What other industry has wiped out more jobs? Or even on a similar scale? It continues to wipe out jobs as computers are able to do more and more. The combine harvester put farm-hands out of work, but it stopped there, it didn't put road-sweepers out of work, or lighthouse-men. Computers are still finding their way into every area of work and wipe out most jobs where they can be used, instead of using people. Deny it if you will, say I'm wrong if you will, have the last word/post, if you must. But I'm right.

Those jobs will disappear too, in time, or be relocated back here or somewhere else when the same wages/cost of living spiral hits those countries. My guess is that they'll disappear, really, technology is only going to get 'cleverer'. Eventually, we'll have motherboards making motherboards, and yeah, I know, who makes the first motherboard? It's historical that wherever a machine has been invented to do a job that a human was doing, the human gets put out of work. You seriously believe that with the world population rising as it is that there's going to be work for everyone?

When I first started, it took between 12-32 people to run a computer room 24/7/365, depending on the size and complexity of the m/f being operated, and that would be in one regional HQ, district HQ, so multiply that by the number of counties in the country, for example. Now it takes a quarter that number, if that What about all the manual jobs that have been/will be replaced by process-control computers? Sounds more to me like your in a bit of denial, there. As I've said, read Alvin Tofler's 'The Third Wave'. The book he wrote before it 'Future Shock' is an education too. Not believing is the first step to not evolving.

Has anyone out there stopped to think that we work, or have worked, in the one industry that's been responsible for putting more people out of work and removing more jobs from the 'market', than any other industry in history? Wake up, folks, smell the bacon sarnies, look out the window.......and realise that there will never be enough paid employment to go round anymore, not unless we drastically shorten the working-life of every employed individual, enforced retirement at 45-50, something like that. Read Alvin Toffler's 'The Third Wave', he predicted exactly this situation back in the 80's. Unless we all stop thinking of those without jobs as 'The Unemployed', as 'Benefit Scroungers', as uneducated, lazy, something-for-nothing layabouts, we're not going to evolve enough as individuals or as a society to cope with the even greater changes to come in the future. I thank a non-specific deity that I'm on the verge of retiring to somewhere where this is not an issue, because everyone's poor, and that I don't need to come up with or be part of a solution. But I also remind myself every day that, as my skill-set increased and became more remunerative, so that skill-set put other people out of work......for ever, in some cases. @nephilim, I've had my times out of work while I had a young family, they're not easy, I know, but I found anger and ranting to be so counter-productive. Try and channel it into something more positive.

I have to say that although I've never seen her/him/it (never do trust avatar pics) posting on here before, RoF's first comment had me rolling on the floor.....Let's face it, if the OP didn't want to appear or be deemed 'Horrible' then give in and hand over the treats and be deemed 'Not Horrible' and probably labelled as 'We'll go back there next year'. Don't choose a course of action then whine over the effect/consequences of that action, and ask for confirmation from your peer-group (on here) that you're not Horrible, really......that's just insecure. And while I'm enhancing my rep no end, I'll wager, what's the deal with keeping a gun by the front door, inert or not? Only cleaning it? Yeah, sure. Best light to do it by is in the entrance-hall by the front door? Get brighter lightbulbs or a reading-lamp. If you don't have an entrance-hall and the front door opens directly into your living-room, well.......sorry, and continue to clean your weapons by the front door. I shared a buffet table and a couple of coffees with Helen Morgan, on a train from Cardiff to Bristol, back in 1975. She was the Miss World that had her title withdrawn for not declaring she was an unmarried mother, I think it was. She ended up being the Lovely Assistant on 'Mr and Mrs', if anyone remmbers that. We chatted the whole 45-60 minute journey, I never mentioned the Miss World title or the TV show and she was happy to chat about everyday, 'normal' stuff. When we got off the train, her to go to the studios and me to get a connection to Exeter, we shook hands and she kissed me on the cheek. I would like to say that I haven't washed since, but, of course, I haven't.

Didn't knw he was half-French, tbh, the other reference I made was to a song by Max Boyce, which, years and years ago, we all laughed at and thought was a) Hilarious and B) Harmless. But you still haven't said how you'll pay them all. Or how they're different from other 'artifically created jobs'. If they're going to be apprenticed, why don't we spend that money on proper apprenticeship schemes (like the old defunct Industrial Training Boards) that would benefit the infrastructure. Mostly for exactly that.......the sun. Other factors are that I don't want to spend the last few years of my life worrying whether my cold weather payment has gone into the bank before I switch on the heating or get out from under the duvet......... I no longer regard this country as suitable for anyone of pensionable age, unless they're the people who got us in this mess in the first place........and my own pension will be so meagre, that I'm going to have find a third-world country to make the most of it. But you haven't answered my question....how are we going to pay all these newly conscripted squaddies? Surely they are jobs which are being 'artifically created', whether to help the economy or to take unemployable youngsters off the streets or off whatever allowance they get these days.

+1 .... in a way. I'm not really sure the Army would want to take the ones who are 'not prepared to aspire both academically or vocationally ', and I'm not sure I'd want them guarding the wall for me, either. I don't know much about military hardware, but I do know it gets more sophisticated as technology advances. Personally, I'd rather have an army of regulars that knows how to work it's equipment, not an army of conscripts that can't read, can hardly write and can't express themselves verbally, either. But hey, what do I know?
