Looking for some Teacher laptops

Hi everyone,

 

I'm looking to get 30 Teacher laptops, Windows based, ideally 16gb RAM.

Something that will last us a while. Budget is about £600 per device.

 

What would you recommend?

Because that assumes three things:

 

1) The extra time spent fitting the RAM is worthless

2) You don't care about the warranty and support of the computer. Adding RAM might not void the warranty but if there are any RAM issues on them, you can absolutely guarantee that the vendor will tell you to go whistle.

3) That the computer doesn't have soldered RAM, which a lot do these days.

 

It's much easier to just buy them with what you need. Upgrade them further on down the line, sure, but not out of the box.

I don't think we've claimed on warranty for a student or staff laptop in the last 10 years, we stopped bothering with extended warranties because students vandalise the laptops and void them almost immediately anyway.

 

The only hardware failures we've been unable to fix ourselves are busted USB-C ports used for charging that are soldered to the motherboard, we just don't have the tools or time to learn; screens, keyboards, chassis, storage, memory, wifi and other chipset boards are all easy enough. Motherboard too but typically at that point we EOL the device and cannabalise it for parts.

 

We've started getting refurb Elitebooks instead of brand new recently as well, very good condition, typically been used in some corporate environment for 3-5 years and for 1/3 the cost of new we can push them to last 3 years easily. Only stickler is that we can get parts for them, specifically keyboards.

Last time I bought some  @VeryPC Thinbooks I specced 16GB RAM and they came in at well under £600. Had one with a duff drive that was dealt with very easily and quickly. The only problem so far has been from teachers who have spilt liquid on them 😠.

Of late we buy Dell Pro 16 (i5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD). Last paid £455 per laptop excl. VAT.

Stonebook Pro's (I think they still make them). They are easily upgradable, have good support, 3 years next day on-site warranty, and are around the £500 price mark.

Direct from Dell. We have a specific education account manager, so likely get the best pricing possible. And they have an ethernet socket.

Good point, we are buying 5 at a time, but still not huge volume. Dell seem to call them a "PC16250". I've just spotted that this is also with a 3 year onsite warranty.They've moved over to requiring a "Dell Premier" account for viewing quotes and ordering, but the quotes still have to be requested from the account manager. You'll see on an invoice if you order, but they have item codes for everything on the invoice. That particualr laptop has something like 40 item codes!

You might be able to get these for £525 with 5 year NBD warranty.

We bought a batch of refurb Dell Latitude 7420 2 in 1's recently - 380 each with a 3 year warranty and they're nice laptops. USB C charger as well as one thing I used to hate about Dell is their proprietary chargers!

We're buying Dells and on most laptops we're adding five years accidental damage cover for around £40/unit. Only one claim so far, but dealt with just as painlessly as their normal NBD onsite repairs. 

 

And we've just decided to standardise on 32GB RAM as were expecting to keep them for five years.

How about some HP Elitebooks?  We're processing some lovely 14" HP 840 G8 right now - 11th Gen i7, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe - £375 plus vat per unit.

Our last lot were Stone Probooks, great price, people love them so far and out of 70 there's only been one issue, sorted on site the day after.

an even better deal then! - Last price I got was around £460 for the laptop and then an additional £13 (for each laptop) to upgrade them to 16gb of RAM. Inflation though!

 

The extra cost now, is worth it for the upgraded warranty (compared to the 3 years). Their support really is great, I have submitted issues late PM before and they have managed to come on-site for early morning the next day.

I used to buy 15.6" but have recently gone with 14" as it was a lot cheaper.
