fooby Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 As the title suggests, Do you live in the same room as your servers? and how do you find it? We expanded with more people (and racks) so it was "unmanageable" hehe and got a new room. What about you? What are your experiences? I think all IT techs should not have to work in the same rooms. tosca925 Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 We used to and it was air con as well. Noise became unbearable.............to the point i can still hear the ringing in my hears now.
Ric_ Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 I voted 'no' because 13 of my servers have their own room in the main block, however the backup server and a couple of miscellaneous servers currently live with me in my office.

fooby Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 We used to have some servers in our tech room - same reason - didnt get round to shifting them. Eventually the NM got annoyed at the stereo sound of servers and noisy kids and got rid of them (servers not kids to the rack. fooby

acrobson Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 We do, we have 7 servers inc PDC all on server 2003 as well as with Air con at a constant 14c, it is hell on earth, we are constantly cold. It is great during the summer but the still. We have requested to move as there are 4 of us in this what used to be an old cleaning cupboard however good old management have refused on the basis of there is no more room! They asked us to suggest somewhere that we liked, we suggest 5 places, all of which varied in use, shape and size and they still said no. I believe sick rates would go down massively if we were moved as every other week one of us has the cold! We do get double the visitors during the summer though, just so they can use the air con! Could we build a case on this then?!?!?!
witch Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 In one school I have a nice office with one server in it but enough room to set up tests etc. In the other the server is behind a half wall in the main IT suite. I do tend to sit at it as I have nowhere else to go!
6Foot2 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 We used to until about two years ago. We are now in the old Careers Office next door to the Server Room. I am now in my fourth year of trying to get aiur conditioning into the server room. The cycle goes: Get three quotes and we will install what looks like the best. The quotes arrive and I present them. Much delay [ We will look at this later/ I have lost the quotes have you still go them?/Busy now come back later.....] The summer ends, then I am told " The really hot weather is over now, so we will think about this again next year" This morning I went into the Server Room and the air temperature was over 40 Centigrade. This is not the hottest it has been, I can recall a day last year when it topped 47 Centigrade!
broc Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 3 people with desks, 7 servers, workshop & stores in what used to be an old ICT room housing 20 desktop PCs. Air conditioned (21C) but a bit on the noisy side.

webman Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Yes, we currently do. ~8 servers, 3 workstations, 2 people, sans air conditioning, and 30-40°c heat. Nice We don't mind the noise, and we can just about bare the heat, but we don't think the servers can do any longer Servers are moving in October though

enjay Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Thankfully, no. Space and noise would be an issue if I did. I have a chair in there and will usually work in there when doing updates, but the rest of the time I'm in a separate office next door.
DSapseid Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I voted sometimes as my office is next to the server room but there is no door between just an arch way - need a door on it as the constant drone of 9 servers 5 ups' 6 switches variuos other bits and an aircon unit is unbareable. @DaveP last sumer we had temps of 55+ in the server room in the end we bypassed our line manager who was being tight about bying/hiring one and went to the head and he said yep go an hire one now! Just walk in there and turn a few of the servers off and say that they crashed due to the heat. Do it a few times a day and they will soon get the message!

This is all in a cupboard with no aircon. We're hoping to get aircon in soon because this heat is only going to get worse over the next couple of months...
Butuz Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Yes we are based in our server room currently. A room is being created for me, my techie and a couple of the ofice staff to share - I am really looking forward to no noise of fans and air con!!! Should give us lots more room to work with too! Andrew
plexer Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Our server have been in their own server room for the past 3 years or so which was the old exams officers room. There was allready air con in there but it couldn't cope and I had it changed for a larger one. We have a seperate office upstairs in one of the ict suites for just my techie and I and our pc's etc... Hoping to get another bigger office soon though. Ben

TekkyMatt Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Small room, 9 servers all in one rack, 3 desktops and a hell of a lot of junk, rubbish air-con, window is always open but im high up so its always freezing winds, my weather station says its 11C outside and 15C in here which is ok. Servers are loud and old and slow and old and rubbish and loud. Wheres that union ?
elsiegee40 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 My server "room" is a niche behind the photocopier in the attic! It can't really be described as a room. It gets very hot up there. Fortunately, I have a cupboard-sized office (shared with the Health & Safety manager!) on the first floor which is cooler, if somewhat cramped (Mostly due to all my "useful" things)
