Hi all Having a slight issue with one of my users, ultimately I just want to set the file locations for office using group policy - I know I can download ADMs for this but has anyone ever actually done this? Got a few versions of office too which is slightly worrying!

I used this bootdisk in the past, worked a treat Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

Anyone else noticed the number of people nominated and who won that were from the "brit academy" ? No doubt they'll claim that it's not biased but surely it can't help but look a bit suss?

I ditched Tiscali, did a lot of research and ended up with IDNET, can't be happier. They're not the cheapest but promise never to do traffic management/shaping and frankly gaming pings, download speeds are awesome. They also got me 6.5meg broadband, even though I'd been on less than 1meg with Tiscali - who tried twice to increase it and failed. Month by month contract, change over from Tiscali went smoothly, took 3 working days and the outage was less than 2 hours

Why not just use a video sender? they're wireless. Got mine from Lidl of all places a couple of years ago, Maplin probably still sell them.

Cheers peeps I had the impression this was something that was growing legs quickly and frankly she was being screwed over about.

MY other half has been asked to "make a database" at work, now seeing as she's had no training or experience in doing so she's assuming that they want it done in MS access. However they've now said that they want to be able to edit, add, remove details as and when they see fit, use it in mail merges but have it easy to use (hinting at a front end). Surely this is beyond "make a database" and would really be needing a developer of some kind to do? They way my good wench described it to me they want it to flag up all sorts of information depending on who you click on - it's more of an application accessing a database than anything straight forward! eg if you click on joe bloggs name - it'll tell you what organisation he works for and list alternative contact people etc. and projects he's worked on in the past. I've told her to get them to list everything they want to do with this database as in all honesty I think it's the usual case of what the user wants being far removed to what their work can offer as they don't have the expertise or software available to do it. Thoughts anyone?

life after education so far - given the tools to do the job, given the workspace I need, given the training I need and working with skillful, enthusiastic and HAPPY I.T. staff. What a turn around, utterly loving it. I'm even based in a brand new office and about 10 miles from my boss - who told me today that he's call me now and then but would rarely see me unless I had a problem I wanted to talk to him face to face about.. Utterly magic I'm on two certificated training courses now, starting next year

To qualify my "apple are a waste of money" comment I made earlier that the mac fans have picked up on let me point a few things out. I own a mac, I've repaired macs for 15 years and I do think they're good. I do not however think they're value for money, ever. When we used macs intially we had only one mac reseller up here, we used them and they abused our trust, being in central scotland there really is only one place that you can go to, that you could get warranty repairs done and very few places we were allowed (by the council) to purchase apple hardware for repairs (logic boards etc). We found ALL mac hardware to be more expensive, not only to buy but to repair after warranty and numerous software issues which were never, ever dealt with professionally by apple. In short the service we got from apple and the resellers was awful, partly down to them being rip-off merchants, partly down to the councils then stupid rules about purchasing and also down to apples utterly disgraceful customer care. I will never, ever advice a company to purchase from apple in the future unless we can get cast iron written guarantees regarding SLAs both in and out of warranty from resellers and apple themselves and we'd only look at that if we couldn't get cheaper computers from Dell, Compaq etc. Apples have their place, but right now they're still not feasable in large installations, support both hardware and software is still too far behind Dell etc unless you run Windows on them and hope your hardware never develops any sort of problem.

Well I must admit when I walked out of the school tonight I felt everything lift off my shoulders, such relief! I just wish I could get stuck into that great big bottle of JD that I have in the kitchen, but sadly my car is in for a service tomorrow at 8am, so no rest or alcohol for me

Isnt' it usually booze, blackjack and hookers? according to Bender off Futurama

We don't buy Apple anymore, did for 5 years - biggest waste of money.

Simple fact is they don't want or need a desktop, it's low end editing. I agree it's better on a desktop, always will be but the department want it to be portable, hence the laptop. Apart from that they simply don't have the budget for anything more - hell I had to go begging cap in hand to get them an extra £200 so they could afford a laptop!

Natural selection comes to mind, the problem is we've rescued him, so no doubt he'll manage to kill himself or someone else by doing something else stupid later on in life!

Yeah been a lot of good will towards me leaving *in general* there's always a few who get a bit childish but most of the staff are genuinely happy. I'm moving to the NHS and taking a serious step up the IT career ladder - only applied for the job for interview experience and never in a million years expected to be offered it
-
Well it's my last day at work in the school today, I'm both sad (genuinely) and releaved. The only real reason I'm leaving is because of "single status" our pay review that I know is still happening in England, essentially I was screwed over by it and frankly was too insulted to appeal when I knew I could earn more by moving employer. There's always ups and downs when working in schools but I have to admit it's been one of the best jobs I've had (and I've only had 3!). I'll continue to post here of course, this site is invaluable, as are the people posting on it - seeing as most of you are slightly unhinged

When did IT techs jobs, stop becoming male dominated?
Halfmad replied to Pottsey's topic in General Chat
our local council has women in the minority by a long way but oddly enough every single one of them is in a promoted post of some kind. I wouldn't mind but you could tell some were promoted over more capable men because of gender. -

72. Feel free to store your personal MP3 collection on our expensive servers, we've got plenty of free space anyway and at least they'll be backed up for when you screw up your own PC. 73. My tools, sorry I meant "our" tools - feel free to borrow them at any time without asking, we're caring, sharing types - heck next time just borrow my car to go home. 74. Leave you're computer logged on, especially when there's pupils around - they can make sure that no dodgy types go near it and trash all of your data. -
I was wrong, found a URL for it: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_a2ca583dedcd86837796111a632efa29a23f4cc0.exe

61. Moved school or retired? Feel free to continue e-mailing me with your personal PC problems or better still drop buy one of my MP style surgeries that I hold in the local community centre on a tuesday evening (6:30-8:30) where I give advice to any Tom, Dick and Harry that has any question even vaguely I.T. related. Free scones and tea will be supplied. -

45. Nag us constantly about that inkjet printer jam, we're not capable of remembering or prioritising workload so it helps to have someone on our backs 24/7. Remind us twice as often if it's something that you probably could do yourself, have done in the past or simply can't be bothered doing. -
