I disagree slightly, the problem with trains is the older technology that they rely on which in our case is the track. With these cabins they can use the most up to date materials and methods and in some ways control any problems they may encounter.

With proper engineering it'd be far safer than flying or even driving. You're only picking up a cabin and dropping one off, they can easily put in safety measures that mean the train won't pick up if it's going too fast or drop off if it's doing so too late. I have a feeling it won't be anywhere near as simple as the animation indicates, wouldn't be surprised if they use sets of magnets to aid in the deceleration.

It's great, until of course we want fresh fruit and the supermarkets start bumping prices up due to it taking ages to get any goods into the country and them running out.

Happens everywhere, users love to moan but when things are going well (99.9% of the time) nobody thinks to mention it. It's rare for me to be thanked by most of my users even if I've worked overtime or bank holidays to suit their needs, yes I get paid for it but it's completely optional to me and only done to make their life easier. I recently got asked by a group of users at a meeting why they don't see me on site as often (I have 75 sites I support). I pointed out that I'm using remote tools and fixing faults with scripts or silent installers more and more now and pro-actively fixing faults in one site which has cropped up at another before it gets there. They actually seemed upset that I'd not want to go on site and one even asked if they could get a fixed time for me to come out each week as they just "wanted to point out any problems they had on that week", hell never heard of the helpdesk we have staffed 24/7? I.T. is a very thankless job, glad I have a good home life or it'd simply be soul destroying. Thing is, like most folks on Edugeek I actually enjoy the work, it's the people I work for that make it difficult to do the 3 hours commuting each day!

I'd rather he just learnt to crop an image.. I doubt it'd improve the performance score though.

I just have the logon script removing any temp and temp internet files at logon from both local PC and server profile area as well as stopping them syncing using group policies (although doesn't always seem to work on older domains).

Done this with a logon script using the SC command for XP clients.

Morning folks, I've discovered that we need to disable automatic updates on one of our old domains temporarily. I'm unable to find a group policy in Server 2000 SP4 that covers this, any ideas? I'd like to keep it to group policy as once our developers get a bug fixed I want to turn it back on and roll out IE8, but until then it has to be turned off!

That's so you're line's IP profile is given time to update properly, otherwise you're line can be artificially set lower than it should be if the router is turned off or restarted a lot within a short period. Oddly BT lines will downgrade a line quickly, but take up to 10 days to put it back up to maximum speed. If you're not happy with the speed you get after 10 days ask them to reset you're IP profile and try again, if it's the same story and you're reasonably close to an exchange I'd be looking at internal cabling. I had that problem a few months ago thanks to poorly fitted laminate flooring! Gone from 2meg to 14meg since.

Alternatively just don't have car mats! I don't have them in my Aygo

Just curious - how long does it take for status messages to start appearing, I've added a few servers and sensors for them but nothing appears in the overview, the servers are shown on the main public facing page. Checked config of site in IIS, looks fine, been running for about 1 hour at 5min intervals.

Completely stuck on the final steps, tried just about everything to get it. we have a very long domain name which might not be helping it and I'm not sure I can use a .local or .internal address, neither seem to work anyway. have it installed with the host address as "netmonitor" domain name is (fake address here) "domain.parent.company.co.uk CNAME is set to: alias: netmonitor (automatically fills in .domain.parent.company.co.uk) FQDN: servername.domain.parent.company.co.uk Is this even vaguely correct? any URL I try to use gives me an error. Tried about 10 different installations and DNS configs but I think I'm just getting more confused as time goes on. Been up and at work since 5:30am though so that's my excuse Any ideas? bit stumped!

Sounds like laptops might not be the solution you're. I agree with Strawberry, thin client might be a better solution if you're not needing the classes to be mobile. Alternatively have charging stations in the desks.

We're considering doing this at a few places and I was wondering what people had found when they did it? I've heard horror stories of users and SIDS coming over but computer accounts not and some issues with roles on the new 2003 servers. The migration would have be done incredibly quickly, so if it came down to mucking about or starting a clean 2003 domain I'd probably have to opt for the latter if we weren't fairly confident!

I agree with Hodge - and those who argue that if we all used public transport we'd pay less for them need to look at statistics for the past ten years showing a jump in public transport use and a massive increase in fairs. Fact is some people NEED their cars for work, I know I do. I can drive up to 500 miles a week on work related business, this isn't for fun, it's essential that I'm mobile to support remote sites and carry equipment. Without my car I couldn't physically do my job. I'd love to commute by public transport, but need the car during the day (and the government won't fund pool cars for us.)

Net connections are generally very reliable, but they're also very slow - some are only 0.5mb, others are up to 6mb. Problems of rural sites My only worry with VPN would be that the upload speeds of the sites are even worse, 256kb probably being about the highest. I think regardless of the solution it'll be slow though, no getting around the infrastructure!! VPN is a good idea though! might have to give it a bit of testing.
