I have created a mail flow rule on appending the disclaimer using active directory tags on one of the schools I manage and they are happy with it and it’s limitations... The limitations are The signature ends up at the end of the email conversation not the email your sending. So it is good for new emails outbound but rubbish for replies in conversations. How ms haven’t put something in place like this I really don’t know. It doesn’t replace a signature if one already exists it just appends another to it. You can I believe Powershell away everyones signature though

I have a problem with excel, when you open an excel file it opens excel application but not the file. If you click file open and select the same file it would then open fine If you open excel and drag the file in it opens fine. You google the problem you get a lot of View unhide disable ignore DDE Disable hardware acceleration Repair office Reinstall office There was a reg hack in the hkey class root changing part of a string /dde to %1 that I tried but this also didn’t work The problem happens on all users, domain admins included None of these have worked and it’s frustrating me Any words of wisdom. I too seen this is common in netgears but seen them on hp and other manufacturers Think the issue is mainly the configuration and stability of the electric supply more than the manufacturer design I suspect the switches have built in circuit breakers for the purpose of protecting the switches from serious damage.

Sorry this is gonna sound like a rant but I would refuse to do this on principal. This isn’t an ICT issue this is a management issue using ICT as a method to fix something this SLT member should be enforcing. Demonstrate a scenario where the teacher leaves in a hurry leaving themselves logged in and the slt member can play little bobby who now has access to any amount of confidential data about other students etc etc. Little bobby can also delete the whole staff and student shares Little bobby can then read years worth of emails with confidential info Little bobby passes his course with all a* Have I missed anything that little bobby could do. As much as I hate this idea also it better than compromising data and security. As a compromise I would as suggested maybe include the reminders in the design of your wallpaper.

I have always had good experiences with Vericool, used them at a school I worked at for years and know they still use them today. Now working with multiple schools I have come across a number of competitors and can say hands down Vericool in my opinion are the best. Always had great support by comparison and the the whole system worked flawlessly. The setup they had were a single VM with sufficient resources allocated, that Vericool had access to for support purposes, 5 Epos tills with finger scanners and manual lookup authentication, 1 cash reval also with finger scanner only. I assume other authentication option would be available side by side but the school only opted for biometric was enough. I do recommend definitely having two reval. We found on the rare occasion when the machine did breakdown this caused problems but that was a financial decision which I could not get them to budge on. Linked in with parent pay, very rare we had sync issues but when we did support were very good resolving the issue in a timely manner. We also had 3 assigned admin computers that all had biometric scanners and camera to deal with enrolment and one admin computer for the canteen manager to configure the till interface as she pleases Integrated in to sims and does pull the photos from sims to display on the tills. The only caveat to be mindful of in My experience with biometric (so nothing against Vericool) and students is you have to regularly keep refreshing the fingertips of all the students on an annual basis. I found over time the hit rate of biometric became less and less as time between refreshes got longer. I amounted this to the changes of the finger. kids they draw on their hands, they get cuts on them etc and found the canteen staff as time went on losing faith in the biometric and manually looking the student up which impacted on queue times. I proposed refreshes of all 1500 students on an annual basis and that seemed to work well and with encouraging canteen staff to advise the student who fingerprint didn’t work to go to admin office to have it refreshed at the time... but as times got tougher and more work was done by less people the workload of both admin and canteen staff meant that not every year the fingertips were refreshed and student weren’t advised to get them refreshed when they failed. Fingertip are great when they are managed properly but become a waste of time if they are not managed properly. Hope this helps

You reminded me of a school I worked for who built a new sixth form building and completely overlooked the ICT side of it. They spent their whole budget building and kitting with furniture but failed to budget networking infrastructure, switching, Classroom cabling, and all other ICT related equipment. No consultation with myself my ICT colleagues or anyone with any ICT knowledge it seems. When I got wind of it in the early days I was told the ICT side was included in the building tender and that we were going to recycle old hardware in to the new build. Despite my objection they still proceeded with their plans 2 weeks before the building was due to open (already 8months overdue and after their public announcement of their grand opening) to the sixth form they delivered the bomb shell that they have not got any equipment to recycle and the cabling, projector computers etc hadn’t been done by the contractors (and wasn’t included). It was literally 12 rooms built like offices rather than classrooms. They removed the comms room from the plans to make more social space but left the switching cabinet in the middle of the social room with what networking cabling that had been done going back to this point. The builders had also thrown hardcore rubble in to the Trench dug for the fibre on top of the fibre uplink that was in flexible tubing. It was absolute hell on earth. I think back and I laugh but then all I remember we arguing with management, if they had at least consulted with us from the beginning none of this would be happening. I worked day and night for 2 weeks with colleagues cabling, kitting classrooms out with usual classroom setup and wireless so they could open on time. It cost the school a small fortune to correct the mistakes made.

