OutToLunch Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Using CensorNet software version 3.3r6 (updated 05/12/2005) here quite happily - regularly 100+ days uptime, generally only lost to extended power outages. All the extra patches from the support site applied. What issues are you having?

Because I am too lazy to apply kernel updates I have had 350-day *connection* uptimes on my home smoothie! Only a powercut/cheap UPS prevented me hitting the 1 year mark. Currently: [root@sandcastle root]# uptime 09:22:22 up 313 days, 12:03, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.02, 0.01

Very easy to setup if you follow the instructions and can be installed on an oldish server as well.

If anything smoothwall is too powerful and feature rich so you can get a bit lost but it is a great solution. Support are great. My usb stick might be like the real person though as it's a bit legless one fell off.
RinSewand Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Well we were using Censornet which, yes, is about as stable as a very unstable thing in high winds balancing on a large sphere rolling down a hill.... Now have Smoothwall and it's excellent. It is very feature rich but once you get used to where to find what you want, it has pretty mcuh anything you want - plus any feedback usually gets incorporated straight back into the product. It's also got the rather impressive flash filter, and is the only solution that's BECTA approved iirc from other threads. Used to use Smoothwall 1/2 at home, got several 200 day uptimes with that. We use a Sophos WS1000... it's OK, it's just not that flexible. We have used a CachePilot, that was dire++ OpenDNS is a potentially free option but not very customisable & not really a filter but offers some filtering.

Until late this let week we had some issues with filtering by Ldap syncronization with Active Directory, but after some time on the phone with their tech support folks, it's working very well. We migrated from Smoothwall.

CensorNet Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Hi Runcmd I just wanted to say, which is hopefully useful to other members, that CensorNet v3.x hasn't been updated since 2006. It is end of life and no longer in development as an open source project. There is a migration path to the new version if people are interested. There are still many people that use it and we have kept the web site live for reference and historical reasons. It is based on an old version of Debian which no longer receives security updates so it should not be used in production if at all possible. Kind regards, Tim
