Been watching Westworld of late, though this is true of any Western, where it always looks scorching and the desert is never far away:

 

Ladies, unless they work in the saloon, dress in a long dress or skirt/blouse combo (and presumably basic undergarments and maybe a corset for the richer ones). Maybe a little warm, but bearable (I assume, never having worn such an outfit).

 

Men, apart from the richer ones who favour what looks like lighter weight materials, have a thick long johns, thick shirt, thick waistcoat, thick jacket, thick/leather trousers and possibly a duster coat. How do they not collapse in the heat?

Quick historical note. More than a few women who were among the early settlers in North America left their settlements and moved in with the native Americans. They were much more easy going and the women didn't have to wear thick uncomfortable European clothing!

In this very warm weather, 5Foot2 has started mixing down orange, or blackcurrant, or whatever squash we have and putting it in the fridge. It's a simple idea but, I must admit, it hadn't occurred to me.

I have to admit that trying to stay hydrated is a problem atm. With it being so hot your sweat evaporates quickly so you don't realise just how much fluid you are losing, and the only indicator you get is your wee colour.

Even so I've been tanking back water like there's no tomorrow but still can't seem to play catch-up!

I sweat at the best of times, not wearing a Jiu-Jitsu Gi is only allowed in extreme heat and then it only happened last year cause the Air con broke. Running having to deal with sweat in the eyes, etc.

Invigilating an exam today (voluntarily - luckily I don't need to do it often!) and we had to use the meeting room which is very warm and stuffy, due to the flat roof and south facing windows.

 

Yesterday, I had the idea to go out and fix our portable air con unit which was missing all of the external pipework fittings and adapters after being borrowed. Screwfix + a piece of ply for the sliding window, and we had working but noisy aircon for the exam (I checked with the candidates whether they were happy with the noise, which was steady so not actually too bad).

 

Feel very sorry for the kids doing an exam this afternoon in our gym, which is a hotbox.

It was from about 3pm onwards here. Some quite heavy downpours, but we've not really had any rain for over three weeks, so this is very welcome.

Most localised flooding will be from rain runoff on the hard ground as very dry soil will not absorb water very easily.

Massive thunderstorm here at about 3 Sunday morning which made a load of our UPSs complain, but everything seem to be working okay. And it has brought in some cooler weather for now, although forecasts show it back up to about 30 by Friday.

A storm may have been nearby, or upwind of your location. The ionized smell may have been ozone created after lightning strikes.

Looks like we have swapped weather then! We are forecast a week of showers and a max on 23. This will be a lot more pleasant than last week.

Was at my parents yesterday and they showed me their greenhouse thermometer had recorded a high of over 50 degrees last week, with the door open.

We had rain yesterday, the temperature dropped significantly and was much more comfortable overnight. Coming into work this morning was lovely - Windows open, no AC, nice breeze. It's sunny again now but it's only forecast to reach the mid-20s in temperature this week, which is much more my kind of weather!

I was very disappointed.... We got about a centimetre of rain late evening/overnight (if that)!

 

I'd moved the patio chairs into the shed, made sure all buckets were out and gutters clear for the water butts (those I could reach on conservatory and shed) to make the most of the promised deluge.... and... pretty much nothing...

 

Got to feel sorry for those I saw on the news in Hunstanton, Norfolk, but wish (careful what you wish for) we had at least a little of that!

 

The conifers are looking a little sad already and the water butts have been empty for nearly 2 weeks . We collect shower water and washing up water, but we use a lot because the dogs wee on the 'astro-turf' in the back garden during the day (been to hot to walk them, only early/late) and we have to follow them with a watering can or the stench soon gets overpowering in the heat... but I begrudge using clean tap water for it.

 

Then I overhear one of the teachers a couple of weeks ago saying they 'must make sure to refill their 'jacuzzi' soon to get ready for the summer'... I wonder if those sorts of things ever get banned along with hosepipes?

 

Anyway, yes a little cooler here today (Bedfordshire) and the hounds appreciate that!

Well, in the space of half an hour this morning I got 3 buckets and half a large planter full of rainwater, just from the modest sized conservatory roof!

 

I guess my naked rain dance around the garden at 1 a.m. this morning worked, sorry (not sorry)!!!
