kennysarmy Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 lol, optimistic Depends what the DFE do - They'll need to actively lock students out of devices to force some of them to return them. Why? We will just invoice them for the equivalent laptop cost if it's not returned. We do know where they live

pete Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 4G MiFi monthly limit has been bumped to 8GB according to the email from DfE Dear colleague, As you know, the Department for Education (DfE) is providing laptops, tablets and 4G wireless routers to help children and young people stay in touch with social care services and provide access to remote education during the COVID-19 pandemic. This email tells you about an increase in the data allowance for the 4G wireless router offer, and how to get support. Data allowance The DfE has raised the data allowance to 8GB per user per month effective immediately and we will continue to review the data allowance. Users who receive their router part way through a month will receive a pro-rata data allowance for that month. At the start of the next month the data allowance resets, and users will receive a full 8GB for the new month. The data allowance will start the day after you receive it, and will remain active for 6 months.

Meldrew Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Has anyone else still not received an invitation to order, now a month after the emails were supposed to be sent out? Meldrew 1

Andycat Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Was wondering if it was just us... I got mine yesterday!
Jonah Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Has anyone else still not received an invitation to order, now a month after the emails were supposed to be sent out? Meldrew Still haven’t got ours. For those who have - what address does it come from? Want to check we’ve definitely not missed anything!
Tones Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 (edited) You might be able to skip the waiting for the initial e-mail. If you're the main contact on the ordering forms you probably already have an account. Just go to the official ordering page: https://techsource.computacenter.com/en/login and use the forgotten user id and enter your e-mail address and you'll know if you've been registered. If you get an e-mail back use the forgotten password and then you can login and start your order. Edit: Forgot to say the welcome e-mail is officially from [email protected] Edited June 18, 2020 by Tones 1

MYK-IT Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Finally managed to order our allocation of laptops a couple of days ago. Received email confirmation yesterday, regarding order confirmation and dispatch. And just received an an email from Royal Mail, that a parcel from Livewire Telecom Ltd is on its way (presumably the 4G dongles). With all the various / numerous discussions posted on here in relation to how they are configured? How do we obtain admin / bios passwords? Concern about if additional software is installed, will the InTune Management remove it etc.? it's certainly (unnecessary) additional work and testing that none of use need. And just to add to the mix, I was advised that more laptops were collected from our LEA yesterday. No prior knowledge, or instructions supplied except "they may need some configuration", as advised by the person handing them out! So, until I get my hands on them, I can only assume that these will be 'technically' the same laptops / configuration / scheme as the others I ordered(?) with the exception that they have been supplied via the LEA. Meaning I will probably have the task now of attempting to find the right contacts to request passwords etc. or more importantly ascertain who actually owns them!
msi_school Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Just ordered our, I have had two interesting thoughts If they know we are eligible for a certain number of laptops and will not process an order for more, why do we have to order them can they just ship them? I have looked at the HP website for the laptop and you can not specify the 250 G7 with a Celeron processor.

Because you might have already provided the students they think are eligible from your own supplies?
Primus Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Worked in my old school. So you took parents to court and then enforced the debt using debt collectors?
Ditto Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Hopefully the threat of legal action was enough to get the result needed.
enjay Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Because you might have already provided the students they think are eligible from your own supplies? We have, but I'll take a free laptop anyway thanks. Also, some of the laptops we've provided for home learning will need to come back when school resumes, but the Government ones here can be kept by the child for the rest of Year 11.
enjay Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Send around debt collectors. It’s been know to happen. When I was at an independent school, we did sometimes get debt recovery companies involved for non-payment of school fees, but the companies' fees are so high you wouldn't do it for a laptop. Also, a previous Headteacher told me education should be free and you therefore can't charge students/families for things they've used or damage they've caused even when caught on CCTV, all you can do is invite them to contribute.
Primus Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Hopefully the threat of legal action was enough to get the result needed. It isn't in my experience.
Tones Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 I think you guys are getting off track here. Can we keep it about procuring and the technical aspect rather than ifs and buts of a problem we won't have for awhile that isn't really our issue or our headache. 4

LeMarchand Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 On TES news this afternoon.... https://www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-frustration-dfe-free-laptops-arrive-locked Taking a Windows one home for the w/e to test prior to handout, but I don't see that the devices being locked should be a problem. It's not as if we ask "non-disadvantaged" kids to bring in their home kit so that we can install software for them. All the work we're setting is web-based, so as long as it gets on t'internet and they can access O365, I'm leaving 'em well alone - especially as I don't have the skills, time (and probably money!) to replicate their filtering offer. 1
mavhc Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 I have looked at the HP website for the laptop and you can not specify the 250 G7 with a Celeron processor. HP have many configurations of laptops that aren't on their website that they sell via other channels
DrCheese Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 LEA is taking full responsibility for ours, which I'm ok with as it means they're dealing with the support side of things - What happens after October tho is anyone's guess at this point.
