soveryapt Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Does technology like this REALLY improve lessons though? Can you say that people educated before computers had a worse education? Are they currently unable to speak to eachother due to lack of blogging ability? I think not. I do think though, that we are raising children today, to be shut away from REAL human contact and are instead relying on technology to fill the gap IE. instant messenger and those terrible voting systems that I keep hearing about... what is wrong with a show of hands these days??!?!? Quite honestly how is a graphical tablet going to improve the education of anyone apart from Steve Job's children.... Good point well made and I'm in agreement, I was just saying that the iTouch usage would surely be better on something with a decent screen size such as the iPad. We have 2 sets of voting system things here, and only one gets used on an adhoc basic because of the time it takes to set things up like that. My thing and interest is more in the internet browsing function of them, in that you can get a set in a classroom, the kids can share them fairly easily. I think that ICT enhances learning, but only when used correctly by the correct people, it doesn't always make for a better education and that's not something I would ever say it did, apart from when the use of ICT helps someone (and I apologise if this comes over non-pc) who hasn't got the ability to perform normal functions perform as a person who has, Professor Stephen Hawking being one such example.

The pen was free - as long I did not mind the advertising of 'DataCore' in big letters on the side....

The Register How the hell can you make that any smaller without compromising the point? I'm sure there's loads of devices of products Apple are going to release 1/2/3+ years out there being secretly tested. This iPad is such a rich boys toy. Shame it won't have any practical use for business/true educational use being tied down to the iPhone OS. Money on someone hacking it and forcing Android on it? That's something I'd pay for .

Apple certainly has the ability to excite people with great products, and with the iPhone they even managed to generate momentum for an entire product category. Michael Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 It all looks very nice and interesting, but who is the product marketed for? Apple haven't been clear on this at all. With no clear strategy it can only go one way unfortunately.
Tallwood_6 Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 I actually quite like it for what i'd use it for i.e surfuing the web/reading emails in the the living room, watching movies, reading books music etc in bed and generally will have a better battery life than a full on laptop and better screen than a netbook. The hardware itself doesnt look powerful enough to run OSX, linux etc or at least without some impact on battery life so the OS looks like a sensible option plus you undeniably get a good selection of applications within the app store. I think much like the orginal iphone it will come of age with the second generation and once developers get some good apps out designed solely for the device.

Wow it can go on the internet and is probobly a pain for typing in urls etc. Yeah I agree , it's like a crippled iphone with a large screen that costs more and I have an iphone ( there are some things that they could improve on the iphone ie bluetooth profiles , cheaper sat nav apps etc ) They should name it something along the lines of iLack original ideas. Personally I would much rather just get a mac book pro and if need be a 3G dongle of some description. Dom Joly isn't too fond of it. And he got in there quick. That was brilliant !!
Optics Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 I'm pretty tempted to be honest, I can see it fitting in with the way my wife and kids would like to use the net, control the room to room music, check their mail quick etc. They dont want macbooks or even netbooks for that matter, they consider them too much hassle. I'm off to the US at the start of April for a few days, so I might pre-order one.

Must admit yes i love my iphone and macbook .. i resisted upgrading my iphone last year so the money that i'll was going to spend on the ipad i'll use to pay for the new iphone that will hopefully be coming out. Sorry to confuse you replaced my G5 Power Mac with Quad core pc running Vista (now win 7) but obviously kept the 30inch Cinema display

psydii Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 My 2 penneth: With the right apps these would be so much better than a fleet of netbooks. Apps that hook into the xml feeds of MLEs, and save student work to the VLE. Apps that hook into MIS's ARD on the teachers macbook that can project a student iPad onto the IWB. WiFi only and if they are MS Exchange enabled pretty much totally securable by the host site. These really could be it, certainly for the 16Gb Wifi only one if the above can be made true and they cost in pounds what the dollar price suggests they ought.
