I must admit, its going to be curious to see yet another blip on the graph when the schools are open, and the rates rise, then they close for a week or two and they start stablising being excused as "reflecting not driving community transmission" yet again.

As the virus takes a few weeks to take hold, and another few weeks to pass through people's systems, it seems really coincidental that we're set up for three weeks allowing it to take hold and two weeks to pass through people's systems, doesn't it?

Far from convinced about mass (predictive text suggested mad!) opening of schools, but even less keen on point 89 in the plan referring to universities:

Seems to include science, performing arts, anything where you need a lab or a studio, so tens of thousands of students moving around the country and then returning to their family homes three weeks later.

It's up to schools if they want a phased return if they can't test all students in one day.

The only way we could test all 1200 students, it would be to stop the lessons for whole day and just do testing, involving lots of staff in this - I think even with that it would be near impossible

I have been told how testing there will be organised.

 

Given the circumstances, I prefer to be at home for now.

It does, but it's deliberate. They want to see what three weeks of full contact does to the R rate before the Easter break kicks in.

It would be good if there was a version of the LFT suitable for batch testing. Samples from an entire class/group tested together in one go: if it's negative, all good, time and materials saved, but if it tests positive, proceed to individual tests for everyone in that group.

 

IIRC that's the basis of how the PCR tests are done at scale by the labs (although I think with that, samples are cleverly combined into multiple groups such that no retesting is needed in order to identify positive individuals).

Someone just scraped a positive here with the LFT test

 

Knock on effects were the womens toilets \ staffroom and a classroom was out of bounds till a deep clean was done - This is the problem that could happen, contact tracing will be a nightmare

So we have to test EVERY student from the 8th March BEFORE face to face teaching can take place.

 

That's 1400 students!

It's about 5 mins work to test someone, plus a 30 min delay for the results

 

You can parallelise it to 1 person per minute per queue though, with 5 people.

 

Assuming you want to do 1400 people in a morning, let's say 4 hours, that's 350 people per hour, so you'd need 6 queues of 5 staff per queue, and then have 30 people per queue waiting for results.

 

You'd request that people arrived in stages, not everyone at 9am.

 

Easier to do 1 year group per day though. Y11 come in on mon, Y10 tue.

Ours has been set up in the Sports hall, which should be big enough for something like that (and it's not forecast to rain here next week:D).

 

I've been offered testing this week and next, but after that apparently we'll be expected to home test like this students.

It's a school for 1400 people, I assume it's large. 6 areas of the school. Schools have long corridors.
