Razors - as in shaving

Hello all

 

I have a problem and I thought I would ask some sensible and helpful people

 

but they were unavailable so I thought I'd ask you lot

 

Anyway - I always have 2 razor for shaving - have had for many years because I used to live between 2 houses - for reasons

 

anyway - I have carried this on because it is handy to have one in the shower in the en-suit and one in the bathroom

 

BUT

I use Gillette Fusion just because a free one landed on my doormat some years ago when I needed one

 

but after a while the release mechanism for the blades gets jammed up and stops working - which has now happened to one on mine

 

so - I need to get a full new razor and not just replace the blade every 6 months (for some reason I don;t wear them out very often)

 

BUT - in TESCO (other supermarkets are available) they only seem to have Gillette - which makes me feel rather forced to go the way they want me to go

 

 

so I started thinking

 

WHY??

 

so what type should I go for

 

maybe the old 'safety razor' than my Dad used to use - are they really inferior to the 5 million blade modern version?

view advising a cut-throat razor will be ignored as my hand sometime wobbles (always has - my soldering is rather variable!) so that's just out

What is this "shaving" of which you speak? Think of the savings in money and time you could accrue by being a real man and growing a beard!

I use double edge "Safety razor", once you get used to it it's fine and can give a better shave. The cost of the blades are also cheaper compared to the disposable blades such as Gillette.

A bit of lateral thinking: Save time by not shaving. Get a suitable electric so that when/if it reaches a desirable length you can just give it a tidy up once a week. OR get a "stubble shaver" for that rugged/manly/devilish look and then you don't have to worry when two hours later you fund a bit you missed.

I use a double edge Saftey Razor too, the blades are really cheap and all metal. I keep the old blades in a metal money box and recycle all in one metal bin so there is little to no "bad" waste.

 

Always use a shaving foam rather than a gel that clogs up easily.

I have a Harry's subscription but i'm not overly impressed. Also i doubt more than 2 blades is any better, they seem to get clogged up with bristles easier. If I was to start over i'd love to try a cut throat if not then a good old safety razor.

originally it was a little bit ginger as well as the normal fair colour

 

Kept it for a year or so - then a bit on my chin decided that grey was a better colour

at which point it shaved it off

 

for good!!!

I'm an occasional shaver. Go through phases of staying clean shaven and others of letting it grow out.

Swapped to a safety shaver a good while ago, bought a back of 100 razors for a tenner and still got most of them, and a stick of shaving foam for a quid. I also keep an electric trimmer for when I'm feeling lazy.

Never looked back.

I use a safety razor when I am clean shaven which is about 20% of the time I decide a need a change and then get annoyed about having to shave and I find it shaves as well as any cartridge razor and if it gets clogged with hair you can just take the blade out and rinse it.

Don't use foam/gel or soap as I find it gives me a rash and i'm prone to nicks when using.

2 razors, 3 sheds, en-suite and bathroom - such opulence! Every thought of hiring a home-help for regularly shavings .

Actually, try a razor marketed to ladies. Not sure why, but some seem to work better (less cuts) than the traditional 'mens' brands. A PhD friend of mine used to work for one of the big razor blade manufactures, and research showed 'softening' the hair/bristles was key. So for me, shaving when showering works well, letting the shampoo sit a short while before starting the scrape!

I had a Harry's subscription and really enjoyed using their products as they lasted quite a bit. However I've recently stopped all subs to un-necessary items (Oddballs pants for example!). Once I have finished using my Harry's stuff I will go back to purchasing something cheaper.

I just use a (rechargeable) battery shaver now. A few minutes every morning and job done. No cuts, no fuss.

Not much help to the OP, but I haven't been clean shaven since I was about 20 years old (and that's a long time ago)...

 

In a previous employment I was required to shave every day and wear a shirt and tie. I also had to cut off my long hair (something I've regretted ever since and never managed to get past the in-between scruffy stage to grow it back). This was back in the day where to look 'smart' required you to have short hair and be clean shaven...

 

The shaving rash around my collar was so irritating and I eventually found electric seemed to suit me a bit better (still not great though), but since I left there I've rebelled and it has been some combination of either stubble or short beard depending on whether I can be bothered or not and I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've actually ever needed to fully shave since.
