[sims] SIMS.net + Office 2013 x64 ? Supported?
Sylv3r replied to Paid_Peanuts's topic in MIS Systems
Im currently running the Spring 2013 release on my Machine with Office 2013 32bit with no issues. It's not officially supported currently, but you shouldn't have any major issues if you choose to use it now. -
We love our Kayako Helpdesk and have done for the last 7 or 8 years.

I wouldn't class it as difficult, but if you were to set it up yourself it's going to take quite a bit of tweaking to get it working exactly how you want. I guess at least if you pay the £600 to Smoothwall you let them know your requirements and they will set up the system exactly how it needs to be. As the system does so much, documenting it fully would be an absolute nightmare. I guess you could always give it a go yourself and if you can't set it up then you have the option to pay the £600.

We've used it for a number of years and I picked up most things using the documentation on supportnet.

[sims] [SOLUS3] - Capitas guidance for migrating SOLUS3 to a new server incorrect!
Sylv3r replied to Rawns's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks for the heads up, I was looking to migrate over the next month or so so I better make sure I have the most up-to-date documentation. -
We use it and it works well and is quite effective. The occasional spam does get through but it is probably the same for all products and I guess we could up the rating but I don't want it to be too harsh. Each morning, each user gets a Spam Quarantine digest of any mail that was stopped the previous day. This gives them the opportunity to preview the message and release if genuine. I must admit though, we check the spam queue a couple of times a day just incase something should have got through but is stuck. More often than not, when the public e-mail in completed application forms the odd one or two gets stuck for example.

We spent an afternoon coming up with naughty words to add to our Impero - we come up with some good 'uns )

We are an academy using Sage and Lloyds. Finance girls seem to think everything works well and Lloyds are pretty helpful and quick to turn things around when requested.

Director of IT positions.........are they out there?
Sylv3r replied to Kyle's topic in Educational IT Jobs
My title was changed to Director of ICT as part of the recent Job Evaluation exercise in our LA. The job spec, pretty much matched what I was doing as a Network Manager beforehand anyway. -
We also field trialled it. No issues from us in the one suite we tested it on.

Migration went smoothly and only required one click to upgrade! Thanks for your help guys!

Capita are looking to release a product that will do this and integrate with SIMS - it's called Swordfish - I can't remember off the top of my head the costs, but it did look OK.

I am guessing they are now starting to force peoples hands. We were hoping to migrate fully in the summer but this looks unlikely to be the case now. --------- You have 14 days left to start the upgrade to Office 365 for education! Just a reminder that ******.co.uk (and any accepted domains) is scheduled to upgrade from Live@edu to Office 365 for education in 14 days. You can start the upgrade any time before 17 April 2013 UTC. Read the before-upgrade checklist, then sign in to the Service Management Portal (SMP) to get started. Remember, users will have access to their email throughout the upgrade process. Please note that it is no longer possible to postpone the scheduled upgrade date.

We have just received our e-mail this morning to say we will move across to the Office 365 platform in 14 days. Currently we use SSO with our Live@Edu setup and we are aware that SSO no longer works with Office365 without using ADFS. If we were to upgrade our accounts now and choose not to use ADFS, will our old Live@Edu accounts still work now with their current password from our AD, our will users not be able to login as it checks AD each time a logon is requested? I would be happy if this was the case and just reset the user passwords on an adhoc basis in the interim. Longer term, we will probably go down the RM Unify product for Single Sign on, but this was probably a planned summer holidays job. If someone can provide us with some options and thoughts as of what to do, that would be appreciated. Thanks Andrew

Your going to struggle, unless you create some sort of VM with Windows or Windows on a bootcamp install or via remote desktop if you have that in your school. It's not designed to run on MAC's.

No issues when i've bought compatibles in the past. If theres only £10 difference or so I go for the genuine product, but for £70 it's a no brainer - compatibles all the way.

EduGeek EDIT Conf 2013 - A Heads-up
Sylv3r replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
I'll be on my jollies on the west coast of america, so won't be able to attend this year but it sounds a great night which will fit with everyones plans. -
It works well to a degree, not perfect but they appear to be building on it and adding new features all of the time. Certainly can't grumble for what effectively makes our lives easier for no cost.
-
As a side note - where will you be syncing your dropbox data - I don't think it plays nicely with mapped drives - or it certainly didn't use too.

[sims] Making your own Data Collection Sheets in SIMS
Sylv3r replied to Stuart_C's topic in MIS Systems
I may be a little misunderstood, but you mentioned webparts. If you have SIMS Learning Gateway there is now a webpart that parents can complete or update their data online and it feeds back into SIMS after it has been moderated by a member of staff in school. -
If your already a Schoolcomms customer they too now have a parent payment module as part of their system - it may be worth you investigating that.

Our Mobotix IP cameras are pretty good.

School Staff Timetabling Software - any recommendations?
Sylv3r replied to soveryapt's topic in How do you do....it?
We use Nova on SIMS but have used that Keith Johnson Timetabler program and still use the Options software he has created for various tasks in the school.
