It's obvious we have a problem in this country that has resulted lower vaccine uptake in black, asian and minority ethnic people. The reasons for this are likely varied and not quickly fixed.

 

It seems to me, with absolutely no PR training, that making a video such as this with two, rich, white men will not really help to convince people from these backgrounds to get the vaccine. Just a thought.

Makes sense. The hoax flying around was that it had something piggy in it, which (allegedly - I'm not a religious buff!) would make it a no-go for the Jewish and Islamic faiths.

In fairness the nasally administered flu vaccines that we organised for the infant age kids every year have always had pig products in them.

 

Several Islamic faith leaders have made statements that people should get vaccinated against Covid even if the product contained porcine products - I can find the ones for UAE and Egypt. I thought I heard something similar from India earlier this week, but can't find it now.

PARIS -- A 116-year-old French nun who is believed to be the world’s second-oldest person has survived COVID-19 and is looking forward to celebrating her 117th birthday on Thursday.

 

The Gerontology Research Group, which validates details of people thought to be 110 or older, lists Frenchwoman Lucile Randon — Sister André's birth name - as the second-oldest known living person in the world.

 

French media report that Sister André tested positive for the virus in mid-January in the southern French city of Toulon. But just three weeks later, the nun is considered recovered.

 

“I didn’t even realize I had it,” she told French newspaper Var-Matin.

 

Sister André, who is blind and uses a wheelchair, did not even worry when she received her diagnosis.

 

“She didn’t ask me about her health, but about her habits,” David Tavella, the communications manager for the care home where the nun, told the newspaper. “For example, she wanted to know if meal or bedtime schedules would change. She showed no fear of the disease. On the other hand, she was very concerned about the other residents.”

 

Not all of the home's residents shared Sister André’s luck. In January, 81 of the 88 residents tested positive for the virus, and about 10 of them died, according to Var-Matin.

 

Once doctors declared the nun no longer infected, she was allowed to attend Mass.

we thought that maybe the inhalers we use might actually provide some sort of help

 

but it seems to have some actual medical backing now

Thanks for posting this - very interesting. Having gone years without needing anything, I've started to use blue inhaler a bit more about a year ago and have just been asked to try the brown for a month to see impact - only my second time in 50+ years! I'm very minimally impacted by asthma and normally not at all until fungal spores season late Summer early Autumn. It wasn't until I visited a NZ GP who knew of a client with the same history as me that suddenly had a serious episode that I was medically marker up on the system as having Asthma. I hope the promise in the article proves to be correct. Current government messaging, such as around holidays is making me feel there is an underlying concern that Joe Public is not being made aware of yet. I hope I'm wrong, but I wonder if variants and vaccine efficacy are causing concern. Hopefully they are just being ultra-cautious or are concerned about spread in the groups outside the priority groups over Summer - not sure but any promising news on treatments is always welcome.

There are two rules that need to be applied rigorously to lateral flow tests.

 

If the test result comes back positive, always assume it's right - even if you don't have any symptoms.

 

More importantly:

 

If the test result comes back negative, always assume it's wrong!

Current odds for the world are 1 in 2450, assuming no one else gets it, and 3% death rate stays constant.

 

However UK has a 5.6% death rate, and much higher infection rate than the world, so we have a 1 in 196 chance of dying, assuming no one else gets it, and the 5.6% death rate stays constant

Very interesting - not sure if my preventer has budesonide in it though. Cheering to know that us asthmatics may not be at as much risk as we thought

Another stat. We are third per capita in terms of vaccine rate.

Canada is interesting. They have bought on a massive scale, but are at a relatively low level. I wonder if that's related to size and distribution of their citizens. The did only start mid January mind, so will be interesting to watch progress.
