yep studywiz in hampshire as well. Only just got it and seems great so far. Has different interfaces for primary and secondary.

I am not sure if this will help you...and to be honest I am not sure how this works but was chatting to another local tech who adviced I try intaliing windows script host 5.6 on the slow workstations. After restarting pcs it probably cut my login times by half. The screen seems to stay on applying settings for slightly longer (but this seems good to me as it stops the kids trying to open things before pc is ready) but pc is ready to use ammediately. It definately had more of an effect on my older kit than newer though. Like I say though I have no idea what it does, just installed it blindly to try it out but might be worth a go. Pottsey - Yep sorry didnt mention that, the pcs will need to be able to be used also. SPC- Just tried this one as well but had same prob, installed worked fine, change settings worked fine when logged in. Then when logged out it defuaslts back to the nuparadighn feed Any ideas?

OK Kokey Hope someone can help with this as would be cool thing to have.... We have 4 new computers for the entrance/library area of our junior school. I am trying to add some sort of rss/newsfeed screensaver to these computers for a cheap alternative to digital signage + it will look cool. Now I know how to change a screensaver to show at login (defualt user etc) but I am struggling getting any rss feeds to work, I am assuming it cannot connect to the net as no proxy info is added. I have tried rsssaver.com - the rss screen saver for windows - this one worked but didnt update to the rss I wanted only the defualt one from the softwares own site Online News Screensaver (RSS, ATOM, RDF, HTML, weather, stock quotes) - rss screensaver description - this one wouldnt show up any of the images or frames and wouldnt connect to any rss unless logged on as user I have also tried adding these screensavers as services with login details but no joy. So im not even sure if this is possible but seems like it should be, security isn really a massive issue being as we are only a junior and the pcs are constantly being supervised. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. It would be a great thing to have as could link up to calenders, news, blogs etc and would add real value to the pcs as info would be always be there. Cheers in advance

thanks for the reply again But what I want is to RESET the SERVER COPY so that all the original settings go back to square one, e.g a new user.Their has to be a simple way of doing this that I am missing.

Sorry yep we have roaming profiles Thing is in the gp the proxy settings are already set, so what to do then? I dont seem to have changed anthing just merely deleted the profile folder so would assume it would make a brand new one with all the original settings still intact? Cheers

cheers for the quick reply, thing is the profiles arent huge only a couple of megs, and we have all the prevous things setup e.g, home folder redirect, cant save to desktop, recyle bin empties itself etc The problem really is that I want to be able to reset students profiles without losing proxy settings, as some of the students have settings e.g mouse cursors which are stuck on silly things like dinosours as I have blocked the ability to be able to change them now. So really I am just after a simple way of deleting a user then adding a user but saving all there files etc, so ideally just a profile reset.

Ok Im probably being special here but any help would be great. Ive read a few bits about cleaning cached profiles from workstations but havent found a cure for this. Basically all the students profiles are of a reasonable size between 2-5mb but the students that have been at school longest tend to get much slower logon times. Now originally when I came to work here not much locking downm was done but I have added to that over time, this means that some children still have different themes / pointers etc but cant change them back becuase I have disbled the ability to change etc. Now I assumed if I went onto the server and deleted the individuals names from the profile folder it would start them a fresh. This has worked and logons are faster but for the accounts I have tested the proxy settings to reach out of school have been lost. If anyone can heklp me with this it would be great as I dont understand why they would lose the internet settings when they are still part of the same ou/groups and would assume it just recreates the profile. Sorry if this has been asked before but I promise I have searched Basically my problem is that when users log on they regularly dont have the desktop shortcuts load. Although after refreshing the desktop all icons show immediately. There seems to be no logic as to when this happens, e.g all workstations, all profiles....just random. The only thing I can notice is that when the icons dont show the profile is usually a tad slower to load. We are using folder redirection for desktop, the workstations are xp and the server is 2k3 using roaming profiles. Cheers in advance for any help

Hi guys Im trying to help someone create a short course for techs in primary schools. Most of the people taking part will be i.t savvy lsa's/ or people with little previous knowledge but have the responsibility of looking after the day to day runnings of a ict within primary's. If you could list a few key things for me that would be great. Im thinking along the lines of Understanding permissions Backup Basic maintenance/troubleshooting of pcs. understanding of how networks are put together any ideas/links would be great

What age group is the school mate? to go along with the pen thing, a diary/notepad is always useful (especially If you have the memory of a fish like me) On your tour of the computer rooms engage with some of the students briefly e.g ask them what they are up to, what programs they are using etc. Was told that was why I got my job as I seemed "approachable". Obvious one but tell them what they want to here, all schools are on a tight budget so anything money saving you can add to the conversation is great. Tell them about something you "ad hocked (bodged)" and worked brilliantly. Another thing that suprises me when I go to different juniors is how many dont have the photocopiers networked and are using expensive printers. Without being cocky advise them on plumbing them in to the network. From what ive seen on this forum you will do great in your interview so don't worry, nerves are the main thing that can hold you back in an interview. Good Luck

just wondering if anyone has used paint.net in junior school? if anyones had a play with it let me no how their kids got on with it and what stuff they created with how much knnowledge? also if they you no any quick wow effects to show the kids share them with me. The reason Im trying something a bit more complex is becuase some of the more computer savy kids are board with the photo/drawing software we have (dazzle, YUCK), and I no If i let them loose on this they will have a field day and probably create something better than I will within a couple lessons of playing. cheers

