I've done this with a combination of the Tips/tricks Sticky in this Forum, and by hiding/preventing access to the C: drive via GP. What I haven't been able to do is remove the Network icon from the Open File/Save File dialog in Office 2007......which for some obscure reason doesn't seem to use the Common Open File Dialog that can be tweaked with Group Policy. I've hidden it for most of my other apps, but Office just won't play nice. Sorry to hijack your thread, Laura, but if you or anyone else has managed this, I'd be grateful for the 'How to....'.

Our Schools IT Support Service said that they didn't have the time or resources to evaluate Google and Live@, so they evaluated Live@ and decided to go with that. That's a relief.........wasn't anything to do with them being Microsoft Partners, then. As far as I'm concerned, I'm with Glennda on this one, I like to keep everything in house. Just too many questions about security and confidentiality for my liking. As well as the fact that what we do now works ok, so why fix it?

Sorry to hijack this thread but it's the same request, different county. Anyone gone Virtual in Hertfordshire? I really need to start getting my head around it and planning for it, and would like to have a first-hand look at what I'm going to need in terms of hardware and software. Oh yeah, and money.

Only had this with one of our Apps.......SIMS.......I know, hard to believe, isn't it. Right-click on the exe file, 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' and set to run in 'XP SP2 Mode'. Thanks to someone on here for that, can't remember who, but I'm sure you know who you are.

The way I see it, and this is definitely not school policy just my own view, is that the network belongs to the school, the school (meaning I) will get done for any copyright/inappropriate/offensive material........so privacy is something they get at home. Obviously Hotmail/Gmail etc are strictly out of bounds. Having said that, I'm gonna have to raise it now, because I don't think our AUP covers that.........I haven't read it for ages.

Moved from LEA supplied Mcaffee to Avast last July......centrally managed, pushes out updates, deploys from the management console, discovers new machines from AD, Exchange server version available.....revealed shedloads of trojans, malwares etc that Mcaffee didn't pick up at all. Licensed from the server, updates from the server unless it can't be contacted (teacher's laptops during holidays etc) then it updates from the internet. Very pleased with it indeed, doesn't seem to slow the machines down at all. Speak to Stan at avast! Contacts if you can, really helpful guy.

What's everone's favourite method for re-educating staff? Mine is sarcasm, followed by biting wit and eventually just a contemptuous shake of the head.

Almost exactly what we have here, (except the shares aren't hidden, and slightly different names) with profiles on one server and userdata on another. And we use csvde to import the new September intake every year. Casual admissions are done manually. That's on a vanilla 2003 & XP network. What do other schools/techs do about/with casual leavers and Yr 11 &13 Leavers? There's no protocol in place here to inform us of leavers of any kind. I'm beginning to think that the rest of the staff think we have retractable RJ45 plugs on our fingers that we plug into the network to find out these things.....you know, like R2D2 plugging in to the Death Star to shut down the rubbish compressor things.

How have you guys got SIMS to work on x64 Windows 7? Every time I install it on my test machine, it fails when it tries to install the 16-bit components. I vaguely remember something about a fix from Capita, but I'm getting old now and my memory isn't what it used to be..........

Still 2003 & XP/O2K7 here. Plans for upgrading had to be rescheduled due to financial circumstances. I'd rather do the back-end first too, so 2008 first then Windows 7. As someone else said, not through necessity, more to keep pace with new intakes who have Vista/7 on home computers, otherwise I'd wait until support for XP is withdrawn........if it ain't broke etc. Changed my focus now to cost-savings through virtualisation, expansion of thin-client network etc.

I use a registry setting, HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS NT/CURRENT VERSION/WINLOGON Two string values there, LegalNoticeCaption & LegalNoticeText. The Text string says they're agreeing to the school AUP/Code of Conduct, copies of which are posted on-line and A3 size posters in every computer room. The posters make it clear that they're a 'Reminder of the terms YOU signed when agreeing to use school compters'. You can either build the reg setting into your images or deploy it with policy, which is what I do. That should of course read, 'The Text string says that by cicking OK, they're agreeing etc etc blah And it will work on TS, set the registry seting on your servers.

Nah, it's not just you, I had a similar experience last year installing the 'free, single-licence' version of BES 4 (or whatever). The first bit that confused me was, having read on their Marketing blurb that it doesn't need a server of it's own and can sit on your messaging server, and having done that, then being told by their support people that it can't sit on the messaging server but has to have its own server. So I had to turn round and build a whole new server (lucky we had one spare, huh?) just for one person. Admittedly, that person was the Head, but even so..... It just got worse from there on. I found the support were great at the big stuff, but not so hot on the little details, like setting the handset to 'Enterprise' mail and so on. The easiest part was getting my GFL to open up the port on our router, and that's what I was expecting most trouble with. I've downloaded BES Express and I was meaning to get round to installing it sometime........probably when someone on the SLT p*ss*d me off enough to tell the Head that all the SLT can now be Blackberried, too. But, having read your post, I think I'll forgo that momentary, fleeting pleasure...........it don't seem worth it.

Ye-es, I know that. I took the password requirement off in case it was too much for their little intellec........sorry......fingers to type, trying to make it as e-a-s-y as possible. Then i realised that it's not anything to do with that at all.....it's all to do with 'Can't do, won't do'.

Unfortunately, all the FAQ's are pretty basic, 'Janet & John' stuff......staff here aren't really in the 21st Century yet, but they're on their way, they're almost at the Y2K roundabout and should be with the rest of us in ten years or so. Creating a Signature in Outlook.......that one went down well. Proxy settings in IE, How to conect to your home wi-fi, direction to finding the Outlook Address Book and Distribution Groups....... It's difficult to know what to set-up as a FAQ, if you don't get any feedback, only 10%-ish of users ever bother using WHD, and you get no support from SLT......I feel like I'm flogging a dead horse with it all, really. I've tried putting myself in the head-space of a newly-appointed teacher or NQT, to try to work out which questions they would frequently ask, but I've not had much success with that. Maybe if I kept taking the medication.......... So here we sit with this £800+ package that could make all our lives easier in way or another, and Disinterest Rools, OK.

Morning everyone, We have a small TS network, which I am looking to enlarge as our pc's come up for rolling replacement. We need to start providing audio and possibly better quality video so that Terminal Services will be more viable for MFL etc. Anyone got any advice on hardware, sound cards, gfx cards etc? Anyone got any experiences they would share? Network is fibre to all blocks, but with some cable-runs being up to 500 metres. Switches are a mixture of Foundry Core and Edge switches and HP Procurves. TIA

I've had WebHelpDesk for about two years now, it's terrific, all of it. Asset Tracking, LDAP, Reporting, Fault Tracking.......the whole nine yards. Only problem is the staff, who've largely ignored it. Two years and it's only just logged the 1,000th call. This despite removing the need to enter a password, creating a link in Favourites and Links with GP, and constantly chanting, 'Would you log a call for this, please?'. I'm going to set-up e-mail ticket creation later this week, see if that improves the usage. Nice to know that other schools/colleges are using it, though, I thought I was the only one. But I'm not allowed out much.
