hey ppl

i was just wondering if anybody out there in education is using logmein free in a controlling mode for the classrooms or is there anything maybe better or simpler then it.

the reasin i ask is, because we're having a new pa system installed, and i want to giv teachers the options of ringing my office to say my whiteboard has died and i need you now. rather me having to trek half my life across the school, is there a program that let me log in to her pc and help her out???

Yeah i would also look at RealVNC and remotly support the machine internally rather than using logmein as that would be an overkill as you would be going out of your building and back in again for no reason what so ever. plus if you internet goes down you wont be able to remotley support the machine.

 

Real VNC, UltraVNC etc way to go :-)

we use logmein on the staff laptops,

that way if they are doing work any where and have a problem (& internet access) you can just log in and fix it

If you want to spend money there's NetSupport School, which I've used in one of my schools - was installed before I became the Tech and just priced it up for another school! OWCH!

 

The other option that seems to work for me is iTalc which is an OpenSource thing. You can set up classrooms and the like. Fairly easy to deploy too which is nice. Just sits on the icon bar until they call you.

 

The NetSupport Package is by far the better option if you have money to spend on this as you can set it to allow help supports, which means teacher is stuck, teacher presses HELP button, you get a notice on your NetSupport Console, you can chat to that client and even take control all with a few clicks.

I use purgos on all desktops it has a remote control option, will install from the console. Don't use it on the staff laptops as if they have a problem I will go to the machine and try to talk the teacher through it (small school obviously not that practical in large school)

i vaguely remember using vnc along time ago, but i also remmebr that when i had to set it up , i had to go to each machine , install it and also allow access to the windows firewall ports. i will give italc a try and see how it runs, i have about 300 machines, i install alot of the software through msi's form AD but on some of the older sherston stuff it requires a local copy install so the disc doesnt have to be inserted, i wouldve done all the machiens on a perfect ghost but that would be pointless for year groups not in use of the software

VNC is the way to go I think on this occasion...

 

If you have experience of deploying software via GPO's may I suggest you create an MSI using this: Download VNCed from SourceForge.net. It works well to create the MSI to your custom settings (.e.g hiding the icon ).

 

I use this in conjunction with my own (did nick another schools for a while..where I got the idea from ... opportunity to further my programming skillS!) custom AD application to control PCs (still in development ... writing a whole room view at the mo!) to pick out the right room for VNC

i will give italc a try and see how it runs, i have about 300 machines,

 

Install the iTalc on your machine and export the key, install it on a local machine and import the key and then tell it to save the install settings then you can use a startup script via GPO to install it. Takes about 10seconds on each boot (I could run checks to see if it is installed already I guess, but 10seconds isn't a huge problem at the mo).

 

Loads of useful help in the iTalc Wiki (Main Page - iTALC-Wiki) about deploying that way.

 

It works, just can occassionally be a bit clunky if you use it to monitor a lot of machines (you can screen dump from it if you need that kind of facility to prove students messing about etc) but it works well.

We use netsupport

 

I don't recommend using logmein due to their personal licensing.

 

Especially as it shows when you are in control & it can easily be closed =)

I use skeep just install the main app on you machine and you can remotely install the vnc instance on any machine that is in your domain.

Logmein is good to go from home to your office PC but not for in and around the school because you want to stay in you network and not go out to the internet and back in again.

Yeah I've used AB Tutor before. Also used Range Remote Control and NetOp School.

 

AB Tutor is good because you only need to buy the Tutor license and have to worry about buying a license for the student machines.

I support the suggestions for RealVNC. It's simple, easy to setup and very discrete. However like you said, you have to install it on each machine.

 

An alternative that I've used is Teamviewer. I suspect it would be better for accessing more remote sites in the same way as logmein does though.
