[sims] Capita is trying to sell off non-core businesses (SIMS is for sale)
LazyD replied to psydii's topic in MIS Systems
I can put in £40 to start the ball rolling if that helps? -
Thanks. This is one of the main things I am trying to avoid. I hear that BioStore is better in this, not-milking-customers, respect.

Civica is NRS right? What's the support like?
-
Where do I begin.. Have it running in a number of schools and the amount of support it requires is ridiculous. There literally seems to be about 2 (maybe 3 max) technical people in the company who can help with fixing any issues. Any syncing issues (which are very frequent), they are remoted into the server for hours, most of the day on many occasions. Despite us always asking us for them to let us know when they are done and if the problem is resolved they never ever do that and literally leave SMS and their back end software wide open and their session logged in sitting there, every single time. We have to contact them, have you finished or not? Ok, would have been nice of you to tell us, again. We have been waiting literally weeks for support from them, particularly at busy times like end of summer, start of September, calling everyday 'yes someone will get back to you' while the school is breathing fire at us. I take it AMI Infinity+ can be operated without cash loaders nowadays but they still seem to promote them and they are in use in the schools where we have Infinity+ currently in use. Don't get be started on them. If you've ever had to open one to troubleshoot issues you will know what kind of ramshackle pieces of nonsense they are. Of course they frequently break down and problems that can't be fixed by us are chargeable, and not cheap (despite paying the contract fee). They are extremely reluctant to send people to site. I'm actually shocked that someone has defended Infinity+ and even used the words 'rock solid' about it, I need to go and lie down for a bit.

Hi All, Am trying to move away from awful and ancient AMI Infinity+ system with cash loaders asap. New solution and hardware needs to integrate with ParentPay, as is commonly the case. The new solution needs to support finger/thumb print reader and RFID card. I have demo's booked with 2 of these companies for this week. I have read a lot about all 3 of these solutions/products. Cunningham's seem to be market leaders but almost everything I've read about their support says it's terrible. I've also read that they are considerably more expensive on initial outlay and very expensive when it comes to onsite visits and after sales support items. I've heard very little about Civica as, from what I can find, not that many schools are using it? What I have heard about it seems to be good though...? BioStore is probably my forerunner at the moment based on cost and after sales support. Most things I have read say BioStore's support is good but then again I have read a few saying it's not (although no where near the numbers of accounts of people saying Cunningham's is terrible). I have read that there are sometimes Sync issues between BioStore FasTrak and ParentPay. I know people have asked similar things here before but I wanted to get a poll of people's opinions on this, and hopefully from some people that have had experience with more than one of these solutions. What is your recommendation? Thanks!

SIMS 2016 Migration Tool - Install SIMS Server on Destination or not?
LazyD replied to LazyD's topic in MIS Systems
Ok. The migration tool documentation has a specific section all based around my scenario, moving to a new server. So if you would not recommend the migration tool in my scenario, what procedure would you recommend? Install SIMS manually on destination server, uninstall SQL Express instance, install SQL Standard and attach databases? -
Hi, Am currently doing a SIMS server migration from an old server and domain that was using SQL 2012 to a new server and different domain that has a waiting installation of SQL Server 2016 Standard. The tool has detached and got the SQL databases out as bak files from the old server. As far as I can see there is no mention of how the SIMS server components should be set up on the destination server. I mean things like the SIMS shared folder (containing Setups, etc) and the ini files. Considering that running the SIMS Installable main release (2013) normally installs an SQL Express instance (which I don't want), whats the method for getting SIMS on this new server? There seems to be no mention of this scenario in the 2016 migration tool documentation, it just talks about the detaching and attaching operation. Do I need to manually create the relevant folders in the new share on the new server (copying the SIMS folder over from the old server)? Then manually edit the ini files? Thanks

This PS is amazing mate.

Do you still have this error on-going? Those machines that suffered this, graphics drivers installed properly?

Normally you would just run a link cable, copper or fibre (depending on the length of the run). Your landlords are being unreasonably restrictive if they won't let you get a cable run done between ends of the building. I would never recommend a wireless link (bridge) for this application. Where would you put it anyway, on the roof? They won't let you run an infrastructure cable but they will let you install a line of sight point to point radio link on the roof(s)? Doesn't make sense. You need to provide a couple of fibre modules on each end and plug them into the switches on your fabric (and buy new switches if you need to) and make a standard wired link. The only real alternative to a wired link is to (as strawberry said) set up a site-to-site VPN. Which will still cost money anyway as you would need to have devices on both ends that then plug into switching fabric, and all traffic would have to be tunnelled through the internet via ISP only to get back to the building, increasing latency and introducing more points of failure (including on-going management for the lifetime of the 'solution'), which would be a big shame when the required link is in the same building. It will be considerably cheaper in both short and long term (for all stakeholders) to just run a wired cable.

Atomic Zombie, I tried to do that (and tried to restore a backup) but got one of the long errors from dbattach related to a few dll's and other files that were missing from the destination SQL instances BINN folder. This stuff is normally put into the BINN folder by the Capita migration tool but as that obviously wasn't working, it wasn't there. Capita in the end got the script that performs that part of the migration and ran that (which put all the Capita stuff in the SQL 2016 BINN folder) and then a restore from backup worked. It 'seems' to be ok now. Although I have seen a few weird things so far, like some FMS users user ID (login) was blank, so had to recreate, and some other users are claiming that things they normally have permissions to do in SIMS they no longer have. I am also a bit disturbed by your claim that this method can affect performance. Olliesaurus, I would say it's infuriating to a medium level but with potential to become highly infuriating.
-
Thanks for this Rawns. I seem to get 2 entries for each user though, all details in all columns identical. So if I have 1 user logged into each SIMS and FMS, I get 4 rows. Is this expected?

How has it been resolved when you have seen this issue before?
-
Hi Atomic_Zombie, thanks for your reply. What Server OS are you on? I am using Server 2016 Standard. I have done everything the documents suggest, the firewall right now to SQL instances is wide open. As mentioned earlier, I doubt this is a straight up FW issue anyway as disabling it completely did not help. I have also logged a call with Capita this morning. Don't know what else to try right now. You say it's hit and miss, so you have done a few of these and found them to randomly behave differently?
