I wrote about Minecraft in Edu in Sep 2010 but didn't expect it would have any legs yet to my astonishment the company I work for has been asked to provide a "safe and secure" Minecraft hosting solution for schools. Here is what we do have: Lots of hosting space/power/capacity. A front end that takes a user/password and authenticates them through to the embedded JSP. A solid understanding of auth on Apache inc. Shib. Here is what we don't have: An active interest/time to learn about the Minecraft server. Here is what I need: Someone that has experience of the Minecraft server to potentially do an hour or so consultancy/configuring a minecraft server deployment w/ bukkit and a bunch of config changes. The main config chance is I want to be able to only allow access once the user has authenticated with the front end[apache/php based auth] w/ the scope of expanding to Shib based SSO in the future. I would also be interesting in hearing your thoughts/opinions/experiences of the use Minecraft in education and if anyone would be interested in us trying to negotiate Edu licensing(unless this already exists[i can't find it!]). We're more of a development company w/ a focus on technology than a focus on pedagogy we have partnered w/ a company that will be providing the lesson plans etc. Note: I'm aware of @minecraftteachr --

I had a terrible experience with this software, has anyone else tried it? I found quite a few things wrong with it but I'm always "that guy" when it comes to flaming products so this time I'm going to see if the community can throw some feedback the developers way!

Quickly bashed up a very rough calculator that takes into account replacing licenses and probably doesn't fit for your environment but gives you an idea of cost non the less.. Final update: The school are happy with the wireless as confirmed via email from head teacher. The provider of the wireless is working w/ Netgear to resolve the issues. So that's me out of the loop

Another update.. STILL no confirmation from the school after 2 "gentle nudge" emails... So we still don't know if the school are happy or not with the current state of the wireless. It's a pretty sorry situation tbh

Some LAs and schools are using 'Log Me In', as far as I understand it Becta required dual form authentication so we have never used 'Log Me In' as it doesn't "tick that box". Anyone using 'Log Me in'? Anyone got any advice on if we should be using it or not to give teachers access to their SIMS data? My instincts tell me that 'Log Me In' is unaccountable for any connectivity therefore it is not ideal as a remote access mechanism into children's/parents etc. personal & private information. Sorry for excessive use of '' - I had to do it to identify that it was a product name and not a description of a service.

Hey all, just a quick update. Requested school emailed me something saying they are willing to close the case. They said they will investigate and get back to me. This was a week ago and I'm still waiting. As I am essentially out of the loop due to the fact the school said they are happy I have asked Network Installs Ltd to read this thread again and to action your requests. Thanks everyone for your hard work and commitment. I know this post may sound a bit "middle managementesque" but it's the best I can do until the school come to a conclusion on if they see the wireless as fit for purpose or not.
