Morning all. I know this isn't strictly AV-related but it's in the context of connecting to a classroom whiteboard. We currently have decent PC's in every classroom but are looking into giving all staff a device as well. It has been muted that will pull out all the PCs and staff roam with their windows laptop. If money constraints weren't an issue (within reason) what do you think is the best approach for technicians/teachers and learners?

I did wonder if there were any useful GPs/scripts anyone had setup to help remedy this. Something along the lines of a countdown timer on logof?

Almost intrigued to talk to them just to see how they back up those figures.

I do few ICT lessons a week with various year groups. I also do games with the same year groups. I really enjoy it and makes it one of the really nice things of working in an education setting. I have to say that also using the IT labs and services with the kids does open you up to seeing some of the pitfalls teachers face and get frustrated with. Had I not been admin and had access to AD etc there would certainly have been times my IT lessons would have either been scuppered or a kid would have been either sat out or sharing becuase something was either wrong or setup incorrectly and I would have needed to then log a call and wait for someone from IT to resolve. It also lets you see the fruits of you labour. Sad as it is I take pleasure in seeing a student seamlessly move from there BYOD device to a school computer and immediately pickup where they left off! Whilst no one else appreciates what went into makeing that happen I know my hours research and config now saves 10 minutes of every lesson that involves a computer and I take pride in that.

Thanks. Sounds like it's something we can work with. Do you do that through SDS/Salamander or some other way? We are an independent school so one of our main differences is keeping parents extra happy.

Thanks Mullet man. Sorry didn't explain myself very well. Does salamander make those those parent mail groups for you? I'm just thinking their is more you could do with parent emails outside of Sims. One thing I thought of is to have any emails from parents tagged with a colour in outlook. Something like that. No idea if that possible.

Thanks for the reply. Have I set this up in a way that is not recommended to have all the exams backing up in the same place? As on the launch menu I can then recover/roll back to someone else's exam within the same share?

Just started using exam writepad. It's brilliant so thanks so much. Has been a real game changer for the way we do things. A couple of questions which I couldn't find the answer to: 1. Is there anyway to bulk print exams. We currently have all our laptops backing up the exams to a hidden share. It would be great to be able to select a bunch of files and then right click print. Am I missing something or is this not possible? 2. With our backup folder on a network share is there some kind of switch or variable we can use to make the backups save to seperate folders within the share. Either folders with usernames or folders with computer name. Thanks in advance

Is there anything else more jazzy we can do with school data sync? 2 things I'm thinking of but not sure if possible: -With salamander creating "guardian of" groups for students. So for example you type in "guardian of Joe blogs" and it sends the email to the relevant parents. -Creating an internal rule so that if a parent email their email is flagged as either important or is given some kind colour filter? Any idea if these are possible?

Sadly I was sat on the sofa this evening and I thought to myself "what MIS do they mainly use in the states" which led me to searching this forum which chucked up a very old and short thread. Now I appreciate that not everyone may want to use edugeek but how come our UK based forum is so big, but generally only has people from UK schools chatting and sharing best practise on it? I know we have a few international Edugeekers on here but are there some massive international hidden forums somewhere that schools Techs from other countries use that us Brits aren't invited to and don't show up in our version of Google? So going back to the original question......what MISs do they use I'm the states?

Hi All Since updating a few iPads to IOS 14 they are no longer able to have apps be pushed to. Everything else seems to be working but no apps pushing? Literally a needle in a haystack here so has anyone got any leads?

Sorry FN-GM. I didn't see your reply. The costs are: 1 The cost of new drives we purchased becuase we needed them that day and I wasnt prepared to use the refurbished drives HP were offering us as a replacement in our production system, given the history of the brand new drives that were in there. 2 The cost of consultancy/engineer who leant a spare San so we could test backups and also helped us failover / failback / wipe old San. All of which I wanted to have someone hold my hand whilst getting back up together with 4 days before the start of term in September.

I hope someone louder than me calls Google up on this. Call me cynical but getting everyone onboard with their photo storage for free, wiping out the competition and then hiking up the price is poor show. It's just not cricket. Hopefully someone should be looking into anti competitive behaviour on this.

Yes definately. I guess you just make sure if/when you do it you get the right permissions / paperwork and properly assess it. Nothing is without risk

How would anyone get to the user profile? It seems a bit obscure to me? Unless they have emailed the person anyone how would anyone ever see the picture? We have a synced for office 365 and find it really helpful. I know exactly who I'm talking to when emailing or chatting on teams and teachers like the easy identity via teams calls etc as well. I did run it past our safeguarding team before hand and we decided the positives outwweigh the small risk. Any student or staff member that doesn't want it on there can request for it to be removed but this is removed out of our respect for their choice and not for any GDPR reason they pull out of the air as we deem the use of the picture important to the effective running of our business.

Very Gucci going for all SSDs! What sort of prices are they coming in at? Do you think all your data deserves to sit on SSDs or could you make do with cacheing and save a heap of money? Word of warning, and this is just me being bitter with burnt fingers. But I would now be cautious of having all drives of the same model in any production SAN without appropriate redundancy. If something is wrong with those drives you may find they all go pop at the same time meaning no RAID is going to help you.

I'm no pro. But would suggest setting them up as a performance tier which then means data is dynamically moved to the SSDs when it's being used and back to midline/storage when it's finished. Kind of like a cacheing drive but the data resides on the SSDs. Out of interest, have you got any kind of redundancy for your SAN. We recently had a major balls up with faulty drives in our SAN. It had never really occured to me before then stupidly that this was a single point of failure despite having a decent cluster.
