3s-gtech Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I don't need much power for what I do from this workstation, so I've been pretty happy with my: AMD Athlon 4850e 4GB DDR2 800 500GB HDD Foxconn 780G board for the last couple of years. Running Windows 7 Pro x64.

The main things I use my machine for. Several VMware machines Video editing and encoding Photoshop General office and internet Itunes and remote desktop. Usually all at the same time. Which is why I really need to upgrade to an I7 like everyone else.

enjay Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I buy the same as whatever I'm currently buying for other staff or our IT Suites, my needs don't justify any fancy i7 with 16GB RAM, or whatever (although I do have a nice big monitor, which I can justify). I do have a second PC, however, for software installation and testing rather than risk killing my main PC; also allows for useful multi-tasking while installs are running, as I can pop back onto my main PC for the few minutes it takes. As an aside, software-wise, I tend to run a version ahead of everyone else. This practice was invaluable ahead of a Windows 7 and Office 2010 roll-out, as it gave me time to properly familiarise myself with the software and thus offer better support once the roll-out had happened. I will do the same with Office 2012 (or whatever the next incarnation is) and Windows 8. 1
jmcdermott Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Asus i3 laptop with 8gig of ram, is ample for me. Runs multiple rdp/vnc/ssh all at the same time without any problems. And runs COD MW3 for that too short lunch hour.

Could really do with some more ram.... We're always got the fastest PCs in the school, generally rotate ours off to the IT teachers when they become out of date, we replace ours pretty much every 3 years opposed to the usual 5 years, then get at least another 3 years life out of them as teacher PCs. They may be expensive but for the work we do on them it's money well spent, especially considering the amount of time encoding a DVD takes on this compared to my old Q6600 i had previously. To be honest i'd have 4 monitors if i could, i very very rarely ever see my desktop with the amoutn of RDP, internet, VM windows i have open. Edited January 24, 2012 by mrbios

Its the highest spec machine in school I can understand people buying i5s but unless you're video editing or something I really cant see how an i7 is value for money...

I've got a Q6600 with 4Gb of RAM (and I only upgraded that from 2Gb for a VM I was testing) in a dodgy old RM build, because I can't bring myself to foist it off on anyone else. What do the rest of you lot use all those fancy pants i7s for? If I was regularly encoding video for the school I might consider an upgrade, but anything else, I can just deal with it being slow. There's other things needs the money!
