That's a drag. Like I say, my experience (and I gave it two years) with ADSL was fine if you live within a klick or two of the exchange, and if your internal wiring's immaculate. But once it started dropping, it was obviously a poor second to cable. I changed all my internal extensions, all my microfilters, bought a new phone and bought my own wireless router (linksys WAG54G), to replace the kak one that BT sent me. BT sent a horde of engineers out, couldn't fix it, kept promising me they would and in the meantime, sorry, no, I couldn't be given a discount as they couldn't ascertain the cause of the drops etc so in the end.......the rest is history.

Presumably, you're in a non-Virginmedia cabled are? If you are in a cabled are.....change......end of story. I've had both, Virgin (when it was NTL) and ADSL supplied by BT, approx 650-750 metres from the exchange. I changed from NTL to BT, cos NTL p****d me off over something. Once the BT signal started dropping out, I was changing micro-filters almost like changing socks, after two years of fiddling about with BT engineers, test-sockets, microfilters, my internal wiring and their external wiring, I went gratefully back to Virginmedia. Plug, play, sorted.

According to my three, Father's Day is the day that I pick them all up, take them all out shopping and eating, and then they give me a card. I started on a 360/30 in November of 1970. A massive 64k of memory, 3 disks (as I remember), paper-tape, punch-card, 6 tape-decks and 3 disk drives, and a printer, as I recall. Bit of a low-end mainframe compared to the one in the picture. Eleven-hour shifts, 4 nights on, 4 off, 5 days on, 5 off or some such. Every 64 shifts, we had to top-up our hours by working from 6.30pm to 11pm, in addition to the normal shift...........Happy Days, indeed.

I use VLC here for everything, it's the only player I've found that works straight after install without loading any additional codec packs etc. And my experience with PowerDVD, ThisDVDplayer, ThatDVDPLayer, NeroDVD, UncleTomCobleyAndAllDVDWizard, Windows Misery Player and so on has not been good.

I've got our Context Menu completely disabled for students....there's a multitude of ways they can do what they NEED to do without the context menu, and the things they don't NEED to do, well, they don't NEED to do them....End Of.

It plays ok on XP, but the gfx is so carp, and I couldn't get any of the sound to work. Maybe he's going to bring out a *nix version to go on his USB PC for $25.

Doesn't say when he's bringing out an updated version of 'Frontier - First Encounters'...........maybe he's not going to.

Are you going to achieve the upgrade with updates or will the new version be a fresh install with imported settings?

+1 for getting bored running round everywhere. This thread is so old, I'm almost embarrassed to post an update. Played Land Warrior and BHD until all the servers dried up and my squaddies and I got too involved in real-life to play online anymore. BHD rocked, Novalogic rooled until they couldn't step up to the next level of online-gaming. Don't really play anything online anymore, I keep saying 'I'll build a new games machine next year.....' I had one of these going back 2004-5 time. It was pretty good as I recall, but can't remember which version. I remember there was quite an active open-source firmware development community around for linksys routers, although I never actually tried any of the ones available for download. it didn't seem broke, so I didn't want to fix it. I guess for a fiver, it might be worth playing with a bit. The wireless burnt-out after about 2 years, though, closely followed by the switch ports. As long as it's all working ok, I would say you got your money's worth........mine cost me £85 or thereabouts.

What courses would I attend? Server 2008 Admin, Disaster Recovery, VMWare implementation and Admin, anything else I thought would be a benefit Books? Not really keen on books, tend to get most stuff from User Guides and manuals. A set of Office Dummies Guides would be useful......but who to give them to? The list would be long and distinguished. Conferences? Any that are held in Vegas, The Bahamas, Rio, Cardiff or anywhere where there's Dancing Girls and tequila.

Technician Training? Nada.......Zilch....... Nothing.......Zero........£0.00p Can't even get reimbursed petrol money for attending LEA Support Service seminars and briefings.

FWIW.......I use EzMSI to create any msi packages that aren't supplied. It's a free download and it's given me a 90% success rate so far, I would estimate. I'm just doing the test-bed-suck-it-and-see thing here, myself, school won't pay for training and don't realise that I don't have a an RJ45 plug on my finger to learn things with, a la R2D2. Installed Hyper-V on 2008, but I didn't relaise the Datacentre Edition was more suitable so thanks for that, whoever said that, I'll start again with that Edition. I've got ESXi running on my test-host at this time, and it seems a bit easier to deal with. Botttom line is the learning curve is not as steep as I thought it would be, although I expect it to steepen the more I get into it. I guess this is what's meant by 'Learning Through Play'.

In Group Policy, User Configuration/Policies/Windows Components/Windows Explorer/Common Open File Dialog. There's some (limited) options in there. I think that's what I used to lock-down these dialogs, can't remember rightly now, in combination with the other items under Windows Explorer. I also set the 'Items displayed in Places Bar' to only display the root of their Home Folder. That all seemed to get me where I wanted to with the Pupil Policy. Still have to look at the Office 2007 policies for another problem along the same lines.....access to areas you'd rather not have them access.
