That same quote posted further up the page:

Have just seen a local complaining about "police heavy-handedness" in the incidents in Leeds just after an article in the main news about people complainig the police were too lienient.

This goes a long way to explain the difficulty for police chiefs and the government.

In other news I suspect what we really need is a spell of bad weather. I can't imagine a lot of the yoofs being out in 10 degree wind and rain

And now some general rambling that I am getting off my chest. :)

Talking tonight we think that there a lot of people feel entitled to stuff. A lot of reality shows offer a quick shortcut to fame and money, people see that an then get frustrated and feel they are owed. they want the £500 smart phone and the huge LED tv but don't feel they should have to work for it.

There also seems to be a lack of work ethic. I refuse to believe there are no job prospects, just jobs people are not prepared to do because they feel it's "beneath" them. They want to start on the big money and that's not how it works. My sister in law lives reasonably comfortably. Both her and her husband left school after a-levels and got rubbish jobs, lived in a small house and worked their way to where they are now. I sometimes feel that ethic seems to have got lost.

I accept that a lot of that was generalisation and probably not true for the majority of society but I felt a need to get it off my chest.

warning: broad sweeping generalizations will follow.

i think anybody involved in this riot should just be shot with a taser, dragged to the police station and unceremoniously chucked in the cells.

I'm not going to apologize for my opinion. There is no reason for anybody to be involved other than pure criminal activity. 99% of the rioters don't know or care about the cause. The police should just knock these twunts down and cuff them. They shouldn't have any rights, they shouldn't be able to hide behind 'wrong place wrong time' crap.

I blame parents. If parents brought their kids up properly they wouldn't even dream of rioting. If you're a parent of someone who is out at night during these riots then you clearly know they are involved. I am a parent and would not let my children out at night.

This is going to cost thousands to put right and you can guarantee that none of the morons involved are going to be charged for the damage.

And then what? You've dealt with the riots, and now have thousands of teenagers in jail, so what do you do with them? In prison I'm pretty sure they'll cost more per person than if they were on benefits. When they serve their sentences you've got a bunch of voiceless, disenfranchised, young people with criminal records and no chance of a job.

I don't know what the cause of these riots is, and why these kids have decided to attack people, destroy buildings, and lose their respect for the law, but as a society we need to know, so we can start to put it right. If it is the parents, which it may well be, how do we put that right?

I know its good that they're trying to prosecute them now but how many positive ids do you think they'll get?

I'm sure at least 75% of them were wearing hoodies, tracksuit bottoms and trainers. That's not exactly a unique description :p

For most of the pictures in my post above you can see full or partial faces

I'm in full agreement with everyone on here that says about tazering, tranquilizing or just trunceoning this mindless morons. The trouble is when they get to court most of them will get a slap on the wrist and sent on their merry way.

Maybe all those convicted of a riot related crime should be conscripted for a couple of years. Seeing as how it is a punishment they would only have to be paid the bare minimum. The forces are being cut back all the time, maybe this is a cost effective way to bolster it. A couple of stints in Helmand Province might make these dickheads think again.

I just can't believe the whole irony of the events. Here we have many youths complaining about funding cuts, and lack of job prospects, yet here they are burning down potential employers and making the government spend even more money that we simply don't have.

The prisons are over crowded, so why not round them all up on a ship like we did years ago and deport them - let them work for themselves and see if they can make a better job of things. I know for certain that if I'd have urinated on my mam and dads back door step I would have been out, why not the same for these morons? Only thing is, there's not much land left to populate - I hear mars is nice this time of year, nice and hot :)

It isn't that easy, if your son is twice your size and aggressive, how are you supposed to keep him in? I know someone who brought their son up properly but he has gone right off the rails, got in with the wrong crowd. They just feel helpless now.

Proper discipline, its all well and good saying he was bought up properly, but if he was he would have a set of right and wrongs. Nothing wrong with Corporal Punishment in my opinion. If I stepped out of line I got a smack, simple as, same goes for my daughter. I know its easier said than done but if the discipline is instilled early enough it will last a lifetime!

I think after this all NEET's should be made to do National Service.

I wouldn't trust someone like that behind me with a loaded weapon! The Army needs people who want to enlist, not 'press ganged' kids.

NikChillin - Kids don't pop out as 100lb 6 foot masked gits. The point about parenting is to start showing discipline from the off. How you handle them from early infancy onwards makes a hell of a difference when they're 16.

I have always had the same viewpoint on this - kids should be disciplined properly (a good clip round the ear or smacked backside). Naughty steps and "time out" are complete and utter rubbish. Coppers should be able to clip them round the ear again - same old argument we've had before. Reasonable force. All this rioting rubbish comes from kids who have absolutely no sense of right or wrong and have little to no proper discipline.

Peer pressure though is something else entirely and quite unavoidable :( - it can only be overridden by each individuals willpower and sense of right/wrong.

I think some military discipline would do them good, teach them some respect, failing that community service then. Do two years of education or national/community service when you leave school to qualify for benefits.

Some of them might even enjoy it.