Ok sorry if ive posted this in the wrong place, or has recently been mentioned but I have scoured the other forums for a few answers. Basically we have a new server coming soon, so Im taking the oppurtunity for a fresh start on all the computers in school. We dont have ghost so its all from scratch. Ideally i would want to use msi s but I no for some stuff, being a small school I may as well manually install. Im currently trying to create a list of free programs to get together for the install, ive asked the staff if there is any freeware they want installing on the staff laptops and if anyone constantly uses any opensource stuff they think maybe usefull. My question is does anyone have a really good list of stuff that must be put onto a fresh install to make life in an everyday school environment more usable. This is the beggining of my list (feel free to shoot me down:) just give me a reaon please) MUSTS: Flash Java quicktime (quictime alternative) realplayer (realplayer alternative) firefox vlc media player vnc (gonna have a go at an openfire server for i.m) audacity Stuff staff have asked for: itunes (yuck but they all want it) hot potatoe google picasso skype that was a quick list, im shore more stuff will pop into my head also Im looking for a free alternative to Dazzle, any photo or painting software for juniors that is better than dazzle (cant be hard). Hi guys Very much need to upgrade the webby for our school. My 1 problem being we need the ths site to be very easily changed by anyone, including non techy staff, the use off ftp is out of the question and I think joomla may also be a bit off a problem for some staff in the future. Im thinking off using http://www.weebly.com to create a super simple site that can be maintained easily while just logging on. What Im asking is if anyone nos of any reason why they may not be a good idea? obvously we wont have all the features of joomla, or a proper html site but I ffel this seems to be the way things are going with our local authority constantly pushing "web 2.0" Any feedback would be greatly appreciated cheers

warranty is an extra 5833 for 3 years, more crazy figures. I assumed the server would come with a spare drive raided for backup? if not then i guess well have to buy a tape drive or something. You were right the edictnet is a user management tool, not sure how good it is, i think its likely some sort of copy of the one that ships with rm servers. Although very tempted to do the job myself i think i probably am a bit too much of a newb, and although asking someone from the local schools to help would be nice, i dont want to have only them as a bakup if things go pear shaped. So guys, Ive emailing RM tomoz, if anyone nos any other good companys that offer decent support then feel free to post them up. Ill get back on here with the qoutes if people are interested? well the reason we only got this qoute so far is because this is who we were advised to use as a "managed" solution to a new server which would could be automated by the local council who supply our tinternet. Although 14k for a bit off an easy life doesnt seem justifiable. If anyone on here works for edict/swan or hampshire or have this system installed i would love to hear your opinions. Seems to me that being overcharged by a group which works for the same people as you is a bit silly, also just found out they we got a qoute a few years back for a seperate server in the office which incorparates 3 pcs and a printer. Guess what 3k installation only. Im really looking forward to the break dowN of the instalation charges they send

Hi guys Im pretty new to working in schools, and i.t to be honest as this is my first job and have only been here a few months. I dont really no the politics of prices charges within education for work undertaken but when i recieved a qoute for 14k my mouth dropped. Being a savvy person ive asked for a more detailed breakdown of the qoute and instalation. What do you guys think of this price? what would you expect to pay? We have been basically looking for a new server to upgrade our our old nt system. All the cableing is there, we need no software (except server 2003), the main reason to upgrade truly is because we constantly run out of space on the nt system (obvously i could pop another hard drive in but were after a longer term solution). The nt system seems to serve us well considering its age and specs so a flash server is not really needed. We have 31 pcs around the school (all cabled in) and around 15 laptops linked via 5 access points. 3 networked printers. we asked for a qoute from our council (hampshire)who run edict and swan, which supplies us with our internet, as it seems alote easier to go through them as they supply us with everything else. this is a basic breakdown of the qoute (figures are rounded) sc1430 school server = £1670 server 2003 = 70 ordering and handling = 200 project management = 950 instalation = 8000!!!!!! training 370 edictnet product fee = 300 varous other smaller bits which we asked for that make up the rest but are quite insignificant now correct me if im wrong but when they install the server they will unplug the old one, plug in the new one, setup the printers etc, fiddle with some domain settings + migrate our nt users etc. Maybe have to logon to each computer at most and install some network monitoring tools or something. This to me seems like a days work for someone with experience. could someone please put me in my place and tell me that im wrong and this is long job,because as of this moment im currently thinking of building the blinkin thing myself and saving a hell of a lot of money. another quick question......2674 for office 2003 on 53 pcs? sound correct? cheers for any help or information guys, any suggestions comments would be greatly appreciated (p.s i assume this is in the correct forum, if not sorry and feel free to move it)
