  1. I'm trying to come up with a solution to this problem: We've got about 200 users, split over 55 sites who move around between the sites a lot. Many of them are rural sites with awful 'net access, but they all have their own 2003 domain and servers. They're separate domains as the sites operate as separate companies, but these staff are shared (complicated situation). Users are now gathering highly confidential data, this was saved locally but as they're now moving between sites they're wanting to be able to access this at any site, at any time. In general the users have very, very poor computer skills. Any suggestions how to manage this? Options I was considering were: 1. Sharepoint - limited knowledge myself on this, not sure it'd be simple enough for users (yes some are that bad). 2. Syncing remote shared areas to a central server, problem with this is that if they're on another site, they'll have another domain so permissions might be an issue. Downside is access speeds to the server could be slow due to garbage internet connections. 3. Sod permission - give them a logon for the central server and share from there. Downside is access speeds to the server could be slow. 4. USB pens - problems sharing data, people lose them, boss would shoot me even if we encrypted them. Any suggestions greatly welcomed!
  2. I'd much rather just change the IP in the apps to the new one but it's timescales, has to happen within 3 days and that's from a bare building to a fully working 80 office, 3 story building with 3 domains and 45 PCs/domain. The building won't even have any network hardware in, that'll all have to be done by us too. Of course we only have 3 staff to do it with.. However I know what you're saying and unfortunately changing this hack later won't be any easier than doing it correctly now, so I'm in two minds! The apps themselves are custom and although I could get the company in to alter them I know for a fact they'll mess it up and then leave us to fix it. I think that might be the only way to get things up and running in time though. Cheers Synack - dont' know why I was thinking of using lmhosts, completely around the wrong way - I know how it worked, just got myself confused. That's the problem with starting at 5am!
  3. We have a site where we're being forced to change the IP range, problem is that the way some of the legacy software works it'll require to still see the server on it's old IP address. What I was wondering was, if it'd be possible to have the server having two IP addresses and simply get the clients to resolve both back to the same server? I'm just trying to think of solutions to it, it's a few months off still I have a feeling that'd work, but with the clients on the new range, they should still resolve back to the old IP address if we manually set it in LMHOST surely? Or even as long as there's an entry in DNS as long as we had the switches setup correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong please folks, it's been a bloomin long day!
  4. He is an absolute moron then. All PCs (and a Mac is a PC), require hardware refresh or upgrades to continue being useful. It doesn't matter what type the PC is (windows or mac) it will require this as the software on it gets more resource hungry. If that's his only justificaiton then he shouldn't be in a management post. I've no problems with Macs, however generally parents want kids using equipment at school that they're likely to use in university or in business, there aren't an enormous number of macs out there despite what Mac fans want to claim. Unless of course he's going to run XP/Vista or Windows 7 on these Macs - which would be a complete waste of money when PC hardware is generally cheaper and you'd have to multiply it by 750x.
  5. Never suspended or excluded but I did get the belt once at primary (this was 1983/4). I remember why too, told the head teacher he was a "smelly bottom" after I was given a kicking and he refused to do anything about it.
  6. New HS/Fan for both my CPU and graphics card. Hoping they come today, graphics card (1950pro) was topping 110 degrees C last night!
  7. We have a hard drive crusher: SecureIT :: Camara Technology » SecureIT Service It's a lot of fun Oddly I Still run DBAN first, can't get out of the habit!
  8. Anyone else have problems with restores with this combination? We've enabled software encryption on our drives and I can't absolutely confirm that's the cause but previously we were able to restore successfully. Now our AD fails, even restoring in ADRM. I've only carried out a test restore with one of our 60 servers, but I've a feeling that when we get a chance to try another one it'll go similar road. Oddly event logs after restore show lots of errors that aren't there in the live server, so it's obviously not restoring everything, although there's no errors on either the backup or restore.
  9. Cheers mate, fortunately the local users had locked the desktop after logging in as administrator a few days ago rather than logging out. Managed to get in and delete the policy. Saved me a long drive to reboot it as you suggested! I'm off to kill someone, so I might not be posting for 5-12 years
  10. Yes, one of my numpty collegues has applied our ultra secure lockdown policy for terminal services to an entire domain No run, no regedit, no local drives etc. Anyone know of anyway I can get in as an administrator to remove this? the two admin accounts I have both have it applied. I haven't tried logging in locally as I'm 50miles away, any ideas?
  11. Latest ATI Catalyst drivers are fine, aren't omega drivers quite outdated now? I'd personally go for a Radeon 4670 with 1GB on board for that price range
  12. Hey all, Found an off issue with one of our servers today, events being logged at several dozen a second, but none are actually errors. Mostly (99%) are "information" in the various sections. Any idea how to reduce this? I can filter them out but I'd rather just not have them getting logged as a vast majority of the information is frankly useless if we had any issues anyway! I did notice, just before I left that the server was still on server 2003 SP1, so I might get SP2 on it tomorrow morning.
  13. Cheers mate, thought I'd be able to but was a tad worried about bandwidth, guess it doesn't matter either way where the server is as it'll have to do it either locally or via our internal networks which both work over the same connections obviously. When I've got time I might actually get 5mins to sit down and organise the whole thing, before my boss turns it into a project that lands on my desk
  14. Hi guys, I'm just curious, had some problems with windows updates applying that we dont' want at the moment and looking for a way of controlling it. We've got 50+ Server 2003 domains scattered across many, many buildings, some with 10Mb connections, others just on 1Mb broadband. What I was hoping to do was have a central WSUS server that could control the updates for all sites, is that feasable (at least in theory?) The alternative as I see it is to have the local domain server handle WSUS, only problem I see there is having to monitor/manage 50+ servers as the domains are all separate.
  15. Afternoon all, I'm wanting to edit ACL on some folders and subfolders/files, purely to add the user to the list with change permissions and ensure the domain admins group is also in there with full control. I assumed the code below would work but it won't. Username is the same as the folder name, problem I'm having as it simply won't run it from a batch file, goes off in a mood. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm fairly sure I did something similar last year without problems! for /D %%i in (*) do ( subinacl /file %%i /grant=mydomain\%%i=C "/grant=mydomain\domain admins=f" /setowner=mydomain\%%i subinacl /subdirectories %%i\* /grant=mydomain\%%i=f "/grant=mydomain\domain admins=f"/setowner=mydomain\%%i )
  16. I hate to say it guys but I doubt the tories will make a better job of it, fact is it's global issues that are affecting us, not UK ones. The tories won't be able to do any more and since nobody seems to know what their policies are and how they'll fund them I actually think they'll just make it worse. P.S. I don't support either party!
  17. I don't see the point in dividing the tech award into two age groups, it's quite demeaning to younger techs as it'll be seen as a "junior" award. Simply have a runner up for "best tech". I'd back a "worst" of each category too, including a bloopers award for person making the largest mistake of the year
  18. What application? Otherwise you'll probably never get an answer.
  19. It should be called: How to freeze your HDD to recover data and 2 or 3 other tips that might work. It's a long way from 200!

