Michael I have this enabled anyway due to the fact these netbooks are pants. Our full size laptops seem fine. Another great suggestion though for anyone who might have missed it. Update! Seem to have settled it quite a bit, I consolidated quite a bit of stuff into one single policy and this seems to have helped for now. Unfortunately I will have to wait until tomorrow to hear any feedback. Thanks for all your great suggestions!

No, they login quite quick! really hoped this could have been it, unfortunately the netbooks already have a static local DNS server address set. It may be worth changing them to another DNS server though they all use a secondary DNS server opposed to our primary one. Thanks Brpilot this might be be a good idea you've given me!

Hi everyone! Can not figure this one out for the life of me. Windows 7 Pro 32bit netbook clients. When a user logs in they (80% of the time) have no desktop icons. I first chalked this down to spotty wifi but a few things lead me to believe the wifi isn't at fault.. I have the desktops assigned per user and they work every time if the clients are connected via an ethernet cable. Even though they have no desktops the assigned drives are still there and work fine, no drop outs. same for internet. If the icons do appear they can either be 100% fine or greyed out with a small cross on them. (offline files?) Refreshing does nothing. 'Show Desktop Icons' is enabled on the clients desktop context menu Is it worth assigning a network drive to the 'desktop' folder on the network and then just changing policy so that desktops are loaded from Z:\ or whatever? the network drives never seem to be offline so this may be an easy fix - but surely the behaviour they are showing isn't normal? Thanks for any insight.

Nevermind - fixed it. Plugged it in via the Promethan Board's secondary input (box on the wall) and that does not have the same issue - did not try this earlier as did not have access to it when class was full of kids.

(Not sure if right subcategory, but hey..) Hi guys. Promethean board (AcitvBoard to be precise) connected to a PC via COM - this works perfect with the pen. However the attached USB mouse does not, when moved it will always jump back to the spot where the pen last touched the activboard (and equally if the pen has not touched the board since powering the PC on then it will not do this weirdness). I have tried completely removing the drivers for the activboard and reinstalling, on a side note this began happening about a month after putting in a few promethean power supply. If I pull the power out of the promethean while it is doing this then it will work correctly until I plug it back in and touch the pen to the board. tl;dr - Mouse cursor always flys back to last point the pen touched. Any suggestions? thanks.

You're totally right that it is a bit wrong, I think I have been very lucky to fall into a position where I am appreciated, treated right and that I actually enjoy doing.

What about the netgear they gave you for free with the 50Mb? mine's been fine so far to say it's netgear. The web management part of it is horrendously slow though.

5 full time servers + 200+/- machines (desktops / mainly laptops) + 60 netbooks per year (4,5,6 - on a lease-to-own) for the kids so they keep them when they leave year 6. I also look after all software, peripherals and the network and any other equipment really (except photcopiers). I'm on my own here, and I find it to be a good number. I created a fantastic method to keep the dirty layer (netbooks) in check, which eased my job so much as they were a pain to maintain! However I am employed AS a techie, not a teaching assistant - so evidently it changes from school to school and from job to job. (MCA/DST, A+, N+ blah blah blah)

Currently not having a home for my servers (and having them dotted around the site) is doing my fruit. Our PDC is IN the ICT Suite, where fingers can touch it. Fingers that are not attached to *my* hands...It's gutting.

Make a bat script to run with echo off, bung it in her startup folder - make it wait 10 minutes (or so) and then make it dump output from ipconfig, nslookup, ping and any other data into text files. Next time she comes to you, just take a look see what's going on. She does not even have to know about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but does it not mention on the policy description that it can be either C:\back.jpg or \\svr\share\back.jpg. You could try it and apply it to a test machine? Would be quite useful to know as our new Windows 7 machines are getting black backgrounds and this would be a super easy way to change them if required.

I thought I was going mad! I keep hearing this when using Remote Desktop to our Sophos server, it's also happening on my laptop too, I presumed it was something to do with Windows 7. Glad to know I'm not mad.

Hey Marvin. Surely if you are buying more than 1, the laptops will be imaged anyway? thus bypassing having to 'downgrade' the rest of the machines (apart from the first one?) I havn't seen any with just XP, just as you say with the XP Pro 'downgrade' option.

We attempted it. Awful. Pain in the coxics to manage. In the end I used nircmd (invisible cmd) to download contents of a network 'control' folder and execute "control.vbs" which then runs any associated files or commands or anything. They do this at every boot. So as long as it is something I can change with .vbs or .bat I can do it when they restart their machines. Crude - but McGyver would be proud...infact no he wouldn't - it's awful.
