We've done similar schemes with parental contributions via Fully flexible finance solutions from Syscap

I got the quotes together and managed the company who installed it. I've shown various members of key staff how to use the system and view the footage if required, I do it occasionally also.

Cacti or Nagios (quick google search or browse on here) will give you the option to monitor bandwidth on your network, not sure if Spiceworks offers this feature. A little setting up will be required to get either of the above working as they wont just work out of the box.

I was at a recent CAPITA Partnership School event and the changes to the parents webparts do look much better, we use SLG well at our school although the use of Sharepoint is the fiddly bit. The webparts currently are not particuarly that nice to look at but the data that it needs to produce ticks the boxes. The product will evolve, and for those schools considering SLG or moving away may decide the new features offer them something more.

We also have a hosted wiki that information is kept on, but have been tempted to look at migrating to Evernote, but not sure if I would advise storing personal info / password details etc.

If you have access to iPADs theres a lot of circuit simulation apps

Since our teaching staff got Laptops from the Laptops for Teachers scheme we haven't replaced any due to damage, age etc. Staff were made aware right at the start that the laptop they were provided would more than likely be the first and last. Other than replacing Power cables, we have stuck to this rule for all staff.

[sims] What is the best way to make parent SLG accounts?
Sylv3r replied to nLinked's topic in MIS Systems
Theres mailmerged letters you can run via reports to pull of a list of parents, students, usernames and passwords. This works well for us. -
Out of the two you mentioned and I much prefer Fusion, it seems much quicker and provides a few extra options.

Another vote for SOLUS 3.0. Setup and working without any issues here too.

Cheers - I'll pass it on to the Maths department.

hmmm off the top of my head, making the folder read only does that work? I installed this a while ago and it plays nicely on our Windows 7 network running from a shared network drive but can't for the life of me think I did anything special to get it working.

We've used them once for an AV install - no complaints.

Classroom Observation | Lesson Observation | Teacher Professional Development - IRIS Connect We've just loaned one for the minute from a neighbouring organisation, not sure of the cost but I believe its quite pricey.

We very rarely if ever watch live TV here but for the sake of a price of a TV licence it was felt just to buy one anyway just to cover us for those 'what if' moments.

On the topic of books, this looks good and reasonably priced.... probably not for the RM haters! https://www.rmbookshelf.com

See my link here, we are also a happy school with SLG: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/103969-does-sims-have-web-portal-2.html#post892195 Some people like it and others don't - its all about opinions. I think i've got a what is SLG doc, if I can dig it out, i'll upload it here.

I sold my previus model macbook air before I bought the new one and thought I got a decent deal on it, but by the time eBay and Paypal took their cut I couldn't believe it - it was nearly £80 in total.

My gut feeling is that the surface isn't here to stay - it's Microsoft's way of a proof of concept to show other manufacturers that Windows 8 works on a tablet. I don't think we will see as many versions as devices such as iPADs certainly.

All our licences remained apart from CAPITA as mentioned above, we did write to those computers who we purchase a subscription / support from just to inform them of our change of name, none of them got back to say we owed any more due to the transfer to academy status. We took the liberty when we were repurchasing our SIMS licences to move to SAGE 200 instead of FMS as we felt it just offered us that little bit more with regards to reporting etc.

[sims] Nova T6 and timetabling. Who does yours?
Sylv3r replied to speckytecky's topic in MIS Systems
We gave one of our Maths teachers a TLR to carry out the task of our timetabler after our last one retired. This person is line managed by the assistant head responsible for curriculum. I will support them with any issues / error messages etc, but day to day creation of the timetable is as said. -
We are another happy SLG school here and have been for 3 or 4 years. I have seen the TASC software and also like that too though. We've got all parents for our 1,500 students accessing their Son / Daughters details from work home without any problems and have had some great feedback from parents. Our staff also did not have access to the SIMS client from their workstations until this September and have carried out attendance, tracking, behaviour and profiles student reports via the webparts. The reason we also gave them access to the SIMS client also is that SLG does lack some of the functionality such as being able to generate class set photos / exporting tracking sheets into excel, but I am sure this functionality will come. A lot of people don't like sharepoint - I wonder if this is where the hatred of SLG comes from as the webparts do work well - I agree sharepoint is clunky and ugly looking if not managed and skinned properly - this is what we've done and are very happy with it and our sharepoint install with web parts is our school VLE - providing online access to students to the lesson resources and multimedia via document libraries.

Sounds like something I could come across for. Thanks.

Built-in zip extraction doesn't extract all files.
Sylv3r replied to j_the_geek's topic in Windows 7
We have the same issue and I believe its a known fault. I tend to open the .zip, right click copy, then paste into the location I want it to go in and it tends to work as a workaround. Whether your staff or students could cope with it is another thing.- 3 replies
