GrumbleDook Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Wife's school is closed and I couldn't get down to the office this morning, or the school I was meant to visit this afternoon (partly because I can't get to it and it was closed anyway) so I have just been catching up on paperwork instead. If tomorrow is like today then I will do sod all work, but I will book it as a holiday so I can enjoy a bit of R&R. Those of us who don't have to be in an office to do a chunk of our job don't really notice about the bad weather ... it is only frustrating when I need to meet someone, get access to some files off the computer system (please don't mention remote access ... I have no control over Corporate IT systems and would not want it anyway) or simply want to get out of the house! Off to wrap up warm and take a walk to the shops with my better half.
Sirbendy Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 (edited) We're closed in Telford Today. Was open yesterday. Got a text at 7am saying "closed", so went back to bed. HATE driving in it. The roads out here are untreated. Total ballache. It's still snowing sort of...almost like drizzle. Meh. Looks like it's melting a bit though. Very pretty, very "proper UK winters like when I were a lad", shame of it is now I'm all grown up I have to drive in it. poo. That said, I looked at chains 2 years ago when I almost didn't get home...never seen the socks before though...I don't quite see how they'd work..the chains cut into the compacted snow to grip..the socks do it via friction...hmm..I'd love to see a snowy hill side by side demo... Mind you..£50? For a useable lifetime of...quite a lot? Bit of a bargain there..might be worth a punt. The whole "running out of grit" thing sums up my opinion of councils. Shoot the damn lot of them and appoint sensible people to the posts who are in touch with reality. Not enough grit? Psh. Where are the ploughs and road clearers I recall from my youth? Sold off for cash I'd bet. Just because we had a 15 or so year break from "normal" winters. If the BBC are right (reckon this is "cyclic" and will be like this for a few years or so), get them back. We pay road tax, we pay rates, we pay for bloody everything in this country and where is it going? not on the bloody road infrastructure, I can say that much. Total TWB. Don't get me wrong, a day off is nice. The missus walked into her work, but doesn't work fridays. If we're closed tomorrow as well, fine. Today, I would have quite liked to get a machine, desk and whatnot setup for my new assistant tech, starting monday. Poor lad's going to be lumbered with a 256mb Ergo Ensis at this rate. Yuk. Luckily, 95% the work in the helpdesk system outstanding can be done remotely over VPN, which is what I shall do. Edited February 5, 2009 by Sirbendy

DrCheese Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 We're open today after being closed yesterday. If anything tho it's worse than yesterday! But the main roads are properly gritted today so staff/students have managed to get in for the most part.
localzuk Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Pretty much all roads into minehead are blocked or impassable. Other schools are pretty much all closed, except us. In since 7:30, answering phones, and organising things. Absolute chaos so far. And we've only got 150 of 620 kids in.

DrCheese Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 We're now closing, the weather report for this morning was "Rain at 6, clear by 9" Instead it's just snowed all morning. I've completely lost faith in weather reporting over the last few days. I know it's not an exact science but they've been completely wrong virtually every time, or update so often it's useless trying to plan anything

LeMarchand Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I think in its way that's a perfectly justifiable reason to want to take your kid out of school. It snows rarely enough that it is somewhat of a special occasion, if I could get away with taking a day off I probably would, but I don't have any kids. Sorry to come back to this so late, but was telling Mme LeMarchand about this and she pointed out that as a teacher they probably took plenty of expensive holidays to snowbound places (or could afford to if the "snow experience" was so important) so maybe not such a good reason?
