It's almost like Windows 10 but with a skin...

 

I'm sure MS said they were going to just keep updating Windows 10 and not going to release a new OS? Oh well.

 

As for Windows 11, I won't be changing to it anytime soon. I wonder when schools, etc will start implementing Windows 11 if ever. It might be like Windows 8 / 8.1 where most places just missed that out entirely!

Because, while I concede that’s it’s very very similar, it’s not the same. Ignoring what they’ve changed in the background, which apparently is a fair amount, and ignoring the increased hardware requirements, the UI is different enough to cause disruption if you just drop it on your user base unannounced.

 

While I have no doubt that that W11 uptake will happen (and probably relatively quickly as well) pushing it out to all and sundry as soon as it’s available is asking for trouble.

People are used to things changing all the time now, they have phones, websites change every week, they'll barely notice.

You can’t make that assumption. I’ve seen people have panic attacks when an icon is removed from their desktop or when a shortcut stops working. Forcing a UI change on someone unannounced or with short notice is, to quote an old colleague of mine, doing something to your users, not for them.

 

And, point of interest, Windows 11 is going to a yearly release cadence, not every six months.

I agree. Some people struggle with change. If things change, users often worry they will "break" something or can't find what they are looking for entirely... and then it all falls on our shoulders!

Seems like Intel may have leaked the release month in their latest drivers:

 

Windows 11-64 – October 2021 Update – version 21H2

 

Guessing if that's the case it'll be a joint Win10/11 21H2 release

It's a shame we'll have to wait until 2022 for the free upgrade from W10 however.

Windows 11 is due out later in 2021 and will be delivered over several months. The rollout of the upgrade to Windows 10 devices already in use today will begin in 2022 through the first half of that year.

I've got it working on a couple of admin machines, and 1 teaching machine. Couple of tweaks to GPO to allow recently used apps to populate the start menu which we removed from Windows 8.1/10 and a reg tweak to remove 'windows terminal' from the right click start menu.

I've just kicked off an in-place upgrade of an Education version. Here's hoping it doesn't revert to Home!

Just upgraded my home PC from 10 Pro to 11 Pro - did not take long and it all seems to work fine. Downloaded the ISO direct from MS and fired up a VM on Virtual box and the ISO has all the flavours including 11 Edu which I installed. Enrolled with GCPW and all the policies seemed to work fine except for software deployment, just sits on downloading package, not sure why yet - will speak to Google about it at some point.

First impressions:

 

• Not keen on the new icons (though I guess I will get used to them or change them)
  
• Definitely don't like the Apple-aping central launcher
  
• As I just did a clean install from a key I needed to manually domain join, which wasn't easy to find, and when I found where it was the nice new skin dropped away to reveal the decades old "System Properties" box

My in-place upgrade worked, I seem to have Win 11 Education, no prompts yet to activate. Can't say I'm all that impressed, change for change's sake, but that is sadly the way of most software. More confusion for users. The biggest issue for us though is the hardware requirement, tens of thousands of pounds of hardware upgrades required earlier than expected.

None of our desktops can run Win 11, but we would have to start replacing anyway in the next few years. Suffice to say it's focused attention on that!

• Device Manager still is "old school"
  
• Positive: Win+X,F opens Apps and Features again, rather than having to use Win+X,T,Enter - though IIRC W10 used to be that first combo before changing to the second
  
• Systray doesn't seem to have an easy icon customisation process (s others have noted) but can be customised to a degree by drag and drop (thank goodness!)

You'll only get away with using the 2019 LTSC tho (Eg 1809) as the next Windows 10 LTSC is only supported until 2025. I suspect they're keeping the 2019 release around simply because it matches Server 2019 (Which is based on 1809)

 

If you're using the Office 365 client or Onedrive client, it's already not supported on the LTSC (Except for Server in RDS situations)

 

It'll work to get more life out of your machines but it's not a long term solution.

Me too, I'll retire in 2024 so migrating the last of the W10 machines will be someone else's problem!

Does Office refuse to work on the 2019 build, or just not supported? Not that even the latter is ideal.
