Halfmad Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Next week is the last week up here before the summer holidays start. Does anyone else always find the last couple of weeks hectic? I've got so many daft requests coming in that are "urgent" when they're clearly not. "I can't play DVDs on my IWB" is one of the more befuddling ones. I go to check it out and it's Shrek or Ocean's Eleven, in a chemistry lab! I have tons of work that must be completed by the start of the holidays, suppliers to chase up, images to get departments to "sign off" so they can be used over the summer, etc, etc, etc. I'm utterly swamped!
t_guest Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 im ruining round like a headless chicken sorting problems out
andyrite Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 It's smartboard season here. Everybody wants one. Getting 14 fitted over summer. I do enjoy this time of year. Even with the strange requests you get from staff!
witch Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 We still have 4 weeks to go - except me as I have blagged the last week off! Mostly I am trying to get the new antivirus in and working. The big boss keeps asking me to get quotes for things so goodness knows what I will come back to after the holiday! He has a habit of doing that - I have begged to be kept in the loop and have said that I will come in during the holidays when the stuff (whatever it is) is being installed. Mostly though, I am moving purposefully around carrying a cable/CD drive/important looking piece of paper - the big bonus of being alone in a school is that noone really knows what you do so you can get away with 'research' on Edugeek or whatever!
Cmd.exe Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Last year I had the last week of term as holiday and it was the best decision I ever made, as the network spontaneously combusted that week. This year, no holiday and I am juggling getting quotes and site surveys for 20 projector and 5 IWB installs, a new server and then planning and carrying out merging our separate admin and curriculum networks... and yet I still find time to post here!
Jake Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Oddly enough, its at this time that we start to wind down to a degree. We have loads to do over the summer break (we are in all the way through the breaks), and when we are nearing the summer break we tend to start slowing right down and only doing really quick jobs. Everything else we just put off til the summer break now
enjay Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Similar here, halfmad. All the things which have been getting put off until the end of term are suddenly looming again, plus research and quotes for the summer installations. BTW, unless you've sorted out public performance licences, watching Shrek in school is illegal... unless you can find an educational benefit to it.
Scotmk Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 We have 3 new ict rooms and a delivery of about 100 pc's that will need to be built and setup on the system for September, (great fun!!!!!!) Can see it now, keyboards, mice, boxes, packaging, oh the packaging!
StewartKnight Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 I'm looking forward to putting my feet up for 6 weeks! Staff "expect" me to be in, fixing things... imaging desktops etc, put I'm not paid to be in, and you never see a teacher in over the hols (science dept... I'm looking at you....)!
Halfmad Posted June 22, 2007 Author Posted June 22, 2007 BTW, unless you've sorted out public performance licences, watching Shrek in school is illegal... unless you can find an educational benefit to it. teachers just don't want to know sadly, warned them on several occassions about showing dvds in here!
Nij.UK Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Is it not a bit early to be breaking up for summer already, or am i just being stupid, schools and stuff around leicestershire are breaking up for summer around the 13th july...

Everything else we just put off til the summer break now Same here I dont really mind it Everyone is a bit more relaxed too
Jake Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 teachers just don't want to know sadly, warned them on several occassions about showing dvds in here! Tell me about it, we even have some who show 18 certificated movies
rsarg Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 we have 32 laptops and 65 new desktops coming soon and then it's the moving of the better desktops to other rooms for old ones wat a good 6 weeks we r goin to have lol
witch Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Nij.UK: Scotland breaks up much earlier than England but they go back in August! Most schools break up around the 2oth so it is you breaking up early!
crc-ict Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Well, out of nine schools, I have two really busy ones. In one, I have to rebuild ten machines in two hours a week before the summer, and the other everything is just manic. The other seven, however, are really quiet as we're winding down (still 4 weeks here too) so there's basically b***er all to do!
enjay Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Is it not a bit early to be breaking up for summer already, or am i just being stupid, schools and stuff around leicestershire are breaking up for summer around the 13th july... Not really - Scottish schools wrap up around now (but do go back mid-August) and most if not all English independent schools have finished by the second week of July - we finish on 6th. State schools round here go until 25th, so your 13th is actually quite early!

Well this is leicestershire im talking about, and they do tend to wrap up a week before most the uk Cheers for the insight
projector1 Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 we have 32 laptops and 65 new desktops coming soon and then it's the moving of the better desktops to other rooms for old ones wat a good 6 weeks we r goin to have lol good luck, we have limited funds this year so i guess it will be a case of consolidating what we have. We are migrating to a vanilla setup so currently rolling out new xp images across the site. And then after four weeks one has to go to india for 3 weeks inluding a weeks stay in GOA! bring it on!!!!!!
witch Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Just been told unofficially that I will have to clear out my store room in the summer as the water pipes in there need work. My switches are in there!! Also have been told that there will be no access to the school at all in the summer due to drainage work. So what exactly am I supposed to do with the 20 machines being kindly donated to me by a lovely fellow edugeeker? I havent even got a garage! AND I havent been told ANY of this officially, which is a bit daft as I go on holiday on July 13th
starscream Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 One of my schools is moving across to a new school building and are getting brand new equipment so all the old is being sold off. It is a race against time to DBAN, create and deploy xp images to them all by the end of term. If that wasn't enough I am setting up server - client networks from scratch in 3 schools and don't even have the hardware at 2 yet. Better to burn out than to fade away I suppose!
Geoff Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 So what exactly am I supposed to do with the 20 machines being kindly donated to me by a lovely fellow edugeeker? Store them in the heads office. I find that usually gets the point across. If your not feeling that brave. Try the staff room. Preferably in the way of the brew making facilities or photocopier. AND I havent been told ANY of this officially, which is a bit daft as I go on holiday on July 13th Ah well, you were never told then. Were you?
john Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Hey don't block my copiers in, there is only the man in charge of reprographics allowed to box copiers in and thats me Besides, you never know when you may need to copy some more DO NOT FEED JAKE Signs to go round his cage
witch Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Good idea about staff room - but the problem is that I have been told that the drain repair means that the whole school will be out of bounds. There is one advantage to never being told anything - you can do what you like!!
ctbjs Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 all chilled here really. Just have to have our vle implemented, new server installed for moving the admin network off its current subnet and joined to the curriculum network, sims data transfer, bromcom and all the other gubbins that goes with it, network down for the first week, set up 210 workstation ready for move into new school in feb next year and that's before they start coming to me and asking about dvd players for the last week of term so they can watch shrek. Although i had a request the other day for a presentation suite be setup in our lower school hall so that they could play a dvd through an OHP !!!! novel idea.....
