  1. The poop back and forth bit is from a film called "you me and everyone i know". One of the funniest scenes ever! This is the symbol ))><(( Look it up on youtube
  2. Also blocked in Hampshire
  3. Rather than extended your desktop onto the second monitor you could stretch it instead. I can do it through the ati catalyst control thingy. Has its disadvantages though as things dont automatically resize to fit one screen.
  4. Thanks Tricky Have done that now but with no passwords (as i obvously dont know ad passwords) Do you think that is safe enough for a share? Its been hidden from normal access, and only shows up through dfs if you have logged into the domain. Then access to that folder is purely through usernames.
  5. Hi Folks Have just bought a netgear readynas RND-2150 to use as a second backup and also to store media files e.g video/music/photos so that I can free up a bit of space on our DC. Stupidly I didnt read all the features so this model doesnt have AD intergration. I would rather not replace the item as money is tight, so is there any way in making the device secure so that not any old tom/dick/harry can plug into network and access files? I know the device has built software to add users but this would take forever to add all staff members, and I dont really want them to be prompted to give username/password etc. I know I am probably asking a bit much but just thought someone might have a clever solution. Before anyone suggests I cant lock down network switches to disable randoms plugin in. Thanks in advance.
  6. Thanks Chillibear. Sounds all a bit to much for my home setup. All I really wanted to achieve was to be able to watch films, play a few games on my telly plugged into my dual screen setup. Something that usually shouldnt be to complicated but it seems as soon as you have dual screens and svideo output to an older style telly things start to get a bit dodgy. Thanks for your time anyway but may have to look for another solution.
  7. Thanks, I did do this though and with the information I got from it I searched my usual suppliers for the best price and came back with the links in my prevous post. The problem was that the supplier then came back to me to say the item I had picked was incompatible with my system which then confused me.
  8. Hi all This is actually a question about my home computer but thought it would be useful for someone else so I hope I posted in correct forum. Basically I have an pcie ATI 4650 (sorry cant remember exact model) which has two monitors attached via dvi. I also have an old telly attached which I want to get hooked up to it but my output is svideo and my tv only has rca/scart connections. Now I have tried varous adapters but none have given decent results and some just dont work alltogether. So I was thinking of adding an old pci card with dedicated rca/composite output and using that to clone one of the displays. Now my first question is if this is possible? My second question is will the pci card do all the work to put the picture on my telly or will it share it with my better card so its power isnt waisted? Third question, is this actually worth doing or will I cause myself a big headache, are there any better ways to do this? Thanks in advance
  9. Hi Folks Hoping you can clear something up for me as I dont want to mess up an order and I know someone can answer this really quickly. We have a dell poweredge sc1430. It currently does everything in our school, its dc, sims server, file server, print server etc. It currently has only 2gb of ram which Im looking to upgrade. Now I went onto the crucial website and got back that it needed 240pin ddr2 pc2 5200. So I went onto misco and had a look and came up with this: Kingston Dell Equivalent 1Gb PC5300 DDR2 DDR - Misco.co.uk I sent them a message to check it was compatible and they got back to me to say that it wasnt becuase I needed to buy a pair.....now this was fine as i wanted 2 anyway but they said I needed this: KINGSTON Memory/2GB Kit of 2pcs Dell PowerEdge 195 - Misco.co.uk Now usually I would risk it for a biscuit but being as its our main dc etc I wanted to run it by some others. Any help would be massively appreciated. On a seperate note about the same server, it has a free slot for another cpu. Now does anyone know if I need to match the current cpu or can I just chuck in a cpu with the correct socket. Is there anything extra I need to know about having more than 1 physical cpu before I give it a go. Again thanks

    District 9

Good film but nothing to wet your pants about. I think if you didnt get the metaphor of aliens being second class, especially when based in post apartied africa then you dont deserve to even be in a "less intelligient" category. My problem was actually with the fact they had done something slightly clever but glitzed over it with a bit to much action to get the crowds in. The other bit that annoyed was the fact that the main chap was almost made out to be a martyr by helping the main alien, when infact if he hadnt faffed about near the end and *spoiler* and nocked him out when he was going under his hut *spoiler over* then everything would have been rosie in the first place and would wouldnt have been put through the robocop scene. Think definatly a sequal is on the way...... Good but could do better.... a 7.2 from me
  11. Rather than use i.ps which change, use the computer name instead. Makes life a bit more easy.
  12. Now I know I should probably be able to figure this out but I dont want to waste my beer tokens on an expensive drive if I am not gonna see a performance boost. Basically girlfriends photoshop rig is xp 4gb 8400gt Ath 64 x2 4800 2x7200rpm drives (1st drive with os partition, and documents) (2nd drive scratch file/page file and backup) Basically drive number one has gone kaput! and I want to replace it. I can only afford about 60 quid so a massive raptor is out of the question. But if I buy one of the 74gb versions and move all documents onto the backup drive (I can backup elsewhere) will I still see a speed benefit having the working documents stored on the slow drive? and also having the page file/scratch file on the slow drive? Also I know these is a bit of an open question as it depends on the person but.......I know these drives are a bit louder than, but would they be bearable in a front room when idleing as I dont want some helicopter noises coming from the corner of the room. The other thing Im hoping for help with is a gpu upgrade.....But being the fussy git I am I want one thats 1.Compatable with photoshops new gpu settings 2. either doesnt have a fan is is really quite as again I hate helicopter noises. Cheers in advance for any info people
  13. Weve had the luvly Georgie Palmer, celebrity weather lady. She was really nice, and the kids loved it. Plus countless saints footballers, and under 21s england coach and a couple of players.
