4 x belkin extension leads with cover thingys £100 1 x surge protected extension lead £5 50 x cable clips £3 10 x studs for extra shelves £3 1 x rcd £10 1 x Padlock + shackle for front £5 I got the extra shelves for free in the end so not sure what the timber would have cost. Took about half day of actual work to complete and tidy as well so I reckon £125 + my time all in. Think it suits our need better than a trolley as well. Maxes out at 7 amps when they are all charging. Cheers for the info......not sure if to leave it in the socket or not now? might take another look at the board. Would love to take a basic sparkys course one day.........

reason I did it was because the box that those wall sockets are attached to have a 20a rcd so thought I would just bring it down a little bit to 13a, also if it did trip it wouldnt trip the other stuff in the ict suite (which I have infact unplugged from the relevant sockets for the time being). and on to a few cliches.....you can never be to careful + safety never sleeps. Did that make sense?

Current server setup is very similar to the one I posted quad core xeon 3ghz, 4gb ram, 2003 r2, 2x140gb mirrored sata drives. I have recently moved over to mandatory profiles for students and have noticed a massive boost. We used to get a huge slow down when a class would login but that has almost gone. To be honest our current situation is now acceptable it was just I thought I may be able to put this server to good use as our DC has to play every role. My Original thought was to put ubuntu on it (as I have a little bit of experience with it) create some shares, then point to the ubuntu server from the DC inside the dfs settings? Or have I gone around this completely the wrong way? Will I be able to make ubuntu work properly with AD regarding permissions on shares etc? Maybe I should just go with the approach..if it aint broke dont fix it?

I have very kindly been donated a server from a friends business 4gb ram 2x73gb scsi 2x170gb sata and a 3ghz dualcore. Now I know this isnt super fast but assume that somehwere it can help with taking a bit of load from my DC? Maybe use as fileserver? Just somewhere to keep profiles? Im not really looking to expand capabilities i.e nagios cacti server etc, im looking to share out/speed up my dc server responsibilities. Anyone got any ideas? Any linux distros that can do a few things for me? Thanks in advance

Cheers Chazzy something I have been meaning to do for ages and finally did it today. Cant believe how much quicker it is massive improvement. Next question is do you think if I installed an ssd on the server and popped the mandatory profile on that it would also take a bit of slack of the drives in the server at moment? Or would I be better off putting the profiles on our nas device? Also what do I need to do to find out if I need something extra to install an extra cpu, I definately have a spare socket in there for it. Also is there anything better than taskmanager to see whats slowing me dan I.E anything that analyses HD usage etc as well, so I can get a real feel for where we are slowing down. Lastly would it make any difference if I purchased as fast drive to use a s a pagefile being as I am maxed out on 4gb of ram.

Yes we are on roaming profiles. Sounds sensible, how would you suggest to "optimise" though? Do you think storing the profiles on a different machine would help?

Thanks Matt. Defrag every week to try and keep on top. Have checked antivirus so might do that. Only thing I have installed is dropbox so may take that off see if it helps. Rebooted recently and probably do 1/2 times a month in the evening as well. The server only really starts creaking when lots of poeple are logging in.

Wasn't sure if this should be in hardware or server 2003 forum so apologies if its wrong. We currently have a dell poweredge sc1430 which is our dc/file server/printer/ basically everything. We have about 100 clients around school and our server is starting to feel the strain when whole classes log in. The server has 4gb ram (maxed out), 2 7200rpm drives in raid 1, a single quad core xeon processor. We have a gigabit backbone with 100mb to clients so there are no bottlenecks with the actual network but when large groups log in it can become very slow and opening files anywhere around the school becomes very slow for a couple of minutes. Now we dont have enough money for a new server but was wondering what the most efficient way would be to either boost the server or share its responsibilities.Now i dont know if any of these ideas will help so feel free to shoot me down but this is my list of maybes for a few hundred quid. What do you think would be most effective if even possible? -purchase another matched processer for the server so it has two? -purchase an ssd to store users profiles on and install in server? -get 2 more standard hard drives and make a raid 0+1 (i have no idea how to do this) -purchase a nas drive to store users profiles on? -purchase a nas drive to and move all users docs and dfs to nas? -setup an old machine to use for things like print server? -install ssd as pagefile on server (thought might help as I cant add more ram) In honesty when working on the server for the pasts few months it doesnt feel as snappy, menus have a bit of lag on them generally just doing just working on the machine feels slow, should I be looking at cleaning the machine up? If so how? Roll back? Uninstall old junk? I really dont know where to start Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hi Butuz hope you can help with some figures I have put together. I have tested usage when just charging and also powered on. These are my figures. 25watt(when powered on)/20watt(when charging) 0.18amp 49.9hz 0.63pf 36va Im not sure what all the figures mean but though it best to put them all down. Thanks in advance

Starting to think this may be too big a job. I can sort cooling Ok with a few fans but unless I can buy something commercial that I can plug the charger into I think I might be looking at just purchasing a trolley annoyingly. Someone somewhere must have had a go at this? Or does everyone just use trolleys?

If it was my home I would give these a bash at wiring but for obvious reasons dont think I will take that chance. Anyone know of a commercial power supply that might output to figure of eight type leads?

Can you purchase these sorts of power supply on there own?

Im testing my chippie skills here but need a bit of help with charging scenario. I have a nice big secure wooden cupboard in the ict suite which is set to be made into somewhere to store and charge 40 netbooks. Now I can easily build all the shelves and make cables nice and tidy but I am unsure about safe charging? There are 2 mains sockets situated just outside the cupboard which I have cut holes to but am unsure about rigging up extension leads preoperly. How could I do this safely (if at all). I was thinking of 2 rcds connected to 2 surge protected extension leads then leading to 5 of these: Belkin Surge Concealed 8 Way Sure Protector - Misco.co.uk Im not sure how the setup works in a proper charging trolley? If anyone has any opinion or ideas that would be great. I will take some pictures of my project for those interested. Thanks in advance

Hi all just wondering if anyone has come across this problem? When installing activinspire over my network with the msi, I get the problem that unless the old activprimary is uninstalled first I get an error massage when I look in the event viewer stating "product activinspire v1 --error 1327.invalid drive h:/" This doesnt seem to happen after I uninstall the old version. I use a winter wetsuit here in the UK 5/3mm does me most of the year round although we never go below 10m as our equipment is a bit "ghetto". In the uk we go under swanage pier and also around durdledoor on the south coast. Both nice easy dives. I finished by padi in kao tao by coincidence...think the dive school was called big bubble on the south of the island. Started to do my advanced but never finished it. Is worth doing though as it means you can do night dives and go deeper (although to be honest I prefer to be shallow as you get a longer dive). I would recomend doing a proper course to anyone despite being expensive...gives you alot more confidence especially when you turn up to some shack in asia somewhere who are the only dive company about. At least you know what to look out for!

Look Really good what did you build it in? 2 things, when clicking on sports and leisure section the shortcuts at the top are not available, also on the front page everything looks really nice except I am drawn to the bullying bit. Kinda looks out of place. Cant put my finger on it though.

Hi all. Im currently making a new homepage for staff/children. Rather than just have text hyperlinks to websites I was hoping to use pictures of the website name e.g a wikipedia button. Does anyone know of place where I can find these sorts of buttons already made. Or have a stack premade. I can make a few for the more obscure websites but thought there must be some out there already. Also any tips on a good homepage. Had planned to have google calendar linked to out website + twitter feed. Then all the links to maybe the top ten used websites, with just a basic google search at the top. All oppinions welcome
