  1. I learned French up until 14, then dropped it as part of what is now year 9/10 options, whatever. Fifteen years later, I went travelling and odd-jobbing round France for the best part of a year, and came back fluent. It worked for me.
  2. As if being the only member of staff apart from the Site Team isn't enough........the Site Team are testing all the fire alarms, so every few minutes there's a non-specific-deity awful noise for about 2 minutes.
  3. I've just biinned an Athlon 2800+ on an MSI KT6Delta. Nothing wrong with it, really, but even with 2 Gig of PC3200, it just wouldn't do it anymore. Current replacement is not as state-of-the-art as the KT6 was when I built it. No onboard Firewire, which I miss. Only 4 x USB's onboard. Been meaning to build a new one for the last couple of years, but it looks like this year will be THE year. I fancy an acrylic case with all the flashing led's and fluorescent cabling. It's gonna be the last one I build myself before I go totally tablet....iPad....whichever, so I might as well indulge myself.
  4. Me......I'm in......til Friday then off til 3/1/12
  5. IMHO.....you don't work here, and yes, our kids changed the extension almost as soon as I'd blocked .zips......the favourite was to call it .zit. Then I had complaints that staff were unable to send/rec zip files. I'm not going to play catch-up with a bunch of teenagers who steadfastly refuse to obey any aspect of the AUP, especially when I get minimal support from SLT, and especially with only just under 2 years to go. I know full-well how important e-mail is as a communication tool, I've been using it since the early 90's.
  6. Due to massive misuse, we've just removed e-mail facility from years 7 - 11. It was just a nightmare, games whizzing back and fore between students, huge zip files full of Flash Games, Outlook being used as Instant Messaging in class, cyber-bullying, the whole nine yards. Finally, when we had to impose Inbox quotas ( a nightmare in themselves) to keep downthe size of the database, SLT gave in to our requests and took away their e-mail. Casual but regular monitoring of classroom workstations with NetOp reveals that most students are now 'On Task' instead of time-wasting with games, e-mail and Outlook. In a nutshell, don't give them more access, take it away completely......it worked for us.
  7. You mean.....there are 'normal' schools?
  8. "Hurricane Bawbag Update: A plant pot has fallen over in Airdrie. An eye witness retold the horror "it pure went sideways"" TracerTong rotflmfao Pure went sideways lolololol
  9. Obviously Christmas must be just around the corner.
  10. My First Computer lolol What I think is that if it had a nice bright LED under the cover, it would make a perfect table-lamp/media player. But I can see the attraction if you have an iPod, iPhone, iPodTouch or an iPad, or if you're unsure, uncertain or just plain don't know anything about computers other than running them.
  11. Yes, I'm sure it is.
  12. When I brought it home, I flattened it and reinstalled OXS to get rid of any wrinkles, glitches, bugs and organisational identification...and to be 'nicey tidy' maybe you could try that. Took about a day to get all the Apple s/w updates d/l'ed and installed. I've had to force reboot it a couple of times, but only after it's been running for days or weeks at a time, which I'm not going to complain about. Otherwise, no problems at all. Trouble is, I think of things to do with it and to install on it while I'm at work then when I get home, I've either forgotten or can't be a*s*d and just veg out with a movie. Like, for instance, there was a game back in The Day, Sundog:Frozen Legacy, which was originally written for (original) Macs.........wonder if I can find a working version for Mini's. Anyone remember it, btw? Sundog:Frozen Legacy? No? Oh well................
  13. Not being a Pokemon afficianado, it would have been completely lost on me, anyway. The Twilight Zone (doo do doo do....you know) is sort of my theme tune, it seems to be the most appropriate for this place.
  14. And I don't have YouTube, so I guess neither of us will ever know the full story. I'm guessing it's not that funny, anyway.
  15. Errrmmmm.......don't quite know how to say this but,...... I've had a 5 year old Mac Mini at home for the last month or two, and it has been so easy and trouble free to install anything I've needed. Admittedly, I haven't got right into it like I have with my pc, in finding 'value-added' or 'shiny' software e.g. the mail program is pretty basic to say the least, but device connection has been a complete doddle, so has connecting it to my home lan, even plugging my Panasonic camcorder into it produced immediate working results. Installing software is so much easier (for a novice/non-expert) than on a Windows box....OpenOffice, Divx Player, required codecs etc, the only problems I've had seem to be previously encountered and much discussed on various forums, so I don't think they're down to me. And as a media-player it really whips the Llama's Ass, as they say. I have it plugged into my TV, the resolution set itself correctly without any intervention from me.......it was all so E-A-S-Y. Some minor annoyances with stuff that hasn't been ported over to Mac, like mIRC for example. I haven't tried it yet, but there's a Shoutcast version for Mac, which is encouraging and, I daresay, challenging. In short, I'm impressed. I'm not sure it's capable of running OSX Lion, but if it is, I'm sure I'd shell out for it, even though I'd have to go to Snow Leopard and then Lion. I know someone in the States who's just gone completely Apple......Mac Mini, iPhone, iPad, iCloud...... she's delighted with it all and I can understand the attraction. Am I turning into a Fan Boy? Am I getting old and just want a quiet life? Or am I.........Evolving?
  16. Being happy to take the lead should instantly reserve you a place against the wall, to my mind. What difference is one more political party going to make? Power corrupts etc...... As a famous man once said, 'There is no political solution to our troubled evolution'.
  17. Wow, that's worth having.....any jobs going round there?
  18. Very seriously wrong.
  19. Yes.
  20. Second time I've read 'Divide And Rule' in this thread. I already tried to explain about the 'Divide And Rule' concept in another thread, and I was told, basically, to grow-up, get real, the only divisions were in my head etc. Seems to me like you're all slowly beginning to wake up. This whole thread is 'Divide And Rule' in action.
  21. Actually, you're all being used as unpaid extras in the remake of..... IMDb - Das Mercury Puzzle (1998)
  22. Never seen Jimmy Carr, but it sounds like I wouldn't find him funny anyway. Eddie Izzard I find hilarious, Billy Connolley and Denis Leary too, but none of the current crop of so-called 'Comedians'. In context, I recently downloaded an old live performance by Victor Borg. I can't remember the year it was made right now, but it was back in the 90's. No smut, no innuendo, no racism, no cheap shots at challenged minorities.......just really funny wit, human observation and performance.
  23. +1 Nuff said.
  24. Here, the Head is waiting to find out if the Site Team are going out before she decides whether toclose the school for the day. Don't know about anyone else here, but I'm 'withdrawing my labour'........but then, I'll do anything for a day off, these days. Occassional Day tomorrow.....w00t
  25. WebHelpDesk Web Help Desk - Powerful and Affordable Help Desk Software Does it all, rate it very highly, and I've used lots of HD solutions down the years. Would work even better if the staff used it instead of point-blank ignoring it, whilst saying 'Why can't we phone you or ambush you in the corridor/schoolyard/staff room etc the way we always used to?' So now I spend at least 30 minutes of every day taking time to log calls on their behalf, updating them, having a leisurely coffee not answering the phone and generally dossing-off.......which is a Result, in it's own way.
