DrBeaker Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) Today when asking the Head, I was told to work from home and if there were any problems onsite with the servers etc we'd arrange it/sort it out. All I'd do is call our MSP to sort it anyway if it's something of theirs. Power failure - what can we do? Everything will be off anyway in a prolonged outage. I'm not IT manager but IT Technician (just doing role of IT manager but not paid those wages) Edited March 23, 2020 by DrBeaker

I was in on day one, and had volunteered to cover the rest of the days, to spare my team the worry! But the head then came to see me and said that actually we should just work from home. So now we're all working from home! I'm a keyholder and have been told to just make myself available as needed, on-site. (With my own discretion)

Jamman960 Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 I went in today to ensure our staff were ready to work from home but am now going to stay at home going forward, the plan is for our technician to stay on site for now covering those staff who are going to continue going in and our key worker pupils. I live 20 miles away while our tech is about 6 miles from the school. James
mrbios Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 I'm in Monday/Wednesday/Friday's tech is in Tuesday/Thursdays Other tech is off isolating as he has COPD. We had 10 students (out of 1007) in today, had to sort out some laptops and tablets. Apart from that i don't think anything else i did today i couldn't do from home, hoping to see how it is Wednesday afternoon, if i've not done anything requiring me to be in i'll see if they'll let us stay home. 1
mikeprice Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 In the old days (yup - another story from ancient times) I was working on some systems that we could normally access remotely via a 2400 baud modem - which taught you to think before typing - and the ancient art of patience but at times the system might lock and even our (rather dodgy) remote console access would not get the thing running again and one site was in Sunderland was a bit of a drive from Liverpool However the site had security staff on site - so there was a folder in the computer room manager's office with a diagram of the computers (server type things - up to 2000 users on each one) showing how to open it and with a big arrow showing the on/off switch and the restart button - then we could ring security and they could go round and restrt the system (i.e press one button) without us coming on site If you can sort out something like that then you could stay at home - remote in via whatever system - and if it all goes badly wrong then site staff would have a diagram showing an accurate picture so they can easily follow instruction to restart the main server just an idea - might help you stay off site 1

We still have a few students in. I would suspect we’ll shutdown by tonight with just me or site manager coming in if there is an major issue
caffrey Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 We're on a rota doing admin duties - seems a bit silly to me but I don't mind doing my part. I'd rather be in anyway, next time i'm in is on the 31st March All geared up to do as much support as I can from home

Once that is done will be leaving and not coming in unless there is a button to press, everything else can be done remotely. I am a keyholder so if I have to come on site, will do it out of hours, although I suspect our site will not remain open beyond this week, very few kids in today and numbers likley to tail off
Disease Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 I am in on a rota with my Tech, 2 days on 2 days off on a rolling basis. The risk is minimal as there are no more than 15 staff on site so everyone is pretty isolated.

I'm currently working from home as there's nothing I desperately need to be on site for. I am "on call" should there be something that I have to be on site to sort but otherwise I'm doing what I can from home. Be a good few days before that dwindles to "checking emails", though!

That seems to be how it should be Once things are sorted out (which they should be by now in most cases) then you should be able to work without going in - in which case you MUST do so - as instructed by the PM but clearly you may sometimes need to be in if something weird happens
kennysarmy Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Both myself (NM) and technician will be monitoring emails from home and addressing whatever we can. Anything that requires us to go physically in to school will be with agreement with the Head. Today they had 13 students out of 1350!

Scotbynature Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Our school closed as of last night so working from home answering emails and doing what I can remotely, apart from that working on updating paperwork and documentation while entertaining my almost three and almost 8 year old. Already done the Joe wicks workout, planted some plants and had a morning reading session. They are now having play time in garden while I try to do some work (well browse edugeek) and then its time for maths, haha. Working longer hours during the lockdown than I ever did before. Government should be paying me overtime for all of this.
localzuk Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Of our team of 3, 2 of us are working from home (I'm in various vulnerable groups, so have been for a week), 1 is onsite covering the 4 schools that are open with physical requests (which seem to have died off day 2). I've emailed our management to find out if that 1 onsite is actually needed every day going forward or if we can just move to an on call system, maybe with a dedicated day each week.

Well done for keeping them working and learning From what I have seen on the WWW a lot of people are finding to 'too difficult' which it will be if you didn't start as you mean to go on!! There was someone on the telly yesterday who had asked the kids how to make it like school so now they have to do a register every morning - for their 2 kids - but they do it Whatever it takes!!!
