look at :-(
  3. Anyone had any issues with recent MS updates causing PC's to BSOD. I've got a few that have the BSOD. Restored to a system checkpoint before the updates and its fine, allow it to update with the updates and after reboot it DSOD's after rebooting getting in to windows. Clients are XP by the way.
  4. After yesterdays little escapade any more info on how you do this and what software required, maybe a dummys guide?
  5. Problem is i wish i had a server room! I would if we did but its ac primary and space is a premium so it comes lower on the list and its historic in the fact that the networks just evolved from a simple.pc with a share in w98, to just being replaced by a server and by then all cables are in place and the servers home is just beneath a workbench. 3 out of my 4 schools are like that, the other which is also getting a new server at half term has a 6' cabinet which atbleats keeps everything central and safe. So on the pat testing side sometimes dont get any warning its being done, and dont know how i stand with it being near pupils and not in a secure room. On the one with a cabinet did manage 5 years without a test! :-)
  6. Ha! I wish! closest I've recently come to going abroad and then we goit stuck in Florida due to the volcano! Hmm...maybe that was not so bad! Migration now planned for half term for new server :-) Fingers crossed till then!
  7. How do I reset the corrupt log? I cleared all the other event logs, but presume resetting a log is different. Thanks for all the support as usual. Only other problem was the main printer had dissapeared! Reinstalled and its fine (so far!). Will not be turning it off and new server is now a priority! Was needed anyway but its now jumped to the very top of the list. Could be HD's as had a server of the same type and age fail the other year.
  8. Just looking at event logs systembhas a red cross and says corrupt log file, is this pointing to hardware failure? Its up and running now...breaths sigh of relief...anything i should check in mean time, its not going to be turned off till new server arrives.
  9. Update: its server 2003. Its now at a stage of booting and got further than it has before. Its letting me remote desktop on to it and now log on at the monitor, but still a brown trouser moment. That thought of we need an new server has become priority now! Suppose we were asking for a problem at some moment its running wsus, sophos, printers and everything else, p4 with 512 ram and its now 6 years old. Time to change. Thanksfor all suggesdions, great at time of great stress!
  10. Just had server pat tested and come restart server gets as far as applying computer settings and restarts! Any ideas where to go crom here? I've done the restart and pray bit but no joy. Lack of server knowledge means need advice quick.
  11. Where did you get the latest drivers (samsung?) from as I've got some of these that need updating. Mine just wont give me the global desktop but do connect (not Ruckus just yet).
  12. Got to install Sophos on a new server (2008) in a couple of weeks, I'm presuming that as its a new install I should not need to be worried about the previously mentioned issues? Done a few from 3.1 to 4 on 2003 by total uninstall then reinstall and worked fine just wondering if any issues particularily with 2008 install?
  13. Could do but LA has all the details for account etc and we usually have to deal with them. Might investigate it though.
  14. Phew! (apparently Phew! was too short a message!)
  15. We have just been issued with new DNS ip settings as the LA is taking over supply of Internet from YHGfL. They have very handily come and manually configured the admin PC's (which I usually dont touch anyway) and just said here are your new settings! Having never done anything with DNS on our curriculum server need a bit of confirmation on what I have done so far. On our curriculum server (our DNS server), gone into DNS panel, brought up the properties and selected the forwarders tab and changed the ip's that were there to the new ones, removed the old ones and applied the settings. Do I need to do anything else to make them effective or is that it? and is there anything I need to do to check its applied properly? Started a client and it seems to work, internet etc.
  16. Just been looking at prices of licences and media for our new (to be) server and was surprised that comparing to the last server we had (6 years ago) it is going to cost us less this time. Server 2008 compared to server 2003 is 20 odd pence less, the CD to go with it is £9 less, the upgrade to W7 compared to the previous upgrade to XP is £2.50 less! Only one to go up is the CAL and they are only 23p more! Couldnt believe it, thought it would be alot more after 6 years!
  17. Just the info I was looking for
  18. Thanks, must admit, looked at those pages before i posted but was just bewildered by the options and knowing which options were relevant to me. Only thing i gleaned was that if i wanted to virtualise a server i would need the enterprise version...i think. Dont know if that would be relevant to our small situation anyway, nice but necessary...hmmm?
  19. Which version of server 2008 should I get? We currently have 2003 standard and are getting a new server so want to get the right version. Presume I need to get the R2 version but which flavour after that, Standard again, enterprise etc. We are a primary school, and will have the old 2003 server running the WSUS and Printers with the new server running Sophos, AD, DHCP and all the standard bits and pieces. No admin SIMS etc, no intranet etc.
  20. Old server is keeping same name so thats ok, cant have sophos on old pc as not enough room, which is one of reasons for server change, so new install on new server. Its good enough spec and not doing a great deal else so should cope. Any ideas on the 2008 flavour we should get?
  21. Thanks for all the helpfull suggestions, think I know where to go with this now. I am going with the suggestion of new license 2008 and cals for the new server and then leaving the old server as it is to just cope with printers and Wsus (presume i can leave wsus where it is or will i have to re install on new server?) The new one will run dhcp, ad and sophos. Seems the sensible option when sitting down to look at it. Reading through the forum it seems there are various versions of 2008, which one should i get, it will be 64 bit which ever version i think. Will ease the changeover with leaving printers on the old one. Any more suggestions always welcome.
  22. So i presume there are no issues with running 2008 and 2003 servers on the same network then? Its a good idea but that means buying a 2008 license acnd all the cals with it. Might save that for when we move to 2008 and W7 and at thte moment if the license is for the institution install 2003 on the new one, decomission the old one and re evaluate how things are going then. The old server is not a greaer spec so may end up as extra storage and print server as a new install (2003) when we eventually move to 2008 as we wil stil have the 2003 license. Thanks, great idea there, set me thinking. As usual all this future upgrade is dependant on funds available and at the moment they are in short supply so the date to change to 8K and W7 may slip further into the distance!
  23. Just looked at the cd and it is the volume license type, printer on the disk.
  24. If we decide to stick with 2003 till we change to W7, then do i have to buy a new license for the new 2003 install (it was bought under the select license agreement through the LA if that means anything) if the old one is decomissioned as a server? I would presume the original cals would be ok? The install code was the same when we bought a server for one of the other schools years ago so would that make it a volume license like the xp ones we buy through the same agreement?
  25. Thanks, so just to confirm i will need to purchase a license for 2008 (which version should i get?) And a cal for each pc that will connect to it (or is that maximum individual connections at any one time?) Sorry if daft questions but never had to deal with this minefield before!