    NT Backup

Sounds like it's trying to compress already compressed files and making a bloody awful job of it, or it's got a million tiny files eating up the space. NT Backup itself is awful basic, you'd be far better off with Veritas etc.
  21. cheers guys, got it all sorted for reference this is what I used: Control.exe TIMEDATE.CPL,,/Z (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time : Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
  22. Anyone know of a way to set the timezone on PCs using the login script? I can't use VB or group policies (I won't go into it - lets just say I want to but been told I can't). I've seen a few examples online but they're for US timezones - anyone actually got this working in the UK? Sadly I can't test this much, need it working pretty much perfectly first time!

    Wii PES08

On the wii it's pretty good, I'm use to PES from the PS2 and PC though and it was a shock at just how different the control system is. It does work though, but you have to practice and can't just throw the controllers to a mate and have a game if he/she hasn't played it before. Once you get the hang of the controls it's outstanding though, being able to move/pass and control half your team is just great fun, it's very, very rewarding and near impossible to just run up and shoot from the same spot, with the same angle and score every time!

    Wii Fit

Got mine on saturday, lots of fun although the yoga doesn't really like me much! Pretty good fun so far, just hope they bring out full titles that utilise it as it's a great piece of kit and works beautifully. Bit humiliating when it weighs you and changes your "wii mii" into what looks like Matt Lucas though.
  25. cheers mate I'll look into it!
