Forecasted foot of snow hasn't fallen here in my part of the Peninnes - but my school is still closed:-)

Green fields and blue skies here this morning - temperature never got below 1C all night depressed and fed up with Cumbrian weather

Roads are clear here, no snow since yesterday afternoon but still a few staff couldn't make it in. Don't think the HT is overly impressed.

Still had to get up at 6 and get ready though, as I couldn't find out until after 7.

 

It snowed here until about 9pm and then froze. The main roads are fine but they haven't gritted anywhere else and it is like an ice rink out there.

I had a similar start to the day - I'd got dressed for work and was preparing to walk in (as I do everyday - it's only about 3-4 miles) when I got the call.

 

I think the problem is that so many teachers don't live local to the schools they're employed in. I seem to remember the teachers being quite local back when I was in secondary school (almost 20 long years ago!) This is, I imagine, especially true when the school is in a deprived area.

They still do! We had a copy of the regulations sent to all staff the other day, stating that if you could get to the school, be it by foot or any other means, then you should. If you can't you should call another closer school and see if they need help.

Imagine a situation where a stranger turns up at the local primary school and says he's here to teach the little 'uns for a day. You can see why this isn't carried out anymore.

 

I live out of county so that makes it even harder to verify my id :-) We rarely close, and when we do it's usually after I've arrived (like today) so it doesn't matter what we have to do!

 

I would imagine that with a laptop and internet connection more staff (and indeed pupils) can do something constructive from home for a day or two. Well the ones that had the foresight to plan for this anyway...

That's why you have to call first, so they can confirm who you are. Taking ID with you would be a good idea...

As will the technicians, dinner ladies, teaching assistants and cleaners who are unable to make it.

 

For our school the bus companies made the call. We found out that they weren't running - so no pupils. All the lazy teachers made it into school, although not so the rest of the staff ....

Had monday and tuesday off but didnt enjoy it much because I felt like crap.

Well enough to come to work today but now praying it'll be closed tomorrow too, because while Im not so ill I cant work, its very uncomfortable and I cant get anything done with such a heavy head cold

I called our HT because the roads were bad for me and I'm only a mile away. All the other schools are closed but we haven't decided yet. I'm fielding calls from parents and having to say I don't know.

 

If I found the roads dodgy, then there's no way that mamby pamby teachers are going to venture out, so we will have to close. It's still snowing a bit.
