No idea on a 64 bit driver. But I'd be interested to know where you got a x86 version that works with Win 7

Thanks. I didn't think there would be any official guide lines But that is the sort of rule of thumb I was looking for!! Going by most of our classrooms there are not really any desks further forward than the projector anyway, just the odd one or two.

A staff member has expressed a concern that the front row of desks in a classroom are too close to the whiteboard - a 78" Promethean and the front row is about 6 foot away, and I would agree with him. I think it's more of a case of pupils "drifting" the desks about the room during the day than the classroom actually being set up like that. But does anyone know of any published guidelines or recommendations on the minimum distance for a board of this size??

There doesn't seem to be any obvious BIOS settings but 13 of the 15 do have an accessable lid switch, which could be an option - but the other 2 are hidden inside. I seem to remember reading that some of the professional cabs allow them to be updated whilst closed, but can't remember if it mentoned that there were only certain laptops that allow it or some software was involved? I like the option of shelfs and data points but that sort of space is limited in that part of the school for us. Any other ideas would be good

Just wondering how people store and more importantly update their laptops? Appologies if this has been covered, I have looked but not really found the answer I want. We have a bank of 15 for our science dept, which are not always used daily sometimes it can be a week or so between usage. And obviously they build up a number of updates which all install when they are switched on, bringing to me teachers and pupils moaning about how slow they are. We can't afford any form of laptop trolley so that is out of the question. They are currently stored in the ol' school trays in a cupboard. Plugging them in to charge is not a problem and I can connect them to the network whilst they are in storage, but can't WOL and update tham when they are closed But has anyone ever built their own? That will allow them to update the laptop whilest the lid is closed? Any suggestions would be welcome!!!

I would agree with MatthewL especially if you have the 7 - 8 foot tall cabs like we have and especially if they are full from top to bottom. Moving the switches to be in the middle of the patch pannels they connect to will mean much shorter wires and les chance of them getting tangled up with others. It's a problem we have, whenever a new switch is installed it just gets put in the nearest free slot, in most cases the bottom, and more often than not the pannels it will connect to will be near the top meaning long cable runs up and down the length of the cab. So reorganising the cabs in this way will make tham much tieier

Has anybody got a LaCie 5TB LaCie 5big Network 2 and would they recommend it for secondary school use as pupils folder storage. The server is almost full so we need to move it all somewhere! 750 odd pupils 250-270 PCs

I have WOL working over the network on Gigabit capable Cisco switches (I forget the model as I don't have them to hand right now) When the ports are set at 100Mbps WOL works perfectly. But when the ports are switched to 1000Mbps WOL fails every time I'm using MC-WOL for the magic packet and the clients will accept it when the port is set at 100Mbps but not 1000Mbps. And I can't see any settings that are different for the NICs when set to auto 1000. The option for Magic packet is there and enabled both on the NIC in windows and in the bios. Any thoughts anyone?

A bit of an update on this. It will now happen with Serif software. The error messages given by serif are much more brief but it is the same problem. A corrupt file. @DMcCoy, Cheers for that it is something to look into, I am aware the server does run a bit slow at times. But I don't see how that would only affect this one room still. Thats the strangest bit of it, it happens very occasionally in other rooms but a couple of times a day now in this one particular room. Which Is perhaps leading me to think It could be GPO related or one of the extra bits of software this room has perhaps doing something. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

We have a coomber twin CD recorder that is currently having problems finalising some CDs (Just in time for all the oral exams, Yay!!) When recording direct to CD sometimes it will work and can be played on anything, sometimes it will work but can only be played on some cd players, other times it will say it has worked but will still be blank and sometimes it will not even finalise. Also when copying from one drive to another it will do the same sort of thing. It will do it with any cd, not just a particular brand. Anyone come across this sort of thing before?

We are having a problem that is becoming more and more frequent. The interesting thing is that it only occours in one IT suite. Over the last few months both publisher and powerpoint have been having the delayed write failed problem when saving to the public or home drives, both located on the main server. This I belive after reading up on it is due to a loss of the network connection at some point while the user is logged on. Now that they have moved on to using access databases we now have a problem where a number of pupils databases have become corrupt. They are backed up daily so recovering them is not a problem, but is annoying and time consuming as I seem to have an extra 2 pupils with the problem each time. The error is "The Microsoft Jet Database Engine Stopped the Process Because You and Another User are Attempting to Change the Same Data at the Same Time". Which also seems like it may be caused by this loss of network connection. The interesting bit is that it only happens in this one room, which is identical to the other IT room next to it. Same PCs, same image, same software (with a few exceptions) XP Pro SP3, Office 2003 Pro, same updates, same patches, same VLAN, same switch, identical GPO policies the only difference being the name of the policy. Both rooms sit either side of the server room so they are equal distances in terms of cable run. So why is it happening and why only in this one room??? Help?? Please????

I have had some floppy blanking plates go missing, but as ours are mostly fujitsu machines there is then a metal blanking plate behind this, and then nothing behind that. You could perhaps try something similar to jamesreedersmith's idea? It may be possible to get a bit of plastic from your DT dept and then glue this to the metal chassis of the machine behind the front cover, you may need epoxy resin rather than super glue for this. Im not familiar with the construction of those Dells but it may be an idea untill you can get some blanking plates to be glued back to the front.

To access some menus on Sahara projectors you need to have it connected to a PC and project an image.

Pretty much the same as Duke I use the librarians spare barcode scanner, print a barcode onto a mini address label and put it on the back / bottom of the machine where fingers cant get to peel them off Then just enter it into an access database that i made myself, kind of a work in progress but so far it can search by barcode, serial, location and asset tag and records where it is, how old it is (warranty). Eventually i will sort it so that it will record any items that were lost / broken or disposed and maybe even the software on each machine.