  14. We got these ones from RM. RM.com Shop: RM Multicoloured Lowercase Keyboard - USB Are everything you asked and reasonable price
  15. Could anyone clear it up for me.....as a mere tech we we fall under key workers?
  16. Would pat testing all my equipment help or would this be a waste of time, as Im not exactly sure what the a PAT tester tests for?
  17. Cheers for that....problem is I dont think GF will be happy to have an extra bit of kit under the telly. So an all in one is really what im after just for aesthetics. Thats interesting about contesting the 54 though as Im sure a saleman was trying to tell me the other day that upradeing to n would increase our wireless speeds even for older clients!
  18. Cheers everyone for the helpful comments so good points to take home. Couple of bits I want to clarify. So when trying to find the fault I can only really do 1 at a time as turning off a whole bank makes the test a bit biased. I thought this in my head but wasnt sure if I was just making it up as when trying the method below never had a trip! Im not sure if this method will properly work as stated above. If anyone could give a definate answer it would be helpful just to clear things up in my head. I think this is the route we will take when I get some more money to play with. Add an RCB for each row rather than the lot. Just out of interest is this a quick job for a spark it would it take some time, I know the rcbs themseleves are a few quid each. Yep sorry its the rcb not any of the mcbs they stay where they are. I have now turned the function on all the bios's to save me some time.....theres something about flicking a switch which turns on multiple appliances which I just dont like though..... Thats a spot on idea will fish out the one old ups we have and give it a bash to see what happens. This is definately not the case...although of topic but upstairs in 1 of our classroms the people that installed 1 of the projectors/audio managed to install the switch for it in the classroom next door
  19. Ive done the usual searching but my google-fu must be pretty low at the moment. Can anyone reccomend me a decent router for home with the above features + maybe some other bits like QOS etc that doesnt cost the earth and actually works without have to constantly reset the thing. Cheap as possible but willing to splash out is something is the dogs.. Also if someone could clarify for me... if I had a wireless n router which could work around 200mbps and say 3 wireless laptops which were 802.1 g would this mean they could all connect at there potential maximum of 54mbps or would they still have to contest 54 mbps between them? Cheers in advance Rich
  20. If you use WOL its probably not helping that all computers are going on at the same time. You could try staggering them like 8 at a time or something. Funny thing is has never tripped when waking all the computers at once. Marc's Technical Pages: Power Quality Symptoms and Solutions - Leakage Current in Technology bit of nice reading. Are the monitors switched off at night? A light bit of reading...think I got the jist of it. I have tried turning monitors off (at button not power switch) but doesnt seem to make much difference. I take it its better to have them off then? Is it individual rows that trip? and is it the same rows that trip each time? Well the there is only 1 rcd so whatever trips take the lot with it. So what I do is turn all rings off, then rcd on, then one at a time switch the individual rings back on. I guess in an ideal world each ring would have its own rcd? Last time i had a classroom that kept tripping, it turned out to be a dodgy monitor! I only worked it out when the monitor finally cooked itself, was replaced and it never happened again..... Any way of diagnosing this before it frys you think? Cheers for all the help.....off topic and sure its asy but how do you qoute more than one person at a time? Thanks Rich
  21. 5/6 depending on row. Cheers for quick reply
  22. Hope someone can help with this as its driving me mad. Most mornings when I come in the power in our ict suite has tripped, which means I have to manually turn pcs on (instead of wol) which isnt to bad..but on mornings when Im not there I dont like the idea of other people having too turn the power back on via the switch box as if all the switches are turned on too quickly the power in the main switch cupboard will also trip. Now a little background, Spiradically some of the psu have been dyeing in the suite, Im not sure if this is the cause or the effect of the constant tripping either way I know some of the psu's are on there way out although I have replaced 3/4 of them now. Is there going to be a simple way to diagnose where the fault is coming from, and what time maybe the power has tripped to see if that has any relation. The strange thing is the power trips more in the night (when no pcs are switched on) than in the day when they are all on. The rccb says 80a 30ma on. And we have 34 pcs and monitors running from it. Our sparky (who I trust) has told us the fualt isnt with the switch but some of the units we are using, but is proving a mistery to me which ones are causing the fault. If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating! Heres a picture of the switch box if it helps anyone, each of the switches represents a row of pcs then the one that says pr1 is the projector. http://www.orchard-jun.hants.sch.uk/IMG_0948.jpg
  23. Could you not take a drill to the old one and resit the holes to a new location? Find correct size screws and washers and away you go? Saves money and lets you get your hands dirty.
  24. Why dont you use a web based alternative TVCatchup - Never Miss A Show Again lets you watch live tv from all the major freeview channels and is legal as long as you have a tv licence etc although Im not completely sure of the rules on that one. Really good site though and have very few probs with it.
  25. cheers spc This is gonna sound stupid but....how do I do this. Surely I need to change the settings for the defualt user if I want the screensaver before login but this doesnt seem to work.
