New ISP recommendations

We are an Adult Ed College based in SE London and currently on LGFL Option 2.

 

We are considering moving away from LGFL, as being Option 2 we only get a raw connection and mange our own firewall ourselves.

 

I have been looking at Spitfire, who can supply an uncontended 1Gb up, 1Gb down connection with a diversely routed resilient backup connection.

 

 

Does anyone have any other suggestions on who to approach for quotes, and any expriences with changing ISP?

We have a 1Gbps BTnet line, very reliable with one one real outage in the past 5 years. We pay £6,960.00 a year exvat. They do also offer diversely routed backups. but in our case it was way out of our price range.

Happy schools broadband customer here. 1gbps up / down

 

Pay £6400 P/A for the main line

Most of our schools are with @SchoolsBroadband - typically between £5k and £6k for 1gig up/down, and we’ve had no issues whatsoever with what’s in place.

 

Though I would have to caveat that with us placing an order with them for two of our schools almost exactly a month ago, and other than being told there’s a backlog after chasing, it’s been radio silence from them.

We are with Schools Broadband. The network performs well, but we have serious Safeguarding issues with their Netsweeper configuration and their apparent indifference to fixing them.

If you are in a community Fibre area you can get a 3Gbps connection from £49 a month. We've not used them in schools but have connections into other buildings and it works well.

Do wonder why it costs £500+ per month for fibre still , couldn't find anything about contention on normal FTTP connections or even if its still a problem compared to the overall contention once you reach the cloud services.

Before we went with schools broadband, we had a quote from Talk Talk which came to just over £800 p/m, for the same speeds we are getting currently with SB

Several factors here, contention, SLA, service metrics, geography.

 

The increasing number of alt-net providers are driving prices down in some areas, but the fact remains that if you're rural/semi-rural/town and only served by openreach, you'll pay more than if you're in Hammersmith. Our 1Gbps symmetrical ("leased line") with 6 hour fix can be between £2000-£6000, with I guess the average somewhere in the middle, depending on where you are.

 

You're (probably) not getting ripped off, the market is the market.

I think they moved away from Smoothwall to NetSweeper. Though probably still have customers on Smoothwall, which may be why they list both. I did ask them about hosted filtering in my last renewal, as i considered it, and they were pushing NetSweeper then.

 

I'm internet connection only though using on-prem sophos boxes.

Been happy with Zen but renewed with Amvia, also using Amvia with some other customers. Love the fact you can pick up the phone and it's answered by an engineer.
