sdc Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Hi everyone Happy New Year! We used to order HP 6720s laptops and have had no problems with them. Now HP have replaced this model with the 6735s, which is similar in most ways, but has had some cosmetic changes and some chipset modifications. Anyway.... we can't Ghost them. We have three, and have successfully built one to use as a source image; but Ghost just won't "see" the hard disk. We've tried going to IDE mode in the BIOS (disabling SATA native mode) but with no success. Any thoughts or suggestions?! Many thanks Stephen
LeMarchand Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Is there a "compatibility" mode in the BIOS? Had a similar problem with some Tosh's and that sorted it out. (Though I suspect that compatibility and IDE modes are pretty much the same).
sdc Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Unfortunately not. It's clearly "all new" - a fancy GUI bios, with a mouse pointer and buttons! Yes, thought of trying that - but the laptops already have the latest version. As for using a different imaging system, I suspect that may be the only solution (at least for now) - which is a bit of a pain, really, as we currently have every model of machine Ghosted onto a NAS server, and we've built our own custom USB bootstick that enables us to go to any machine and reimage it - so no large collection of boot disks, CDs, etc.

PeterW Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Walkthrough: Create a Custom Windows PE Image Have a look at this, off the top of my head (really rough) you will need to do something like Create a PE image and mount it Inject the mass storage and lan drivers copy in ghost32 amend startnet.cmd? to lauch ghost unmount image and put it on wds or usb flash cd etc Or something like that 1
Trapper Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I've just had the same problem with some 6735b's. Our old version of Ghost (8.0) did not work with these machines. Solution Suite 2 does. However you have to load the Win PE first, and then load Ghost from the command prompt as PeterW has said. The Ghost boot disc wizard can do this automatically for you. 1

BatchFile Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 After using a variety of imaging methods (from taking-the-hard-drive-out-and-sticking-it-in-another-PC up) including Ghost, I've just started using Windows PE and Imagex... it's basically like DOS but with network support and boots from a USB pen or CD - I create a batch file to format c:, map the drive and then deploy the image - works really well and you don't have to go digging for DOS drivers:)

The WinPE boot disk creation wizard which comes with Ghost did indeed create a nice bootable USB stick, but that still won't play ball. (I think this time though it's the network rather than the hard disk.) Ah well, another little project for next week, I guess!!

If your clients support PXE it would also mean the end to requiring boot disks/sticks all together as it will boot of the network and offer you a nice 32bit network enabled Windows command prompt to play with. 1

Tony_Mc Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 We use BartPE with "snapshot" this works really well for us and is REALLY fast, build a machine over the network in about 5-6mins + config time of about 10-12mins
Daleus Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I find that if I can't see a hard drive with PE or Ghost I turn to PING (Partimage is Not Ghost) which is a free (beer) Linux ghost clone which seems to be able to detect a lot of different media. IMO it seems to be a little slower than ghost (minutes though, not significant) but works just as well.

We have images of all of our other machines, but of course these are more difficult. I see the use of different switches and such, is there a tutorial on how and where to input these? we are using Ghost Console, and would like to not have to vist the machines once they are deployed Thank in advance! Not long got FOG up and running (in a ubuntu VM (works great)) HP 7400 and 6735s work fine with FOG (yep another plug for it) as long as you change the bios settings for SATA.... scuppered on the 6715 tho BSOD on boot... I suspect its the SATA/IDE mode but theres no bios setting on these (on latest bios). Edited August 20, 2009 by Theblacksheep
