Stuart_C Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I was wondering who out there does or doesn't use their .sch.uk domain name? Being an indipendent shcool we are not tied into "having" to do anything so I was wondering who out there used theirs, and if not what were you using and why? The reason for my question is someone has got the head worked up about chaning our domain name (right AFTER we've had new prospectuses and a website created ). I really don't like the idea I prefer that we can be identified as a school. so I was canvassing opinions.

mb2k01 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 This question was left up to me to decide a while back (we are state funded etc, but like to rebel occasionally!) I decided to keep the sch.uk address - It makes sense as everyone knows how to get you and instantly recognises you as the offical site of a UK school. We do still have .com, .co.uk and .net addresses which serve other purposes and either link to the main site or stay dormant. It gives us the flexibility to use differently and also have mail aliases / catch-all rules etc. The inital reason for the large buy-up of domains was that we didn't want anyone else to get hold of them!

The school domains can be very long ours being johnspence.n-tyneside.sch.org.uk try getting your staff to remeber that one is impossible. So we opened the second domain and redirected to the school domain making it easier johnspence.org.uk.
p858snake Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 You should be able to point the new/old to domain to where you want without effecting anything. For example you could have it so: * User A connects from something.sch.uk and it stays like that and have User B connect from something.co.uk and have it stay * Or have it so that one of those domains is automagicaly changed for the user without them doing anything (shouldn't break email)
Soulfish Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We currently use our .sch.uk domain, but are slowly transitioning over to using a .com domain we've recently purchased. People were complaining that email address' were just too long - which they were. Much much shorter now, and people stand a chance of remembering them! We also have the .net,.co.uk,.org,.org.uk versions of the domain. All variations of the domain work for email, together with the .sch.uk domain although we are now starting to push using the .com.

dayzd Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We use our .sch.uk address. Staff sometimes find it difficult to remember, but there's never been any talk of getting it changed to make life easier. It's not all that long anyway - nowhere near as bad as some I've seen!

Batman Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We use our .northants.sch.uk address, doesn't cause too many issues although we do occasionally get staff asking us to remind them of their email addresses, too many dots I think. Some suppliers don't quite get it either... I'm still waiting for a quote I asked for this morning, I suspect it got sent to nowhere.
Mako Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We do. Nice, free hosting with php support. No SMTP though, so no contact forms would work, but no big deal. If staff can't remember the full address, I tell them to google the school name as we show up #1. Simples.

DrCheese Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We use a .org.uk address for everything, we have a .sch.uk address but it's stupidly long, schoolname(full).lea.sch.uk A real pain to tell people over the phone and to remember. If we could just have our initalslike we have now and .sch.uk then it wouldn't matter so much. We would kick up a massive fuss if the LEA moaned at us to change it.