It’s understandable... having worked in education for 17 years cabling infrastructure was a lot more expensive back then so room cabs were daisy changed off edge switch as the thought of 1 or 2 cat 6 lines with switching was significantly cheaper than throwing in x number of cat5e lines over a greater distance from the closest edge switch cab to the device location. Because these rooms were also classroom space was significant factor so the smallest cab would be used in a corner of a room somewhere I tried to phase them out over the last decade but as budgets and investment in ICT have become less and less it has become an impossible task to consolidate room switches back to their edge switch. Unfortunately I can’t see any other way of resolving your problem other than my suggestion and feel your pain. Maybe someone else may be able to chime in on other options but my suggestion would be the way I would go about the problem. If I could have my time again and change what I did in my earlier years it would be to put more pressure on my senior management to address concerns before they become an issue as from my learning curve, they don’t give 2 sh*** about it unless it becomes a problem. And even then it’s not their problem it becomes yours. I wish you the best of luck

Can you not squeeze one in at the back of the cab in the gaps where you would likely have patch panel maybe rested on top of a switch . In the cabs that I had no room in i rested a 1u ups in the base of the cab without the wings. Or Put a small desktop ups on top of a switch behind patch panels. Is in the ceiling space an option? I understand you are likely on minimal if not a zero budget but Personally I would see the installation of a ups on switch cabs a necessity so I would be asking for a budget to have the cabs replaced if they are full. Unfortunately it take a £2000 switch to die before budget holders agree to changes like this which would save them thousands in the long run

Unfortunately this is common with switches and power related incidents. I have always used ups or at least a surge protector as a sacrificial appliance and first line defence to the switch, servers and even computers like Epos, BMS’s etc A ups with surge protection factors is your best protection from power related incidents. Generally it’s not the powercut that causes the damage it is return of the supply which spikes. This seems to trigger a lockout on some devices like switches and computers bit like a circuit breaker which is why intervention is required requires to power on properly. It’s only going to be a matter of time before a power outage permanently damages your switches. Switches don’t pull a huge load so a small 500va ups with surge protection would do so. Even this rated ups you would find the ups battery would happily supply most short term power outages. You can get surge protectors which are cheaper but personally would spend that little bit extra to have the ups. Some come in really small packages so if you can fit one somewhere in your cab it will be beneficial. One thing to note whilst you have protected your switches but the threat are still there but instead of your £2000 switch being hit your up to couple £100 ups is being hit instead. I used to self test the batteries periodically to make sure damage hadn’t been caused.

Mailmerge You have the data is already in a spreadsheet. Just link it to a word document. Put your variable tags in to the document, format it as you desire. Finish mailmerge choosing the option to email. Reference the column where all email addresses are. You will need outlook client managing your emails for this to work

Iv support 3 schools who all have fms and I only know of one that has local admin privilege for unrelated purposes. In the many years of supporting schools with fms I can say have had had very little to do with fms. The only issues I ever came across were default printing issues. Needing read write permission to Write to pdoxusrs file when creating a report. General borland database issues. Never had any user operational issues that I can remember. If you wanted to (even if it’s just temporary) why not rdp on to her workstation and assign her username local admin. This can also be achieved through group policy and could already be configured as security group which she may just need adding to. Save yourself the heart ache

Solus 3 updates are managed by the support company sounds like in your case the lea. If they paid them then they should be receiving updates to their solus 3. I would contact lea or capita to determine the support and thereafter if they have a valid license and support release the updates.

Not sure if this will work as I too know how much of a snow flake fms is. You’d think the finance sector would enter the 21st century. It’s amazing how finance departments in schools still use fax... Have you tried changing the printers in the print setup in I think the file menu? There are 5 or 6 tabs where can set the printer away from system default. You may be able to set the redirected printer. Edit - evidently repeated the post above sorry

Good Afternoon I have an annoying issue where are smoothwall is setup to block blogs under "core block rule" which blocks top level Wordpress.com (no problem) and then have an overriding webfiltering rule called "Wordpress Subsites - Approved" that allows subsites of subsite.wordpress.com through (no problem). This all works fine my problem is that when the user wants to login to their wordpress site subsite.wordpress.com/admin the site redirects to https://wordpress.com/log-in/en-gb?redirect_to=........................ which is blocked due to it being in the Top level domain. I have tried applying a webfilter URL Pattern to both the custom allowed list and the Wordpress Subsites category, which when i do a category check it correctly displays both categories and blogs category... wordpress\.com/log-in/en-gb\?redirect\_to\=.* so you would think the logon page is unblocked... no its blocked under the category blogs still although having superceding rules permitting the logon page to be unblocked Anyone have any words of wisdom or tips on how they have got around this issue TIA

My gym (gym etc)has announced that they have frozen subscription charges for 2 months pending review for extension. Are you not able to freeze your subscription temporarily. Tbh For £60 a month I’d cancel. I pay £20 and have access to well kitted out gym, relaxing pool, sauna, jacuzzi, etc

If you had said you were in a secondary school I would have said yes, no need for internal phones in classrooms. Secondaries have more responsible kids that can look after themselves for a moment or a trusted student could easily go on an errand. Secondaries tend to have better alternative means of instant communication Eg sims, teams, Skype, email etc. But the swinging question would be how the secondary school find a balance of avoiding misuse and responding to safeguarding protocol which may require for calling emergency services. Primaries on the other hand having seen how primaries work, they sometimes have two adults in the classroom but have also seen classes with just 1 adult at times and this is where the problem lie, the children are more vulnerable and teachers find it difficult to leave a room even to collect a printout from the central printer in the corridor so the need for a telephone in every classroom in my opinion necessary unless you can introduce and train staff something like Skype or teams for instant communication. I have seen in the past teachers use their own social media to WhatsApp another teacher to look after the kids whilst she had to do a time sensitive task. What she did sensible for the safety of the children but not ideal Hope this helps
