I’m thinking of biting the bullet and upgrading to windows 11 only on my admin machines, I would never put it into development just yet as it’s only coming out on the 5th Of October but wanted to know if anyone else is biting the bullet?
Guest ZFarnworth Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Well I might put it off at work then and test at home, I think I’m far too exited for windows 11 when I know at work I’ll find a few snags that probs can’t be fixed. I’m gonna put it off and test at home.
paulkerton Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Get a test machine ready, but I wouldn't push to move into any form of production - even Admin machines just yet. Though to be honest, the whole thing feels more like it's a reskin and rebrand of Windows 10 than the jumps between XP > Vista > 7 > 10.
3s-gtech Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 My usual lag is 12 months after release before I even put it on a test machine, and two years before it’s rolled out. Much of that is apathy nowadays - I’m not excited to get into testing(!), but I’m mainly after stability on an older supported build. Not that my work machine will run 11 [emoji28]
supportman Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 (edited) Yeh I will leave it a year first, always needs updates and service packs to make it usable at first. Tech1 Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I would mimic what others have said as well and wait a while before rolling it out into your environment. I'm sure I am not the only person in the position but we have around 450 workstations here and none of them are compatible with Windows 11.

Oaktech Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I have 1 person using it in production on an unsupported system - a 4th gen i5 - she was a software QA tester in a previous life and is verrrrry useful. TBF however, it's not been a problem, everything has just worked so far. A couple of minor adjustements to GPOs and a forced install of the graphics driver. That 1 person is unlikely to change any time soon.

Don't get me wrong, we've still got Win10 rigs in the wings just in case. We've also got a single early adopter teacher running it in the wild. Savvy, knows what they are on with and doesn't whinge when things behave a little funky. Equally, not one hitch, so far. It's running identical GPO to the Win10 machines. Machine and User GPOs all applying nicely. And no major security loopholes (that we have yet found). There is a weekly major update, but it is playing nicely. Obviously, not ready for mainstream yet, but it is good to get a head start on this.
LeMarchand Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I might try it when it's released on "my" machines, but they are currently saying "Come back when you have a more expensive device". Don't think anything we have "in stock" will officially run it, and I'm in a similar situation at home. Basically, I'd try it if I could but as MS have raised the entry bar too high it will have to wait until new kit is bought.

bitznpcz Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Nope. Don't think I have many machines that will run it.l! Derbyshire Schools running SAP are still reliant on IE11 as well as Orderpoint does not work with Chrome or Edge!

Installed it on my old Thinkpad T430 - 3rd Gen Dual Core i5, 16gb DDR3, 256GB SSD, TPM 1.2 - and it went swimmingly. There was a slight hitch on my first try where it told me the device didn't meet the requirements. I realised Secure Boot wasn't enabled. After turning that on it off without a hitch. The only thing I've had to do is dig out a windows 10 driver for the trackpad. So far, so good. 2

No need for a MS account. If you tell it you don't have internet during the setup process is allows you to skip the MS account step. I was also able to activate windows by telling it I had no product key during setup, then going to Activation Settings and choosing to change product key. Entering the W7Pro key from the back of my laptop activated W11Pro immediately 4

That only applies to the Pro version now apparently. Trying that with the Home version doesn’t let you proceed until you connect it to the internet.
